Matt Booty commenting about cadence is hilarious. He said the same thing last year. Honestly their cadence has been bad since 2021. They dropped fh5 and halo infinite too close together in 2021. While having nothing ready in 2022. 2023 they had hifi early (good), but redfall in may killed momentum. And starfield and forza m again released too close together. Only to leave a large gap until pretty much end of 2024. Only hellblade 2 came out in May. Next titles are sept or later. Cadence just hasn’t been good and games are still coming out unfinished.

Wukong is absolutely a case like BG3 where the timed exclusivity is a result of the Series S holding devs back. If there was a marketing deal then Sony would be slapping their logos all over the trailers and we wouldnt even know it was coming to xbox later.

@@robf BG3 wasn't even the only dev to speak out on it either. The Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 devs also stated they had to lower the scope of the sequel due to the Series S limitations. I think we're gonna see this happen more and more as devs start making truly next-gen games and if Microsoft continues forcing Series S and Series X feature parity.

Problem here is GP isn’t growing fast enough. If it was there would be no issue. But if GP doesn’t grow while you throw more content in and at the same time individual sales keep shrinking, the math just doesn’t add up anymore. Xbox GP makes essentially the same amount of revenue as ps plus. But GP is killing individual game sales. This is not a one off either. Only Xbox exclusive to actually sell decent this gen (and chart top 20 year end NPD) is starfield. Forza Motorsport, hellblade 2, hifi rush, Redfall, even halo infinite have been big commercial flops if you compare the sales generated from those titles alone.

I know you’re all not going to read this but Cog has a giant misunderstanding on what’s going on with Forza. First of all Forza doesn’t necessarily have “the biggest artists” it’s not like GTA or even Crazy Taxi. The thing Cog failed to realize in his own explanation which would’ve realized makes no sense….. if it’s a music issue they can patch out the song. That’s literally what GTA did with games like IV and V to some extent. And crazy taxi all games you used as examples Cog if you think the music industry is ruthless, you have no idea about the car industry. Those are the rights that are expiring licensing to use cars…. The basis for the entire game. Super cars and hyper cars come with a huge price tag, ontop of meeting conditions to even entertain the option of using the license. Toyota for instance won’t license to your game if your game involves street racing. Most hyper cars won’t license if you can fully mod their car. There’s a lot of hoops you gotta jump through to get these license, and Microsoft seems to only want to pay for 4 years ontop of that. You can’t really have your cool racing game if you lose the license to all the fun cars.

It's not a music licensing problem, it's a car licensing problem. Since they use all real cars, and the makers of those cars own the copyright of the cars. Car games have to pay for those licensing deals, and have to follow specific obligations to use those cars. Like I believe to use Toyota cars, a game cannot allow illegal street racing.

Well, then I guess someone at Toyota messed up and missed the illegal street racing in a few Need for Speed games, as well as Forza Horizon 4, which I was happy to recently discover has illegal street racing. Toyota cars are in these games, among many other brands. Frankly, it would be an odd financial decision to NOT want a videogame to advertise your car brand by making it look awesome doing sensationalized things like street racing. In regard to best open worlds I think of Death Stranding and more recently Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. For DS, the world actually felt like a character in the story. The beautiful barrenness of it with other player mechanisms left for you to use all around was so amazing. For Rebirth, it was just so surreal seeing the og FF7 map recreated in such a beautiful fashion. Exploring it is such a fun time and I get side tracked from the main story plenty of times just wandering around.

I think stellar Blade has one of the best worlds visually and functionally. Every area has meaning to the story and the platforming/puzzling and vistas are phenomenal. Dragon Age Inquisition also really stands out to me. Memorable places and plenty of leg room to exhaust curiosity.

Xbox's problem is the pump and dump, or shotgun blast approach Forza Motorsport released 2 months after Starfield which would've been better to release a month or later to fix some issues, Then Motorsport beginning of this year which would be a few months before Hellblade 2 We have the exact same games release but spread out a bit more Remember 2022 that had Grounded and Pentiment, if xbox delayed Halo Infinite 2-3 months into the start of 2022 instead of 1 month after Forza Horizon 5, guess what seems good again doesnt Same for the end of this year, CoD, Indiana Jones, Avowed, Age of Mythology, Flight Sim 2024, third party exclusive like Stalker 2 and the Starfield Expansion which for BGS previous expansions are full on game length. There is a reason why Xbox or Microsoft can’t come out and say those words about the studio closures it’s because of future studio purchases. If you come out until the open air about why your studio closed and how you plan to handle it you’ve given a future purchase and it could dissuade them from, going ahead with the deal. It might force them to charge you more to purchase their studio or it could even require that you put certain language in a contract that you would not have had to put in that contract. Had you kept your mouth shut. This is a business, this is not meeting with your friends in the basement to have fun. This is a business and it must be run like a business or you’ll look up one day and you won’t have a business.

I think Gene is misremembering regarding Oblivion (not Skyrim) and Demon Souls. We have plenty of early development based interviews on the topic with Miyazaki himself, Kings Field and Wizardry were the inspirations, nothing to do with Oblivion, an interview back in the day had interviewer write in "it's like Elder Scrolls" but it was not from Fromsoft or Miyazaki himself.

There's no way they're going to make everything exclusive forever anymore, maybe 3-5 years at best, but on the other hand, it makes no sense to put all their games on PS5/Switch 2 day one. There's just no logical reason to do so and commit to that time frame, when for the most part, it's wayyyyy better for them to pick and choose a date for when to release a game on other platforms, when you're not beholden to a day one release and possibly set it up against another big game/Sony or Nintendo 1st party exclusives. Besides you release Starfield on PS, 3 years after release, with 2 expansions and a third one on the way, dropping the same day as the PS release, how many sales are they really going to lose on that one? If people really want it, they'll buy it whenever it comes.

Matty that was not a miscommunication you had Phil Spencer saying hey we have more games that are going to be going to other platforms that is fine and acceptable to say on a separate note. You have another company executive saying to you just so we’re clear don’t think going to another platform. You will have many games that will be exclusive. It is a two-part statement designed to let you know a few things one don’t get it in your head that everything will be exclusive and don’t think we’re abandoning. The concept of exclusives a company can do both. PlayStation is the perfect example. Look at how often game is released on their main platform of choice and then sometime later that same game is released on PC now we are not we know it is possible to release that game on his initial launch date on PC and the Sony platform of choice. Sony intentionally chooses not to. Convenient way to get a double bite at the apple. Because some of the games win released, you just have to play right then right there cough up your $70 and then if you’re a PC nerd some of my coworkers want the ultimate edition on your PC for the best of the best when it comes to graphics. So you knowlimited quantity of people cough up in additional $70 not a lot but it’s enough for them to justify this sales strategy. I will even imagine that they probably do have their development team. Focus purely on the platform of choice version of the game and then after the first launch, they focus on DLC and the PC.

i think its pretty clear that Forza Horizon is a service game. i view the diff entries in the service as basically expansions or DLCs at this point. you get a brand new huge map and activities, but i've felt that since FH2, its BASICALLY been the same game, so i don't really see the problem with the delisting. but that's just how i play FH's. I play the new one for like 40-100 hours, then i put it down until the next one comes out.

I tried playing some Lego games recently ….. idk if it’s cuz I was alone or eyes but man was it boring. I started with the Star Wars ones back in ps2 I own many of them dc villains to Harry Potter to the incredibles …. They all have the same charm but seem to be missing that “umph “ that it seems they finally found around the latest Star Wars entry imo

i dont have my disc for the original Forza Horizon anymore and it bums me out pretty regularly. To Matty's point, the map was THE draw for me. I don't need any of the licensed music. I wasn't there for that, and I'm a music guy. No Horizon since has captured me the same way. I have a similar issue with Skate 2, can't buy it and 3's map just doesn't hit the same.

Microsoft finally realized the truth and it’s a truth. None of us have been willing to utter out loud. They won’t crack the Japanese market that’s it. It’s not happening, not in the traditional manner that will not happen so let that go. Don’t waste money trying to do so it won’t happen. If you wanna know how bad it is in Japan for Xbox if sales in Japan jumped 500% guess what they would still be abysmal. If sales in Japan jumped 10% they would barely be noticeable. It’s a market to penetrate not through traditional measures not with game studios not with systems and platforms that’s not happening so it’s foolish for them to waste money trying to do so. They thought they could’ve done it several generations ago and you know what they did. They put out the Japanese games on their platform and guess what the Japanese customers did they bought PlayStation they said this is where I grew up. This is where I can find Final Fantasy this is what I will buyand that’s it. You can’t recover from that. It’s a market they will never get into traditional means so don’t waste the money. We don’t have money to waste.

Defending Microsoft Xbox wasn't something I saw coming, licensing always been a thing but now it's just that consumers have direct access to the store inventory and listing directly with those digital stores per se. If you went to a physical store and you didn't find the game you wanted to buy, you would just exit the store or ask if they could order it for you. Nowadays with digital storefronts, you expect the game to be always there, always in stock, always available for you to purchase and you expect said store to continuously pay for the physical space it occupies in the store or server even if it doesn't make business sense and they end up paying more money than they are making because of it. You have so much higher expectations to the point that it goes directly against the laws in regards to licensing. That being said, where are we going from now? If you can't change the law, you can work around the licensing by removing said licensed content out of the game but that means dev time and dev time has a cost. How many people would buy said game after all the devs worked out the licensing out of the game? If gamers aren't welling to pay for those games, who should pay? In a perfect world, everybody would be in good financial conditions to afford paying the devs to push out a version without licensed contents to make the game last forever but you also get the problem of having to support multiples systems that will come and go as they age and become less available too. It's a multilayered issue, when you have to decide where it starts making sense and when it doesn't anymore to support those games, especially if gamers just talk and not act on their words.

One point Cog pointed out about cadence: I dont think Avowed and AssCreed being close to each other is a problem as they are totally different audiences. AssCreed is more mainstream sort of action game while Avowed is more of a competitor to Dragon Age, and I would absolutely choose Avowed over Veilguard as Obsidian always produces bangers, while it feels Bioware has been on a downward trajectory since they botched the Mass Effect 3 ending (Andromeda and Anthem being absolute disasters), and personally for Dragon Age, I only ever enjoyed the first one, 2 was awful and Inquisition I know had its fans but it didnt grab me.

I get the license issues of some games but FH4 is not one of them. There's really no excuse, given the first party nature of it, that they couldn't patch out/over the particular problem area (should be negligible time and effort) . I'll guess music, as apparel is minimal and most cars feature again in FH5, so just take the track/s out and sell as V2 with a bit of a disclaimer on the game page in the store. Yeah it's not your newest version but it's a different flavour to 5, some prefer it and in either case it regularly shows in most popular on gamepass and sales. Strange decision.

It's not a music licensing problem, it's a car licensing problem. Since they use all real cars, and the makers of those cars own the copyright of the cars. Car games have to pay for those licensing deals, and have to follow specific obligations to use those cars. Like I believe to use Toyota cars, a game cannot allow illegal street racing.

The Honey movies are like 30 years old, and if you can just tell a slightly novel angle on a shrunken person story, you’re good to go. The proof of concept is there in non interactive media. And the concept was proven to not be stale with the game, Grounded. Pull on some 90s nostalgia (or whenever Grounded is set) and it could work really well.

Forza was DOA, Starfield sold reasonably but nowhere near what was expected, and Hellblade flopped despite being the most marketed Game on Welfarepass (yes it did have marketing, it was partnered with Amazon and AMD)

I didn't play it when it came out but I really don't understand how Control was such a flop. Played the base game and all the DLC recently on Gamepass and it was really enjoyable imo. Also dude I remember thinking it was so cool that each system had their own special character back in the Soul Calibur 2 days. The game was incredible back then and now it's just disappeared, crazy.
