Me. The choruses are undeniably similar but the rest of it not so much. I'm really confused as to why he would rip off another song when he has written plenty of his own hits...also why is this just coming out now? Makes me sad.

That's not really the standard for determining infringement. That a substantial segment shares 70% of the same notes and chord progression is kind of a slam dunk. Also Sheeran didn't write Photograph by himself; it was co-written with Johnny McDaid, which means either or both of them may have been responsible for lifting the chorus.

It's been "out" for as long as Potograph is. Matt's been having his fun with it during his own performances, too, although he's not the originator of this law suit. He only seem to have put his own cheeky twist on the affair by mashing up his and Ed's choruses on several occasions. "Eire Creative" did a professional video that has the chorus alternating between Matt and Ed: "Matt Cardle VS Ed Sheeran" [ fKAvfGvJWGA ]. Starting at 51s.

I agree, I clicked on this song ready to believe there was no way they'd sound the same. The start reaffirmed that belief, however, during the chorus I felt like I was listening to photograph. I've never been able to pick up on bits that songs copy, and this one was just plain obvious. Most of the people saying it doesn't have any similarities don't realise that ed isn't being sued for copying the entire song, but rather just parts of it. They also don't want to believe that the allegations could be true.

I do not think they are identical they sound just a bit similar but like every guitar song has some of the same chords it is what they have to work with the chords go nicely together and can make a good song. Ed's song got artificially hyped to high hell bc it was set to become a movie track, too. That also might be the reason why the label/Ed chose to let the issue drag on for 2 years without acknowledging efforts from the chorus writers (not Matt) to get in touch. coz slapping an officially disputed song on a movie might not have gone over so well with the film studio. Promo stunts have become a self-serving farce, and everyone cries how they're burning money doing it, still they can't help themselves. Matt otoh kept his head down bc he literally had better things to do when the law suit hit. He'd just started his UK tour and even tho he could've done with a bit of promo for that, he cut off all media outreach for over 2 weeks and focussed on making music. He's been pretty consistent with shying away from hyped stunts, too.

I love Ed Sheeran so much. I thought this was going to be like the lawsuit against Justin Beiber. I was prepared to hear one or two notes similar and feel like it was ridiculous like everyone else. But wow...that chorus is almost note for note. I don't know if Ed co-wrote Photograph (might have been a cowriter that came up with the melody), or even when he wrote the song (I know it was about a past relationship that was several years ago, so if he was to have written in whilst they were in relationship this song could have easily just hit the market). Regardless, I feel bad for both parties. As a songwriter myself, sometimes I hope a chorus I write isn't already out there!! But yeah...poor Ed AND poor Matt. Hope everything works out.

I heard this song in a mall and the melody was stuck in my head for days. Then I found Ed Sheeran's Photograph and thought that was it. I was waiting for it to take off in the end but it never reached the highs so I was puzzled. I was searching for alternate version and covers until I finally figured out I had the wrong song and it's kind of amazing how I found it in the end.

There are literally millions of songs in existence, some will inevitably share similarities. And of course songwriters will inevitably get influenced by other songwriters, both consciously and subconsciously. I don't think that's a reason to kick up a fuss. Unfortunately, with Marvin Gaye's family suing for Blurred Lines and Tom Petty accusing Sam Smith of plagiarism, I think the precedent has now been well and truly set; from now on songwriters will feel like they're treading on eggshells and will constantly be asking themselves "Oh wait, does this part sound too similar to this song?" and "Is that chord progression too close to that song?" It could seriously affect the quality of songwriting. Artists will end up altering a catchy melody for fear it sounds vaguely like one in another song, whilst others will just not bother writing songs out of fear of being accused of plagiarism. I hate greedy, deluded people and the people making these sort of claims are greedy and delusional.

I came here to listen to this song after finding the similarities it shares with Ed Sheeran's "Photograph". After listening closely it seems that the chorus part really have glaring similarities with "Photograph". But I don't mind it because Ed Sheeran is also a good musician. But for what I am most joyful that I found another great singer. I am not into this genre of songs that much so I don't know Ed Sheeran that much as well as Matt beforehand but after listening to this song I realized that I found another magnificent song.
