Dude, same. A friend showed this to me when we were talking about have religious uptightness can lead to severe sexual issues among young people. I was pleasantly surprised to see this guy not taking the route of the person he was mad at, which is what I usually grew up with in the Catholic Church not too long ago. I'm also an atheist, but I applaud Chandler for people who are acting like false Christians. You're supposed to be welcoming to everybody, not treating them like dirt or horrible Sinners who could never be forgiven

It seems a lot of people are confused about what Matt Chandler is saying in this video. The pastor he is criticizing was attempting to produce sanctification in people through guilt and shame. He's trying to produce the fruit of faith without preaching the Gospel. He's preaching law. The Gospel certainly reveals our sin and we most definitely should see our guilt and weep but Christ's response is that he takes that guilt and shame upon himself. It is only this message, that we are desired by Christ and justified by his work, that produces faith (Romans 10:17).

Ding! Look I have my problems with Matt Chandler's Visions for Church and his charismatic leanings, but I don't say the man preaches a false gospel. This was great and something I'd recommend to anyone specifically women feeling that their sexual past is too much to overcome and they can't become a christian. This is completely on point.

Does Chandler use guilt and shame in the closing prayer here? www.tvcresources.net/resource-library/sermons/womans-hurdles/ "Father, for men in this room who prey on insecure women with wounded hearts, Father, I just pray over these men a type of weight on their souls that would be crushing. Father, I thank you that you do not take lightly wolves hunting down your daughters and that there would be a day that these men, hollow-chested boys in grown up bodies will cry out as you come for mountains to fall and that the mountains will flee before your coming. I thank you that you are a just judge who will not handle lightly boys who can shave who take advantage of your daughters. I pray that there might be repentance for these men for the salvation of their own soul."

He has a heart for the lost. That's his calling. - An evangelist. ❤️ whereas Maybe the preacher was not evangelically minded and just liked preaching about sexual diseases with no discernment of the possibility someone was in the congregation that could have been saved had he preached in the love Of God which draws man to repentance rather than teaching sex education. Just a thought. We all have different gifts and callings. This guy Marks is clearly an evangelical one. And his heart is bursting with desire to share with people THE LOVE IF JESUS CHRIST 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

How would congregation react if story went like this. I had a male friend who was having an affair with a married woman. I used to babysit the married woman's kids (while she had the affair with my friend) as I wanted them to treat me as a non judgmental friend. My friend came to church and the pastor that day spoke about Herod beheading John the Baptist because he called him out on his adulterous affair. I squirmed because I knew my friend was sleeping with a married woman. How dare the pastor condemn adultery? He should talk about redemption. God loves the rose. My friend is the rose. What does it matter if he was committing adultery. It is not the pastor's job to make people feel bad about their sin. How dare he make a sermon like that? You do not call out on adultery. You only talk about redemption. Talk about salvation and redemption BUT please do NOT call people out on their sin. Please do not make people FEEL bad about sin.

I personally don't believe in god (I've had some difficult experiences growing up in the church and I'm queer) but this does make me feel. I completely understand where this man's anger comes from, especially towards a man who is condemning those who are broken and wounded, not even necessarily of their own volition. Victims of sexual assault may want to turn to religion to help heal, and while i personally don't believe it, i do understand and respect the rights of others to believe in whatever gods or texts they want. But if someone's first impression of christianity is THIS. Fearmongering and talking about purity like it's something completely necessary in order to get an eternity in paradise are inherently against the gospel itself. Jesus accepts anyone and everyone who calls him their savior, and saying that you have to be "pure" is just not true in the slightest.

You are 100% on point about how fearmongering and toxic purity culture goes completely against Jesus’s teachings. Jesus sat with sinners with no regards to their past, and we should be able to do the same.

Are churches perfect? Good grief no, because they're inhabited by humans who do and will mess up. If you ever found a perfect church you wouldn't be able to join it because you'd make it imperfect. Church is so important for your spiritual development! You need to learn from other Christians, and you need to hang out with them! I thank God every single day for my friends at church because it is so refreshing talking to them and having support in the Christian walk of life in a secular world.

So I think you are really acting high and mighty here .

+Livingwater Freelygiven We confess & repent daily. But to take out GRACE, is to take out JESUS. "he made him who knew no sin, so that in him we may become the righteousness of God". Matt Chandler never said sin isn't bad. He is saying, we need to be gentle and loving to people who dont understand the gospel. He has preached many a time, that when someone is living in sin, that you lovingly speak truth to them.

Yep, I hear and feel Matt's anger and frustration, and likely Kim's pain, in the shame-only gospel-void message as he recalls heard it at the concert. Can we also do an empathy exercise from a different perspective on this story? Let's call the married man whom Kim was having an affair with "Jim" and his wife "Jane", and let's imagine Jane watching this clip. At 1:10 she hears, with something of a chuckle in his voice, that Matt served as baby-sitter to Kim during the time period in which she and Jim were in an ongoing sexual relationship. "I wonder," Jane very well might think, "if the baby-sitting that Matt and his generous Christian friends provided helped give Kim more time to sleep with my husband?" Next, Jane hears the manner in which these Christian men discussed the matter of adultery with Kim. In what sounds like soft, positive and encouraging, non-judgmental tones, Jane learns that Matt "talked through the wisdom" of Kim getting naked in bed with Jane's husband, and that they went about "just kind of serving her and trying to explain to her spiritual things." Jane can hear Matt chatting with Kim, "Are you sure that having sex with another woman's husband is the WISEST thing you could be doing?" As Jane's heart is cut with the inexpressibly painful reminders of her husband's infidelity, she notes that Matt does not use the word "horrific", or anything similar, to describe Jim and Kim's adultery. Jane also notes that Matt's teeth-clenching anger (3:06) at the concert preacher does not seem to arise in like manner in connection with the deep and painful damage that Jim and Kim inflicted upon Jim and Jane's sacred one-flesh union. I could very well hear the grating of dissonance in Jane's heart if it were to say, "So the concert messager incited 'real, legitimate, I want to hurt him anger' in you, but while speaking of the irony of your own baby-sitting service for the woman who was giving herself for my husband to go inside of, a mere chuckle rises up?" It breaks my heart to imagine the concert scene from Kim's perspective. It also breaks my heart to think of this clip from Jane's perspective. And if I try to view my sin from Christ's perspective... who would've imagined that such shame and disgust could intermingle with such joy, love, freedom, and liberty? I do not believe I could give a more empathetically wholistic sermon than Matt Chandler. The point is not to bash him. The point, I suppose, is this: who is up to the incredibly difficult, impossible task of loving sinners with adequate gospel love, while adequately hating the sinfulness of sin accounting for all the destructiveness it spreads out upon multiple people in multiple ways, while upholding the offense against the impeccable holiness of God our Creator and King, and while adequately expressing the luxurious and lavish mercy, grace, and kindness of the Prodigal Father? I'm certainly not up to the task. With due respect I don't think that Matt Chandler is either. But praise be to Jesus, the Lion and the Lamb, the Judge and the Scapegoat, who is our all in all!
@lydiamill
@lydiamill 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's important to see that the root cause of Jane's hurt is not Kim sleeping with a married man. It that the married man is Jim. Jim was the one to make a vow before God that he would be faithful to Jane. Kim can decide if she wants to participate in Jim's infidelity. However, even if Kim removes herself from the situation, that does not mean Jim is going to go back to being faithful to Jane; he could find another lover. While Kim may know she is aiding in Jim's adultery, Kim did not break Jim and Jane's wedding vows, because she never vowed anything. Jim did. Jim is the one who needs to answer to Jane for his infidelity.
@zacharyharris633
@zacharyharris633 4 жыл бұрын
@@lydiamill Those are true and worthwhile points you have made which help to provide a fuller perspective as we think through the most significant aspects of such a situation. My comments above have the particular focus they do because I'm (ultimately) trying to make observations directly on the video clip of Matt Chandler's sermon itself. Granted, I did have to introduce "Jim" and "Jane" into the story, and Jane's perspective on Kim's participation in Jim's adultery, but all of that was for the (somewhat roundabout) purpose of noting how parts of *Mr. Chandler's message itself* could come across from an outside perspective (e.g. Jane's). So, when Mr. Chandler quotes the concert preacher as saying, "Now who would want this?" the words of the unnamed preacher grieve my heart. But also when Mr. Chandler speaks of Kim, "actually in an extra-marital affair at the time with a married man," the tone and body language of Mr. Chandler himself also grieves my heart. And when Mr. Chandler describes some of his discussion with Kim as "talking through the wisdom of" participating in an adulterous affair, that also grieves my heart. So I brought "Jane" in to help describe why my heart grieves at certain points of Mr. Chandler's message. I certainly agree that "Jim is the [primary] one who needs to answer to Jane for his infidelity" as far as the situation itself would be concerned, it's just that that (incredibly important) point didn't need to be drawn out in order to explain my reaction to aspects of Mr. Chandler's presentation in the video clip itself. I hope that makes sense. Now, it occurs to me that you could likewise say that your comment was motivated by grief in your heart while reading the original Zach Harris comment, sensing in it a lack of attentiveness to the primacy of Jim's grievous culpability in sinning against his wife, and such. In which case, yes, yes, I would see your point.

Had you not been able to see the video and were only able to hear his words, would you have changed your mind? I don't see this hand sign that you are referencing. The message is very biblical. Jesus' life is the ultimate penalty for every sin of every man, woman, and child. That is the basic gospel message. You are not perfect (and never will be) and Jesus bridges the gap between your and my sin and filth and God's perfect, holiness and love.

Your point about middle east women certainly drives it home. I will point out though that it doesn't help a guy/gal struggling with lust when you have no choice but to exist in an environment where the opposite gender dresses provocatively. Of course, this does not reduce the responsibility of the luster by one bit, but it is something to keep in mind. Then again, people find various things provocative, lol.
@katmaw5910
@katmaw5910 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - agreed. We should see that we don't dress provocatively to better support our struggling brothers and sisters who don't want to lust. We want to help them. But likewise it is the responsibility of the luster to struggle and fight in the Lord's strength. It is a cooperation. Sadly some people will find any excuse to lust after someone, however they may look and plenty ladies dress modestly not to better serve but out of fear of being harassed or even worse. I completely agree with you

Big problem here with what Chandler is saying. The pastor said the rose represented a person's sexuality-NOT THEIR PERSONHOOD. The rose was passed among 1000 people in the audience and almost ruined. And our body doesn't really do well sexually when passed around and around. The pastor was actually correct. The pastor did not say the person (the rose) has no value to God and Jesus. He said it is not good to pass your body around sexually and you might find yourself unwanted by another person. But not God. That is true. He never said...nobody would want that person, and neither would God. People really need to think about what is being said here. Chandler came to a wrong conclusion and got really mad about it...and has shared this story so many times for some reason. That's unhealthy. By Chandler's own account (since none of us were there) he drew a conclusion...and it sounds like he was wrong...but it made for an adrenaline-producing story for those with poor listening skills...so the hype kept on growing and here it is today. Chandler supports a man (Mark Driscoll) who wrote a book containing a chapter on how wives can effectively sodomize their husbands (prohibited in the Bible as an un-natural use of the body) and yet he had a problem with a pastor calling a congregation to sexual purity???? How can that be? This whole story makes no sense because the comment, "Jesus wants the rose" doesn't really apply to the situation. Jesus wants a personal relationship with us...but surely not a human sexual relationship. Open your listening ears and listen to what Matt said here. Not saying he is a bad person...just saying this is poor listening and flawed logic.

I don't agree but this is the only critique in these comments that has made any attempt to be logical about what has been said here. Thanks for not just throwing out ad hominem arguments or talking about your liver quivers.

I just watched the video again, and there is nothing in the video which suggests that the pastor was referring to a person's sexuality as being just ONE aspect of their personality. If the pastor was truly referring to sexuality of the rose, why didn't he say " I am referring to the texture of this rose, something that is just ONE PART of it." Instead, what the pastor said was " WHO WOULD WANT THIS?" And when he did that , he was referring to the whole rose as it was, damaged bruised and broken. He was referring to the rose as a whole, including its smell, its texture. In the same way we could also say that he was referring to the whole person, their personality and their essence, their body and their soul, in short, everything about them. The main point is that we as a society have made a business out of judging people based on how many people they have slept with. And if a pastor is doing that then he is perpetuating a message that is not of God but is of the world. Pastors are not supposed to preach that kind of message. If that message is being passed around in worldly circles, it shouldn't be perpetuated in a church and certainly not by a man of God. I personally think you're trying to put words into the pastors mouth because the pastor said "who would want this?" Meaning , "You must be crazy to want something this damaged". And yet YOU say " The pastor never said nobody would want it." You're right , he never said so explicitly, but its implied in the wording that no one , except the most depraved madman would want it, and certainly no one would want to be seen as a depraved madman. And yet Jesus must have seemed that way to many members of his society at the time. Jesus took a Samaritan woman at the well who had had 5 husbands and turned her into an evangelist. In that time and place, would she not have been referred to as a bruised, worthless rose? And yet he saw her value. That's the point Matt Chandler is trying to make. You CANNOT judge people based on their sexuality. Even if what you're saying is true and they pastor was only referring to a persons sexuality, why would he then say "who would want this". That's still a very bad message to pass on to people, because indirectly you're teaching young people that they're crazy if they don't judge others based on their sexuality which is still not a very good message.

If you go to Matt Chandler's church website, many of his sermons from 2008-2009 are largely cut out. He said in many of his recent sermons that the church did so because of a immature angst that was pertained in it. This was early 2009, he was and still is a young preacher with a vast majority of his congregation being young adults. He, himself, acknowledged that this wasn't right nor biblical so I think we can all give him the by on this one. What's important is where Pastor Chandler stands right now.

Umm actually Jesus will marry her one day when he's united with the church. There's a wedding feast. The church is his bride. If we are in repentance and faith, we are in Christ, despite our sins. Luke 7:36-50 That woman was the rose.

Your struggle with lust is not the responsibility of young women. That is your walk and your struggle. In the middle east women wear burkas and men still lust. So guess what? How girls dress won't cure your urges.
@ea-tr1jh
@ea-tr1jh 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I also don't think that lust is every guys problem. The only reason churches present lust as "every man's battle" is because men are visual and they misinterpret that to mean "aLl MeN lUsT". Men are visual, but that doesn't mean all of them lust. Also, churches often misinterpret sexual attraction and think it is lust. If a guy accidently sees a girl naked, he can feel attracted to her appearance and STILL avoid lusting. Attraction is a biological function that is incontrolable. Lust is a consequence of the Fall and IS controllable and preventable. Of course, he shouldn't stare. Look away, dude lol. Its possible, people. But I will also add, that if a girl knows a guy in particular who struggles with lust, she may just help him out by covering up more. Its his problem and responsibility, sure, and he'll probably see scantily clad women in the public world, but whats wrong with helping a brother out?

He is not against following gods law (maybe slow down on the pride & misinterprations);,,,,, he’s against damaging/crushing people who have left trauma and their past,,, who are trying to find Jesus… Jesus didn’t win peoples hearts through condemnation or crushing them - but the Pharisees sure talked that way “you don’t wanna sipholus do ya?” That’s something they would have said ; the holier than thou types - whereas Jesus favours the man who beats his breast and says Lord I am such a wretched sinner help me !
