It sounds like the cat just needs baby-free zones she can escape to, like cat trees and furniture out of the baby's reach. Little kids make a lot of noise and unpredictable movements which can scare animals that aren't used to it. If the baby corners the cat, the cat might lash out and one of them might get injured. Also make sure the baby has no access to the litter box, feeding area, kitty bed, etc., so the cat doesn't get disturbed. If she feels like she can't even take a pee in private, that might play a factor in why she is refusing the litter box. Putting up an additional litter box and cleaning areas she has previously peed in with an enzyme cleaner might also help. You should also teach the kid to be gentle with the cat, so they should always be supervised whem together. If the kid gets forceful and won't leave the cat alone, you have to interfere to prevent a confrontation. And don't forget to love on your cat! She needs attention and entertainment too, and that might sometimes fall short when caring for a new addition to the family Rehoming a pet should always be the LAST solution, and I'm glad to hear that Matt isn't considering it. :)

Hey Matt, if you happen to see this, try "Catifying" your house if you haven't already. Nothing crazy, necessarily, but adding shelves that create a sort of jungle-gym for her to traverse might help. It will not only give the cat her own space that the baby cannot get to, but it will also give her a removed spot to observe the baby's movements from above and become accustomed to her. She might need to be played with more, too. Also, how many litter boxes do you have? The general rule is one for each cat plus one more. I had a similar issue with my kitty and these things helped me. Wish you the best!

i had a maincoon, and catifying a house with shelves when you have a maincoon has its challenges. They are heavy cats, all that constant pouncing on shelves tears them off the wall on just a few months. you REALLY need to reinforce them. its like dropping a bowling ball on the shelf several times a day, every day.

Yes, I agree. Get something your cat can climb on (like a tall cat apartment) where she can be safe from the baby. Also, your cat can pick-up when you're anxious so try to relax. I had no issues with my baby and 2 cats because they always had somewhere to go where their tail couldn't be grabbed.

Margeaux is truly a stellar creature and if you listen to "I Was There Too" one of Matt's old podcasts you hear her guest star a lot because the amazing thing about Maine Coons is also how vocal they are! One time Matt fully interviewed her and she literally would respond and I haven't laughed that hard in a long time! Matt, I would recommend maybe trying to keep her in a bathroom with her box for a day. Whenever you introduce new cats to a household they recommend doing this so maybe now that Glenn is crawling you kinda have to reintroduce Margeaux to where her box is and what's proper. I also like a lot of the suggestions that say give her height so that she can have spots that escape where Glenn can reach! Good luck and definitely do not get rid of Margeaux! It's always sad to me when people just say "Oh well the pet and the kid aren't really co-existing great so let's dump our beloved animal," without even really trying!

For my daughter, I even wrote a parody to Monty Python's Lumberjack Song, called Stinker-butt Song, and when I was potty training her, even wrote a potty parody to Aqua's "Barbie Girl" called "Potty Girl" to encourage potty time

Sounds like Matt needs to have more spots where the cat can get away, up high. Where the cat could be in the same room as the baby but be up high away from the baby. But usually the cat's probably marking if they're forcing the cat to be in a room that it doesn't want to be in, or cutting it off from rooms that it used to be able to go into. No advice for the cat thing, I haven't had cats in my adult life. But Matt Gourley is an Intergalactic Treasure, as is Amanda 'FunBunz' Lund. Margeaux the Fat Guy is a longtime favorite creature in her own right. I can only assume that Glenn has fine qualities as well. I adopted a 9-year-old fat cat that was put in a shelter because he hated the family's new baby. When the cat was dropped off, the shelter was told he was mean, bitey, and generally a jerk. They even had him separated in his own room. I figured he had gotten a bad deal, so I took him home (I was single at the time). After a few days of acclimation, he was the sweetest, most wonderful animal you could ever ask for. He was like a miniature teddy bear who slept with me under the covers and was never more than 5 feet away from me in the apartment. Sometimes animals are so used to being "top cat" that the introduction of a child changes them forever. Believe me, if he's put up for adoption, he will find a wonderful home with a good family and he will be much happier and more well-behaved. Matt and his family have given him everything he needs up to this point, but now he just needs to be the center of attention again, and adoption is the best way for that to happen.

Pretty sure he just said that she had fleas recently and then said that she went to the vet (probably for the litter box issues) and got an enema while she was there. He never actually said the enema was to treat the fleas.
