The short answer is, nothing they tell you carries any weight. They are not in a position to give you legal advice and they don't have to tell you the truth. But a more nuanced answer is, that even if the conversation happened they way he said, that isn't totally at odds with what he was convicted of. He asked if he could make the card with the image on it. But he was convicted based on this part of the definition: "or combination of parts designed and intended for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun". Note - there's nothing in there about the parts actually working. Which is bizarre, but there you go. Intent is what matters here, and unfortunately he provided plenty of evidence that made it seem like he did intend for them to be cut out and used. The videos he made implying that that's what they were for, and how to evade detection by the gov't are what got him here. Did he ask the ATF "hey can I sell these cards with the image on them, while telling people that they can be used to make a machinegun and giving advice on how people can avoid getting caught with them"? If he had they would probably have said no. Maybe he was only joking. But context and intent matter when it comes to what is and is not legal. I feel sorry for the guy and I disagree with the law, but its more complicated than people are saying. I hope he gets pardoned somehow or wins on appeal.

Actually, your outrage toward the judge is misplaced; this type of case shows exactly what is wrong with the federal criminal "justice" system; federal judges are constrained by somewhat mandatory sentencing guidelines; and the Government can appeal sentences as "too lenient" as they have for Stewart Rhodes and five other Oath Keepers involved in Jan 6 -- this is something you just don't see at the state level very often (I've actually never seen it in my own practice in Idaho and I've handled hundreds if not thousands of sentencings)

I have had civil forfeiture happen to me in 2008, they took a payed off nice car and 5,700 in cash. They never charged me with a crime but took my belongings, wrote me a receipt of what they took and a week later I get a letter in the mail asking if I wanted to go to court to get my assets back. I replied yes, and wanted a jury, not just a judge. They then said that they filed my paper work wrong, I never got a jury. They are literal badge pirates, it sickens me to my core. That was the day I lost faith in our legal system. If you want to win you have to either play dirty or jump through a million hoops. And it’s going to cost money/time (time is money) lots of money.

I had a judge that told both my attorney and the prosecutor that entrapment is a civil violation and that was his ruling for a dismissal- everyone knows the atf changed meanings of words and lied and regardless of the suck up sock puppet jury finding him guilty he is innocent and everyone knows that so the judge could modify his sentence and release matt to go home and wait for an appeal and ruling, also I would recommend a judicial review and question the evidence.

I was arrested for attempted murder for stopping a drunk that held a knife to a woman's throat yelling he was going to cut her head off after he had already cut my hand open. My attorney continued to try to negotiate for me to make a deal which I continued to refuse to do (but a lot do not because they are guilty but because of mandatory sentencing that helps to railroad innocent people through a very unballanced court system) so the day of jury selection the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence and no recourse for compensation either. You only have the right to self defense if you die or if the DA doesn't prosecute, so a lot of courts have an expert witnesses that invent make believe evidence even if there is no crime.

I'm sorry but to lose a case we're all evidence from the ATF was made up. Matt's lawyers should have brought in metal coat hangers and a jar of Jiff. And told the jury according to AFT the metal coat hangers are machine guns and the jar of Jiff is a suppressor. The point of it being ATF really has to go far outside the box to make the auto key card fire once.. and according to ATF it really took a while and many tires before they actually got one to fire. I had jury duty a year ago. That was a huge eye opener. The preliminary vote had 11 vs me the one dissenting juror, after holding the line and pushing back slowly one by one they came to my point of view and went 12-0. Plea deals hold real weight, leaving your fate in the hands of juries is a spooky prospect now. Given the recent Bruen decision, the last-minute instructions that should have led to a mistrial, and the blatant violation of the First and Second Amendments, there is absolutely no way that the Supreme Court wouldn't rule in Matt's favor. @dv8322 Because the NFA is unconstitutional with the recent Bruen decision and that the verdict sets a precedent for more constitutional violations. The Auto Keycard is a DRAWING. Drawings are not, by definition, a machine gun. As the Justice Department admits, they had to manufacture an auto sear by dremeling it out. Which is in direct contrast to the legal definition of a machine gun: "Any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger". You need to cut the auto sear out of sheet metal, which is the actual manufacture of a machine gun, not the Auto Keycard itself. If drawings are machine guns, then are 3D models of guns also machine guns? They are essentially drawings that require extensive manufacture to make machine guns/SBRs/etc. What sets the two apart? At the end of the day, this is an overreach of the ATF to try to curb the First Amendment while also violating the Second. But who knows? This might be the smoking gun that might result in the repeal of the NFA if Matt files for a writ of certiorari and seeks Supreme Court review. Especially since this is a federal trial.

I suspect the sentences were so severe because the judge and prosecution believe this trial has a good chance to be reversed on appeal. But of course by the time an appeal plays out, most of their time in jail will have already have been served. This is an insane injustice that should never have occurred in in civilized society.
