@ezradanger24 күн бұрын
Just for shits and giggles, I copy and pasted your comment into my phone's Gemini assistant. Here's what it came up with. Some people treat science as a belief system by placing absolute faith in its findings, regardless of personal understanding. This tendency is exacerbated by the increasing specialization and complexity of scientific fields, which creates a significant knowledge gap between experts and the general public. This leads to several issues: * Accepting scientific claims without scrutiny: Much like dogma, some individuals may accept scientific findings as absolute truth without questioning methodologies or limitations. This is particularly problematic when individuals lack the scientific literacy to understand the research themselves. They are essentially forced to take scientific pronouncements "on faith," trusting in the authority of scientists and institutions. This creates a vulnerability to misinformation and the misrepresentation of scientific findings. * Seeking moral guidance from science: People may look to science to answer questions about morality and purpose, potentially leading to the creation of a "scientific" ethical framework. This can be problematic if the underlying science is misunderstood or selectively interpreted. * Elevating scientists to near-prophet status: Prominent scientists may be seen as infallible authorities, with their pronouncements accepted without question. This can stifle critical thinking and lead to an uncritical acceptance of even preliminary or contested findings. The "appeal to authority" fallacy becomes particularly potent in this context. * Using science to validate personal beliefs: Some may selectively interpret scientific findings to support pre-existing worldviews, similar to how religious texts are sometimes used. This can lead to the cherry-picking of data and the dismissal of contradictory evidence. The lack of personal capacity for peer review or even basic comprehension of complex research necessitates a degree of trust in scientific institutions and the scientific process. However, this trust should not be blind faith. It's crucial to promote scientific literacy, encourage critical thinking, and foster transparency in scientific communication to bridge the knowledge gap and prevent the misuse of scientific authority.

Yeah, Wenning has had my eyebrow raising for a while now. On table talk he implied that he dropped 6 figures on a PhD. He also seems to be stealing clout from Charles Poliquin. Even saying he had to reteach Poliquin to squat his way because he had cooked his knees. Even claiming that Poliquin changed his mind about the knees over toes thing. Nobody is saying this but him, and it wasn't ever actually a situation where Poliquin just didn't have the facts. He had the highest pedigree among strength coaches. I can go on all day about red flags, but let me just say that I'm very well studied in marketing, and sales. Everything about Wenning's content is from the dark side of marketing. He is definitely being manipulative. The funny thing is, that most of the modern consumers have developed a resistance to that. It's actually turning a lot of his prospects off. In modern marketing, and sales you have to prioritize building trust more than you use to, and his cheap, low effort self stroking is almost certainly working against him.

We either took 3 or 4 classes per semester when I was in grad school. There wasn't much push to go much faster, and some of the courses could be quite time consuming outside of class, on top of a TA or RA position (note: 3.5 minimum GPA required). I did mostly RA work, except for one year when there wasn't as much funding and I volunteered to TA for a undergrad design course. I ran the labs, graded homeworks and had open office hours which were almost entirely unattended until finals came around. Funny how that works. 🤣 I wanted to finish my M.S. in 2 years, but I was right up against the deadline with my thesis defense and due to needed some edits from my committee, it ended up taking another semester. Most of the professors in my department were guiding the master's students toward a 3 year schedule, and also toward master's 'projects' which has less requirements on your thesis. I thought that was kinda ridiculous and just did the 'thesis' anyways. IIRC the major difference was very specific requirements for the formatting of the document...which was really easy to set up in LaTeX. I think most of the doctoral students just did PhDs with typical dissertations. I'm not sure if there was an EngD type program set up. Oh, and PhDs absolutely have to go through qualifying exams, which can be pretty gnarly in technical fields. They can weed out a lot of doctoral candidates.

Even in the Westside space, Matt has completely coined everything from Louie, the Russians, the Bulgarians systems and twisted it into thinking he figured out the hacks himself with the Wenning warmups, then when asked about it, he was the one pushed out of Westside when it was his ego getting in the way. I met him last year at the Arnold and the dude is a great guy to talk to one on one but wants a pat on the back so much about what he has done reading old Russian books about nothing different than what Super Training and the Conjugate method talk about. It is a little shocking to me because if you talk to most Westside guys about Conjugate training, most of them add the comment, "It's a way, NOT THE WAY!" saying that yes conjugate is a system that works, but not the system above all systems. He does some things right with the Wenning Belt Squat, the machine has taught me to keep my adductors out and to stay back on my heels when squatting. The whole 8 core classes of a phd is actually somewhat plausible (assuming he also got 'research' based 'course' credits)... the focus in grad school is NOT courses taken, its almost all research based. There's a reason why many programs have 5-year combined undergrad/masters programs... you don't need that many classes for upper level courses. Generally speaking, a grad student should expect 2-4 classes per semester for their first year or mayybe two... and then a sporadic class or maybe two every other semester (if that). The whole "C" grade thing is pretty true though, lol: in grad school, a grade of a "C" is basically equivalent to failing "F" in undergrad (or at least "D"s)... However, I do not agree with your 'reasoning' for why that is being "because, you're expected to be an expert in your/this field" LMAOOO, absolutely not (maybe it words/title... but definitely not practice, lol). The average grad student (or at least the phd track) didn't give a single crap about their course work, and definitely didn't care about being "masters" of their respective material, lololol.

I would think his history as a power lifter and Masters (if his website is honest) would be enough to be an authority figure on the subject of lifting.

I'm in Britain, which used "Dr" and "Professor" slightly differently, but it;s the same here. However, and as much as I hate to be "this 2015 own the essjaydublUs guy" I have seen some of the gender studies phds insist on being called "Dr" outside of an academic setting (about 10 years ago I overheard one of them insisting on being called "Doctor" in the campus doctor's surgery, lol).
@TheSandkastenverbot23 күн бұрын
As someone who's worked about 3 years full time for a phd in engineering I've grown accustomed to the fact that medical doctors get their doctorate for almost nothing. Their thesis is usually equivalent or even less than a bachelor's or master's thesis in another subject. But as I said, I accept that as a historical relict. For most people, doctor and physician are synonymous and, ironically, for them real scientists aren't "real doctors". But the way the US sells doctorates to all kinds of people is on another level of enraging. All kinds of professionals in the medical field like chiropractors or physical therapists get a doctorate. Sports "scientists" have a few people work out in a gym for 6 months and get a doctorate for that. The economization of education in that country opened the door to corruption.

I discounted Matt after watching his video on why powerlifting builds less muscle than bodybuilding. Apparently your fast twitch muscle fibers are smaller than your slow twitch fibers. Powerlifters only build their fast twitch fibers and therefore, don't grow as much. I doubt you could even attain even an undergraduate degree with such a basic misunderstanding.

Off the top of my head, he posted a video in response to Milo Wolf about how much protein is really needed recently and also softly disagreed with Mike Israetel on a video they did together. Ok so there's a few things I think need to be addressed. Post graduate degrees are generally divided into two types : Coursework and research. It is unusual to have a coursework PhD and would be a good sign of a scam or degree mill. The only exceptions are careers like veterinary science, medicine, dentistry and perhaps psychology. The US obviously has some differences to the UK/rest of the world. In the UK an honours degree is usually baked into an undergraduate degree but this isn't true everywhere, this would be for lots of people their first foray into postgraduate studies. The rest of the world doesn't hold to the grades rant you went on. Standards vary by course by subject etc. It's probably pretty feasible to finish a course with a C. But the rest of the world doesn't really use A/B/C for university grading and those grading bands also vary but usually it's first/upper second / lower second / third. An exceptional student will be given a degree cum laude or summa cum laude. If you're doing a degree by research this will solely be judged on a dissertation. Mine was about 200 pages. Degrees by research often take far longer to complete. It's a very sad thing that many who know nothing about academics want to stop those who achieve PhDs from using the title doctor. It's not necessary and actually these people are showing they don't understand even what PhD stands for (doctorate of philosophy). In this case it seems open and shut that this was a degree mill but it's likely his masters program was legitimate, although because it was coursework there's no proof of this but someone could contact the faculty I'm sure. My point with this comment is don't speak too much in absolutes because to someone outside of America it would sound like you were making up some crazy system.
