I am a Matt Murphy fan girl. I lived in HB, was on the same beach area with friends where R. Alcala found Robin, I was in high school then. My brother’s good friend in high school worked with Matt, he was a first grade detective. Matt Murphy has made OC proud.

I have read Matt’s first book before seeing this interview, and now, after this great interview, I would be definitely interested in Matt’s next writing! Dax, you are good at your job, thank you. Love Matt Murphy, I saw him surfing Newport Beach years ago. Grew-up in OC, awesome to see how far and great he has become. I was a teenager hanging out with friends at HB where Alcala found Robin. It was scary, we had a lot of serial killers in the 70’s. I’m now surfing Hawai’i, hope Matt still gets time to catch some waves…

I'm a Family Medicine PA with a background in cultural anthropology and public health, so my perspective has little to do with the criminal/legal factors, but I wanted to speak to the suggestion of grading SA crimes. TL;DR Like manslaughter or murder (an all-or-nothing crime resulting in a dead body), SA is an all-or-nothing crime resulting in permanent brain changes, decades lost in quality of life & social contributions & billions in income for survivors taken off course in higher education, careers, and health. Social biases against believing survivors & self-preservation inform jury/judge decisions to protect more privileged/valued aggressors. Convincing our institutions/society that the crimes are less serious isn't the goal; it's convincing them that the survivors (usually marginalized people) are just as valuable as everyone else. The all-or-nothing aspect of SA convictions is appropriate, because of the impact it has on the target who experienced it. Not in the sense of a "zombie bite" that turns them into a monster, but because it does permanently change a person's brain, alters the trajectory of the rest of their life, and costs them decades in terms of quality of life. The data around billions lost from years women could have been pursuing higher education, getting better jobs, etc, and how that affects their quality of life along with society as a whole is astounding. It's an all-or-nothing change for the ones who survive. Unlike manslaughter or murder, there isn't a dead body, but they are not living the lives they would have had. Healing is possible, but it is a process and again, the brain is changed. Survivors of less physically violent SA crimes make up the majority of cases, but they don't have any broken bones to point to and they're usually dismissed across all institutions and social settings. Some psychologists argue their psychological suffering is worse even though their physical wounds are less serious, because they're ruminating and reliving the event, trying to find the nugget that will "prove" they aren't crazy and don't deserve this. Psychological pain activates physical pain receptors, and each person processes that differently, so I would be very hesitant to say one crime is less severe from another because SA is so heavily psychological. And most aggressors know that; they leverage their social privilege & the target's freeze/fawn response to get what they want. That is not to say it's "better" to be more overtly and "believably" violently attacked in an SA event. As we know, even when all the evidence of a horrific crime is undeniable, juries and judges will still side with the aggressor and let them have another go. (So many cases come to mind, but the one where the little girl used an infrared night camera to record her father coming to molest her, and the forensics team using the infrared to identify his unique arm vein patterns like fingerprints since his face wasn't in view, and the jury still deciding he was innocent is particularly enraging for me - this was in the UK). So, maybe grading SA crimes would help in some cases (like bilateral intoxication), but it could perpetuate some existing harm for survivors who tend not to be believed. "Oh, he didn't break any bones, so we'll let him go in a year." The current sentencing practices are another challenge. I say go ahead and "ruin" that kid's athletic or academic career for life. He earned it. I don't care if he planned on becoming a doctor. I don't want him near my patients. But I think Dax's suggestion of grading SA crimes was trying to address the problem of getting more convictions in arenas where people prefer to turn a blind eye than perhaps irrevocably change the defendant's life. I think jurors and judges are afraid of hurting one person they and society sees as more valuable than another person, and they don't want the perceived guilt or backlash. I don't think the answer is to convince them the crime was less serious. I think it's to convince them the "less valuable" person in the room is actually just as valuable as everyone else. Getting the conviction for these aggressors is a social problem, because society doesn't believe women (or other marginalized groups). The fact these aggressors exist to begin with, after living the most cushy childhoods, is a social problem, because society sees women as things to be owned/conquered/displayed/degraded (along with other marginalized groups). The aggressors think they live in a world of no consequences because they're at the top of the social hierarchy, and society just keeps telling them they're right. Even when they've clearly been r*ping and murdering children for years. Why is it so hard for us to put these guys in a corner? Why is it so acceptable for the marginalized to a) be marginalized, b) suffer or die, and c) lose decades of heart and genius that they might have contributed to the world had we not decided that they're expendable?

Monica saying she’s been around a lot of women and can “really feel it” holds 0 weight unfortunately in this conversation when she literally lives in the the most liberal part of the country and admittdly is a huge democrat. You living in a silo is exactly why you are so confused by the choice Americans made.
@ClockoutnchillАй бұрын
Thank you Talk about being disconnected she’s disconnected from the entire American community she says those people you mean 95% of Americans who work blue-collar jobs yeah those people like my people my family my ancestors my friends and their ancestors and their parents those people what world are you living in where you can see those people

@@iwasjustwondering_ I actually want to change something that I said. Monica’s feelings DO hold weight. But it represents only a percentage of our country and she has to understand that the majority of the country voted a certain way for certain reasons. And that reason can’t only be that they dont care about women. I don’t want to completely discount her pov it’s just not representative of this country.

This is the first episode I've seen and it was great. I always love to see Matt. He is so interesting. As far as guys going to college, so many now are going into good paying trades instead because they don't want to have all the debt that comes with a college education. There are trades that pay very very well and at the end of the day you go home and put your work behind you until the next day. There's a lot less stress and and not much worry about moving up the ladder. A lot of guidance counselors are talking to kids about this in high schools now. Or just going to a two year community college because not all businesses require a college degree anymore. Ivy League definitely is not needed anymore unless you want to make $250k right out of school.

Monica, first and foremost, you look absolutely adorable in the fact check. Love your sense of fashion. And I’m not buttering you up just to tear you down but you are so out of touch and far removed from the way regular people think and live. I am a woman, with a modest home, a child with one on the way and a single income. I may not be “struggling to out food on the table” by your standards but I am sick of paying for double, triple, quadruple the amount for my groceries. It’s not sustainable and not worth the struggle to put through the single worst presidential candidate in history just because she’s a woman.

Great interviews! I feel like Matt Murphy thinks he (via his FBI friends) knows who the Zodiac killer likely is and doesn’t think it’s Arthur Leigh Allan, but he’s doing the play along to get along thing. He does this at other points in the interview where he asks more clueless than he is to be relational and probably just a strategy he learned a long time ago. I watched the Netflix doc and am not 100% convinced. This is all gut instinct impression. How interesting that she asked the chopped p question and his last prosecution was THAT story? My IQ was 130 as a kid and 125 in perimenopause (ha) and I’m the kinda person that usually gets the “answer” right but often can’t explain how I know. Haha Good for them for not posting their scores but was hoping they were gonna! Will read his book.

Whenever she pipes in with her tone deaf comments it interrupts the flow of the show and makes me almost want to not bother listening at all.
