Looking at this again, I just realized another bit of magic Matt pulled off, in this video. Not only did he manage to capture a Crusin’ retrospective that predates the announcement for a shocking Switch port coming out in less than a week. But, between his mention of Crusin’ Blast and the GBA section of this video, he managed to include the every game that would get a shocking Switch remake or a sequel, this year, during E3. Fusion is in this video, along with Advance Wars. Over 3 years ago.

The arcade trifecta for me: Cruzin, Daytona USA, and Rush. Any game made you feel like a god damn hero if you got first and won a free game. I got one on a Fast and Furious cabinet and had to leave because the movie I was going to see was starting. There was a kid watching me and as I got up I said "All yours" and he looked at me like I was a god. I really miss stuff like that.

Crusin’ Blast is coming to the Switch this Fall.
@MikePelensky3 жыл бұрын
Excellent look back, Matt! I tried to figure out for ages why I loved the Cruis’n series so much... and ultimately it comes down to the reckless, gleeful energy of the series. The constantly shifting set pieces and fifty foot drops from Cruis’n World to Blast make these games, cheesy as they are, feel like well scripted Disneyland rides, which is a type of experience that’s been missing from consoles for ages. I don’t care what the gaming press says- just because you put cute drift mechanics in a racing sim doesn’t make it ‘arcade’! I agree wholeheartedly that Cruis’n Blast ought to land on the Switch, assuming Raw Thrills oversees the port. The driving in that entry is the series’ best. My only critique of the video is that I wish you’d grabbed some footage of the arcade version of Cruis’n Exotica and done a bit of compare and contrast. It looks, sounds, and feels better (and a tad smarter) than the rushed N64 version. I wish Midway had waited to do it justice on GameCube, but man, that company loved cutting off limbs they didn’t care about.

I was first introduced to this series in the late 90's. My family used to take a ferry to Nova Scotia and the ship had an arcade in the middle of it that had this awesome seat set-up and multi-linked systems, allowing two players to race each other. I only got to play it a few times but damn, it sunk it's hooks into me. Got it later on the N64 but it just wasn't the same D:

Hearing the theme after popping in a quarter is pure nostalgia for me. I remember trying to play the Mars track first, and failing miserably. Maybe not a retrospective because it had 2 games, but Wave Race was special to me as a kid who's parents bought an n64, but 3 games for it. For a simple concept it had a lot going for it with the maps design and trick system it should warrant a video of some sort since not many people know about it. Also 1 of those 3 games was Cruisin World. Such a beast game, loved the russian map!

As crummy a port as it is, I get a lot of fun out of the Wii one, and I do think it earned the title of Cruis’n since it was exactly like the previous games aside from the name. I wish it had been a better port though. A bar I go to had a Fast & Furious cabinet which I like to occasionally play, but I still play the Wii one at home.

For some reason, I was expecting to see the game California Speed show up somewhere in here. I played it as a kid and always assumed it was made by the same people. But according to Wikipedia, though Midway published it, it was actually developed by Atari. Still, I have to imagine that Atari was trying to make a very similar style of racing game. Says a lot about the Cruisin' series that they all had a certain "feel" to them, like Outrun on steroids.
