Poor Bi-Han. Even when he tried to do good he still got screwed. I played this when it first came out, and while the controls and such were indeed horrible, the overall experience was amazing at the time - and actually still is. If nothing else, the FMVs, while corny, were incredibly fun and made the grind worth it just to see the next cutscene and see the actors add to the story and struggles of Bi-Han, and give us probably the best look we ever had into the MK universe - even to this day, I dare say. Let's be honest. Would you watch another MK movie disaster, or all the FMVs from Mythologies all over again? Don't get me wrong, the FIRST MK movies wasn't that bad, but in terms of depth, story and overall atmosphere, Mythologies pretty much nailed it.
@Itosalix
@Itosalix 2 жыл бұрын
You mean the first MK movie. The sequel was a travesty on humanity. I don't entirely blame them, it was just poorly planned and they didn't know how crew promotions should work. The needed more experience in behind-the-scenes. The TV series. Let's not go there. Legacy the web series actual had real promise. The execs that shot it down did not know what they had. The latest movie... decent but lacking substance. It just felt like a diluted MK movie. Good enough for a lazy movie night to shut your brain off. This game? Bad rental choice.

As a diehard Scorpion player since MK1, I wish we could’ve gotten a Scorpion game but I suppose he’s gotten a lot more screen time in recent MK’s, the online web series; and the latest movie (I didn’t really care for his descendent as he had literally plot armor as a power).

I honestly always thought it was a weird choice from them to even make the game. A MK game with exactly one playable character, but still plays(mostly) like a MK game, but with direction-switching on a button...so like a beat-em-up, but also NOT, because it's also a platformer...it really felt like the kind of project that results from directionless development.

It’s really interesting how there’s not really a major story here. Midway greenlit an MK spin-off, the team worked within a tight deadline but by all accounts it went about as they expected to. There’s no big drama or fallout, a developer didn’t go defunct, the guys worked on this then got back to working on arcade games. Kinda remarkable, really.

I have actual nostalgia for this. Because when I got my first PS1 as an X-mas gift in 1997, The first 3 games I got for it were The "Greatest Hits" version of Tekken 1, Hasbro's Frogger, and MK: Mythologies: Sub-Zero. As somebody who's actually played this game after Ultimate MK3 for Super Nintendo, the combo mechanics felt 2nd nature to me to a certain degree. Shockingly, MK9 and even MKX made small call-backs/shout-outs to this game whenever they mention Bi-Han's past and the significant role he played in stopping Shinnok.
@sebazpereyra9431

I got kinda annoyed when in MK11's storymode Fujin tells Bi-Han he ran away from their fight. Noob Saibot should've been like "Bitch, please! I beat you so hard your only option left was creating a tornado so powerful it would kill you too. You did, died, and still failed to kill me!" I remember how frustrating that fight was untilI figured out what to do, don't take it away from me!

I think if they took some of the good idea's of this and mashed them with some mechanics from Beat 'em Ups it could work as a really good tutorial for people who find Fighting Games difficult to get into. Beat up the weak enemies to both feel strong and learn mechanics (jump in, mix up, anti-air, etc.), then have a boss at the end of level testing those mechanics.

Anyway, he looked at my very confused. And no wonder, because it wasn’t a movie. It was a video game. I loved this game as a kid, and still have super fond memories looking back. I think the environment and character designs still hold up, as evidenced by Quan Chi's continued relevance. I wish we got more "prisonworld" Netherrealm in other MKs, as I thought that was a super fun design. Can barely play it now, but if this was back in the day and it was still the only non-Genesis MK game I owned, I'd be grinding away at it trying to find keys and make terrible jumps.

I was actually discussing this game with a friend of mine just two weeks ago. For a lot of what it did wrong, it also did a lot of right things, such as art design, and it pulled off something incredibly difficult, even for its time: It varied in scenarios wildly without losing its coherence. You start in a monastery, go through sewers, travel to another reality with judge-dredd soldiers and it still feels as if it's the same 'universe'. The combat in it was clunky, yes, but you were able to beat damn dinosaurs with missiles! Something only see with Turok! So its... well, cheesy, clunky, awful on the edges and frustrating, but not as bad as a lot of people thought to be.

Honestly, this story would be an interesting one to remake, but make it a story of a down fall, the tragedy of Bi Han and the lose of the Lin Kuei's honer. Have him see and be part of the in fighting and disagreements within the Lin Kuei. See him talk and discuss life and plans with Cyrax and Sektor. See him help train and joke around with Smoke and Kuai Liang. See him lose himself and fall to his darker ways, becoming Noob well before Honzo did the deed in MK1/9. I think this would be very good. We can even throw in Baby Frost and someone saying "What great potential, she has".
@sebazpereyra9431

NRS can be frustrating with their storytelling sometimes. Bi-Han's story was meat to be a tragedy, Raiden's words get to him, and goes from brutally murdering Scorpion, to sparing Sareena, growing as a character, and it tied with his MK1 ending where he would retire from the Lin Kuei, he just didn't have enough time to redeem his soul before dying, so he ended up becoming Noob Saibot, serving the same evil he wanted not to be. Then MK9 came and made him not learn anything from MKM and ruined the whole thing.

I played this games for hours and have mixed feelings of love/hate. The music of the first four temples was so appealing to me, because the sound was a mixture of percussion and tribal music influence of oriental culture, very contemporary for the time, I wish MK would implement sounds like these in their games since it fits percetly. Fun fact: once, I played this game for so much that distortion my sight and started to see other people skin in pink, but only the skin. Luckily, it was just that time.

I still have this on the N64. My brother loved it when he was younger, yet little babby me was scared shitless by it. Mainly Sub-Zero, cuz I kept having nightmares of him trying to kill me. WHICH IS IRONIC BECAUSE HE'S MY FAVOURITE FIGHTER THESE DAYS.

@@schemar17 I disagree, because the second game was Special Forces and at that time there were decent 3D Beat 'Em Ups. This is more of Midway finally finding their sweet spot when it came to Shaolin Monks, and it helps that it came during the later era of PS2 so they could see what others made. The Tech simply made it easier. As for a remake that would be nice, but with how MK games work now there really isn't much of a need.

@@garretdrake2347 Fair enough. I guess what I was getting at was that of all the characters available, it kind of was strange that they made a game focused on exactly one of them, with no one else playable. I suppose it could've been anyone and still someone like me would've thought "why THAT character?"

You know, it's really important to note that a poorly-received game can sell incredibly well due to various factors. Between hype, a trusted publisher, a well-loved series, even bad games can sell millions of copies very quickly. Sales are not indicative of quality; the fact that this game only had 14 total months of development time on top of a team of seven developers that... really had very little prior experience with this particular style of game says a lot about the quality of the game. What impresses me more is just how much effort they tried to put in, and how much love they had for what they were doing at the time. They were having fun, and it shows in their product, even if it wasn't the best game.
