Sisyphus is a weird choice, but the fact that he's a dung beetle (which roll balls of poop) and is named after a Greek figure who was sentenced to push a boulder for eternity, is hilarious.

There should have been an eagle named Prometheus too. Every name they used could of been an Italian Renaissance painter, or from Greek and japanese mythology. Would of been tight!

Yeah, as soon as I head of Sisyphus, I wanted him to show up in at least one of the cartoons as a Turtle Pal. Also, there's apparently a Sisyphus beetle in real life, so double reference! It'd probably be a bit of an ask, but it would be cool if an edition of TMNTXJL would have updated sprites of the non SNES characters. Just to have them all in one place.

I love how this game mashed up the different iterations of TMNT and used some lesser-known Archie and Mirage characters. Karai was a virtual unknown to most fans in 93, and it wasn't until the 2003 series and onwards she became a regular fixture. Thanks for the great retrospective!

1992’s “The Art of Fighting” had a “spirit gauge”, which would do a number of things once full such as making fireballs stronger, but you could also spend some of the sprit gauge to use a super move. So that would be the first fighting game with a super meter.

Those are more like Desperation Moves like the ones in Fatal Fury. Yes, AOF has a meter but is used for every special move and you need to charge it manually, doesn't fill with your attacks like a modern meter is. I believe that TMNT is the one that premiered the traditional Super Meter.

@@opiumized Yes but I'd argue that one doesn't quite count. It's not a resource meter per se, as you cannot consume it using any moves. It just alerts you when your character "enrages" so to speak and is purely timer based in terms of consumption. SS2 had super moves that consumed that meter, however it came out in 1994.
@ultimateman55
@ultimateman55 Жыл бұрын
I don't think AoF's meter counts, as it's fundamentally a different type of meter. It's meter was for special moves, not super moves or even enhanced specials. It also refilled differently, as it started out full each round and would rebuild based on time alone, not by building it up using attacks or by taking damage.

I know the Genesis one is considered the worst, but it captured my imagination with it's unusually dark tone, sometimes haunting music and stage art, and the fact that a normal, human martial artist was more powerful than Krang's android body or a Triceraton warrior. That was just so cool to me! It also blows my mind that these games may have invented stage transitions and instant replays in fighters. And hey, since the Cowabunga Collection is hitting every platform this year, I'll finally get to play all of 'em :D

After seeing the reveal trailer for the “Cowabunga Collection” that video brought me here. Well done Matt! I played the living hell out of the Genesis version as a child but later on would experience the SNES version. Much later though, I wound up paying a pretty penny for a copy of the NES version that I found at a retro game store in NYC & it was best $200 I ever spent for a complete copy as rare as it is. As a fighting game enthusiast, I spent a lot of time with each version analyzing the differences and what were the best strategies for winning matches (& believe me it varies as you know). I just find each version so fascinating not just because they are fighting games but just the fact that they are really the only games that are “ports” for multiple consoles but they don’t even feel like it, they feel like their own games with their own merits. Even each game has their own storylines (albeit short and simple ones none the less). With this all said, I stand hopeful that the “Cowabunga Collection” may make small alterations for these games (like make the bosses playable or simple tutorials for newer players for example). I’m probably asking too much for an HD collection of 11 games though lol! Ultimately though, I want a remake of Tournament Fighters done by today’s fighting game standards though. That would be a sight to see! Maybe combining all the best elements of all 3 Versions of the game’s storylines would make it a nice touch. I really see, only 3 companies taking this on, Nearherrealm (whole have already included the Turtles as DLC in Injustice 2 so I feel like there is a leg up there), Namco/Bandai or Capcom as long as their is a focused and devoted team of developers who are willing to take the old and mix it with the new. Who knows though, we will only wait and see what the future holds. :)

Even though i put more time into the genesis version, the time i spent with the snes version was just more fun in general. Not just because of the aesthetics but also because the gameplay felt much more satisfying since "combos" don't really exist in the genesis version.

I really enjoyed this video. I loved the Mega Drive version, but it was just a weekend rental with some friends back in the day. I'm shocked there were two other version and I never heard about them.

I have a vague memory of this game. I remember seeing it being played at someone's house when I was a little kid and I remember the shark character a bit, but I never got a chance to pick up and play it. Might have to find a SNES and track down the game.

i really like the NES tournament fighters, it's not like a traditional fighting game at all, it's a simple fighter but very addicting

I’m not saying this is a 10/10 game, but it’s crazy how many people dismiss it as “just some cheap Street Fighter clone”. This game is awesome, way better than it’s reputation. An underrated gem for sure.

Tournamnet Fighters on the SNES was legendary. I remembr playing this game before I knew how to read so I didnt know what was going on, BUT IT DIDINT MATTER. The thing I love about this game is how serious this game was. They're not smiling and fighting, they were tough. The fights were serious, as a fighting game should be. The music was beautiful. In fact Imma look up the ost right now!

The time is so ripe to bring this game back into the spot light with a modern update. Power Rangers BftG has freaking Street Fighter characters crossing over into it, the nostalgia hype is REAL.

Wow, I feel kinda shortchanged having only gotten to play the Sega version as an 8 year old. Those stage transitions looked dope though, I don't even remember seeing that happen. Though I'm glad to hear that my doing so poorly in it really was because it just had really weird design choices, lol. Also, that MUGEN mashup looks amazing, I'm totally going to get my friends in on it.

I had the SNES version as a kid. I was bummed out because i thought it would be like turtles in time instead of a fighting game. Still had some great times with this game playing with my friends and drawing the instrunction booklet art, never could beat Karai though.

This game is so underrated as a fighter game compared to other games of its type being able to do each character’s finishing move by just pressing 2 buttons unlike mortal kombat with their hard to do fatalities was what really made me love this game plus the gameplay was really good and better than I thought it would be Michael Angelo’s finishing moves was my favorite

If TF had just included Usagi Yojimbo in the SNES version it would have been the complete package. It's still so good though.
