There’s Pandemic, and Pandemic In The Lab, and he mentions he has all the expansions. The first two expansions and the original game all fit in to a single In The Lab box, but I think the third expansion is likely his outlier to needing two boxes. But... who knows. Pointless detail in the end. I’d love these guys to do a review of Spirit Island and an expansion to get their thoughts. Coop got me in to board gaming, and appreciate their thoughts if they had a keen interest in Pandemic as well over the years.

@M A Speaking as a native British English speaker, I've never met anyone who says it as in "fife".
@adastra5534 жыл бұрын
I figured it might have been a regional variation, but both Oxford and Cambridge English Dictionaries give it as /fiːf/ “feef”, not /faɪf/ “fife”, in BrE Fief actually has a really neat etymology: not only did French descend it from (a variation of) Lt _feudum,_ but Latin borrowed the word from French! Frankish _*fehu,_ meaning “livestock”, gave Old French _feu,_ which was borrowed into Latin as _feum_ or _*feuum_ > _fevum,_ which in turn descended back into Old French as _fief,_ devoicing the /v/ to /f/ and diphthongising /ε/ into /jε/ (which is how it’s still pronounced in French) The “d” in standard Lt _feudum_ (whence English “feudal”, but not English “feud”, which is related to the word “foe”) comes from the Frankish word _*ôd_ (whence also the “od” in “allodial”; there was probably a Frankish word _*fehu-ôd_ that influenced it), meaning “goods, possessions, livestock”, from Proto-Germanic _*audaz,_ whence Old English _ēad,_ which is the “Ed” in names like “Edward” and “Edgar” To complete the etymology, Frankish _*fehu_ is from Proto-Germanic _*fehu_ “livestock, property” (whence Old English _feoh_ “money” and, influenced by French _fief,_ Modern English “fee”), which is in turn from PIE _*péku_ (that “k” should be a palatovelar, but I don’t have access to that character rn; it becomes /s/ in satem languages like Sanskrit and /k/ in centum languages like Latin) whence Sanskrit _páśu_ “livestock”, Kurdish _pez_ “sheep”, and Latin _pecū_ “cattle” and _pecūnia_ “money”

That aspirational part really got me. I slowly found and purchased all the expansions for Mansions of Madness 1st edition, mostly because I was in love with the feeling the game gave me. In my group, it isn't usually the first choice for game night, and I really don't always enjoy setting it up when it does hit the table, but it is just one of those games that feels like it has so much potential, and enjoyment, just hiding beneath it's cardboard lid. Whenever I go to grab out Codenames, Betrayal, or even Twilight Imperium for our yearly weekend long extravaganza, I take a moment to pause, and marvel at what it could offer. What dark realms it could bring us to. I smile to myself, give it a pat to remind it the special place it holds in my heart, and close the cabinet doors once again. One day, you beautiful, heavy little box, one day.

Got Quacks recently (on yours and others glowing reviews) and played it with my 9yr old twins and halfway thru the first game we'd got it, after that the game starts to flow and future games can be quite fast paced. Currently playing it nearly every weekend (it's so much fun working on your own potion and no one gets upset that they aren't winning) and after 3 or 4 games on the starting set up weve moving onto the alternative ingredients you get in the box. Also got the expansion to allow grand parents to join in and it gives an extra couple of flavours to add to the base game that already offered 5? versions. A cracking game that every family will love and one that's probably going to get gifted to a few of our friends this year. PLUS the expansion fits nicely into the base game box without confusing anything (although I can't force myself to throw the empty expansion box away....)
