I love Matt’s point about how we are essentially making life increasingly meaningless. I think it’s so true. From a biological standpoint, all of our systems are geared towards ensuring our survival. The less we have to work to survive, the less our systems are engaged and the more depressed we feel.

Hadn't watched the video yet but this does really go with what we know of physiological and psychological homeostasis. When humans truly had to earn their keep and find food for themselves, they'd walk a far distance to get some sweet fruits for example, and our dopamine system drives that desire for survival. We experience pain and discomfort to reach whatever we need to get for survival, this example being fruits, and when we get that dopamine from the fruits it balances out the discomfort that we put ourselves through to get to the fruit brush that may have been across a barren land. There was an experiment with rats wherein they were bioengineered to be without a functioning dopamine system and they would not seek out food even if they were hungry. When food was placed in front of these rats, they would not even get up to reach the foods to feed themselves and chose to starve themselves instead. That's all to say our dopamine system is very important to us and how we function, it's original purpose being geared towards survival. Now we're so well-cared for that we're seeking dopamine in other ways. In a civilization where we can get a firehose of dopamine from entertainment, food, addictions, and validation, and most of us don't have the discipline to turn away from the unhealthily abundant dosages of dopamine because it's just a part of living to seek it out. Thanks for coming to my rant

@@vanessaphanouvong5870fascinating. I think about this kind of thing a lot. We did not evolve for this modern world yet here we are. Almost nothing of our lives is natural… we sit constantly. In artificial lighting. In climate controlled vehicles. Traveling at high speeds on concrete to sit in front of a screen every day, and we do that enough times, some numbers appear on another screen to signify that we have earned money… which we use to buy fake food dyed with orange #276 lol. Not once do we have to hunt or forage or avoid predators, or even so much as wake up with sunlight. It’s all very weird, really, when you think about it. Can’t expect it to be without consequences.

Maybe this is why I’ve been watching Amish documentaries lately. Fascinated by their culture of meaning. They really need each other because it’s important for their survival. We on the other hand can survive with our modern technology on our own. Culture of independence.

Antinatalism is the ethical position that views the birth of sentient beings as morally wrong. The justifications are: harm/suffering prevention, the questionable nature of gambling with another life, & the impossibility of consent to be born. - No one has the moral right to inflict serious, preventable harms upon others without their consent. Existence brings preventable, guaranteed harm & is imposed without consent. Because a child cannot consent to being born, the default should be to assume that consent doesn’t exist and that no action should be taken on the child’s behalf. Just like how it’s not okay to r@pe an unconscious person just because they can’t consent to or refuse to participate in the act. - Everyone experiences at least some suffering, and some people experience disproportionately more suffering than others. Creating a life is inherently unfair & inconsiderate. - Everyone has the rights to eternal peace & the freedom from all harm, both of which can only result from never coming into existence. Therefore, every human being has the right to NOT be born so long as they can’t waive their rights by providing informed consent to being born. Procreation is the biggest violation of a being’s autonomy there is. - An opinion being “negative” doesn’t make it untrue. On the contrary, it’s realistic as suffering is inevitable, & it’s impossible for someone to consent to life. - Procreation is simply not anyone’s risk to take because they won’t be the ones suffering any negative consequences of their decision to procreate-their children will. - By procreating, you are intentionally harming your “loved ones” for your own selfish desires to attain a sense of control, purpose, fulfillment, pride, achievement, or superior social status. - There’s no reason to create a child that’s for the child’s sake. For a potential child, birth doesn’t solve any problem that it doesn’t first create. All positives in life, such as love, happiness, or good food are based on fulfilling needs, which get created by birth. Creating a life is creating a host of needs for no need. - A nonexistent “person” cannot miss out on anything good since they don’t exist & the nonexistent have no needs or desires, including the desire for life itself or any of its pleasures. - For the betterment of humans, the environment, & other sentient beings, humans need to go extinct. No one is being harmed by the extinction of humans since no one will exist to experience said harm. Who will care that humanity is ending if no one is around to care? - On the point directly above: Just because an outcome may be unwanted doesn't mean that the arguments are wrong. Even if you believe extinction is inherently bad, this does not justify the undeniable truth that reproduction violates the child’s consent to being born. This is an appeal to consequences, a logical fallacy. - Just because procreation is natural & societally accepted doesn’t mean it’s morally good. Diseases, natural disasters, & famine are all natural too, but that doesn’t mean they’re good. This is an appeal to nature, a logical fallacy. Slavery has been around for over 13,000 years. That doesn’t make it moral or ethical. - None of the nonexistent can wish to be born, but plenty of the living wish they had never existed.

Regarding the conversation at the 1 hour point about people claiming they wish they weren’t parents. How many of them are deeply influenced by social media? Do they simply regret the circumstances under which they had their children? Is it that they have a fantasy self in their imagination that would have been able to travel and have a dream job and a vibrant social life without children? Is it that they are overthinking parenting to the point where they are always anxious and stressed rather than seeing the joy in it?

Matt is 1000% correct about porn. We are simply whistling oast the graveyard on one of the biggest issues facing society and specifically men. Its just unnatural to have access to that much porn and the variety is what makes it even more dangerous. We used to just have a magazine. Now its different random niche kinks which you only tend to find online.

@@dib327 I'm really getting frustrated with this podcast. It went from educational content on finance to platforming some of the most dangerous hate mongers in America. Matt Walsh is a horrible human being who has built his whole career on trying his damndest to make sure non-Christians and various social/ethnic/sexual minorities are beaten into the ground. I really wish we would just get back to finance stuff or at least stuff that is tangential to what the show was started for.

I was a selfish 35 y.o. woman. I got married and became (unexpectedly) pregnant right away. I was VERY unhappy bc I didn't want any children! But, having children was the cure for my selfishness. It took about a year, but my loyalty, concern, care, and focus shifted from me to my daughter. I guess you could say I was open to it, but the reality was that she NEEDED me, demanded my attention, and I could not withhold it. I gave, and gave, and slowly forgot to put myself first. She is now a mom herself and a really terrific one, too! I think I played a part in her success as a mom❤

Matt's comments about parenting around 34:00-36:10 are great. My parents -- my dad especially -- had a terrible anger problem growing up, and as an adult, I for a long time tried bringing it up with them, hoping they'd understand what they'd done and how much it had affected my childhood. They'd say they were sorry, they didn't know any better, they thought what they'd done was necessary to raise a good kid (because of the 'spare the rod' mentality they'd been raised with themselves), but the thing they never understood, no matter how many times I tried to explain it, was that the problem wasn't the 'punishment' itself, it's that it wasn't ever really punishment, it was just an excuse for them to let out their anger on me. They're trying to apologize for innocently not knowing the optimal way to raise a child, as if their only mistake was not reading enough parenting books or something. But you don't need studies on parenting to figure out that getting drunk, angry, and hitting your kid with a belt is not levelheaded punishment done in the (perceived) best interests of your children. They'll never get it or acknowledge it. I stopped trying to explain it years ago and it was just fueling resentment. We have a good relationship in the present, and both have worked through their anger issues quite a bit, as have I. Nothing to do now but make sure I do better with my own kids someday.

@@Smartskull0 The entire basis of antinatalism stems from the idea of equality being a virtue, that it would be better if all were equally destitute than if only some were destitute, no matter the actions or circumstances an individual is in. It's therefore deemed "unethical" for someone to be born in a position to where they wish they weren't born. This is preposterous, as it ignores human agency. A life of luxury is not owed to anybody, as said life of luxury and free of any strife would require struggle from others. There's also the issue of defining "struggle." Some people view working as a struggle and detest it, and as such don't achieve much. Others love their work, and as such achieve a lot. There are people in objectively great positions who wish they were never born, and there are people in objectively awful positions who are overflowing in gratitude towards the gift of life. People, in having free will, are the deciding factor in loving life or not. Although some material possessions may have influence, the decision is up to each and every individual. Human life is inherently valuable. If you don't believe that, you are mentally unwell, and should seek help. Above everything else, consent is NOT the end-all be-all of morality. Not even close. Two people can consent to dueling each other to the death with forks while covered in feces. It doesn't make what they're doing moral. Those are the main problems, I don't have the time that you have to write stuff on youtube. I sincerely hope you don't believe that nonsense, but if you do I wish you a speedy recovery and will send prayers your way

I’m going to make two very straightforward points. First, technology since the mid to late 1990s has been negative for culture and negative for society. I was a child of the 70s and went to high school & college in the 80s and I’m from the deep south and even here there was little to no racism and most of the racism I saw most of the bigotry and prejudice I saw was when I traveled around to places like New York and California. We were a much better society in the 1980s than today. My two best friends in college were black and they’re like brothers to me today and they would agree with me. At that point we had reached a point where technology Was doing great things, but cable TV and the Internet had not yet exploded and led to the negatives that we have today. People like Lex Friedman and Graham that love technology and want more technology, they see the future as this Star Trek utopia where thanks to technology everyone can go off and be a philosopher or an artist. The only problem with that is only half of the population have an above average IQ. And average IQ actually isn’t very high. That type of world will be great for 20% of the population. Maybe 30%. For everyone else it’s going to be a disaster. Not only that, we’re pretty much always going to need ditch diggers and people that do a certain level of menial and/or manual labor. Even on Star Trek there were moons and planets where people were doing manual labor. People that worked in mines, etc. By the way, talking about raising children, safety, etc. America is far safer today than the 60s and the 70s. Kidnappings and children disappearing people disappearing used to be far more common than today. Despite the population being twice as big and despite having three or four times as many guns, violent crime is down significantly from 40 or 50 years ago. Actually until the last few years because of Covid and bat shit policies from Democrats we’re seeing violent crime spike in big cities, but until a few years ago violent crime across America had been steadily declining for 40 years.
