Well said, gentlemen! People need to hear the truth even though it may hurt.

This conversation is why I gravitated to strongman athletes. They seemed like they have some of the best longevity and have the most fun with the training.

The long term, patient approach allows you to continue enjoying the benefits of training and competition. The appeal of a faster progression is there, but I’m thankful for the positive impact getting strong and demonstrating it still has in my life

The low hanging fruit is just getting in the gym consistently and reaping the rewards of solid training and diet. That is the boring shit that will give people 80% of the results. The other 20% comes with little tweaks and plateau breaking. I think if the fitness influencers don't acknowledge that a year in the gym can seriously transform someone's physique it may seem like a barrier to entry if someone was to say you can't get to x result without 10 or 15 years in, so there's a balance there that should be brought up. I like where the narrative is going with this no bullshit honesty because it will keep the younger generations better grounded and definitely safer than some of the shit that's being glorified these days (trentwins bs etc). Keep it up guys. This was a good one.

If powerlifting in regards to competition wants to be more legit and encourage more patience I think it should adopt competitive cycling’s approach. It’s set up how Dave said powerlifting use to be set up. When you start doing races no matter how good you are you start at level Cat 5 (the lowest). Only through your placings in races are you then moved up to cat 5, cat 4, cat 3, etc. You can also appeal to the organization to be moved up but only through your past placings and they never move you up more than one category at a time.

Crazy how the generation you're part of is always the best and the new guys are never as good. A take as old as time... Getting old happens to everyone and this is the result.

Well Larry Wheels set basically every record and talked about being on gear as a teenager. He’s done a lot to discourage people from following his path.
@LatimusChadimus

Imagine the potential chance of him being even further ahead if he allowed himself to chase his genetic potential and waiting until his mid-to-late twenties to get that boost
@matthewross8065

He’s still the best of his generation by a mile. He created a very lucrative living lifting weights. Who’s to say at 23 he doesn’t become a banker and never lift again. He’s 27 and per recommendations he’d have still not take gear? Come on. To each their own, but Larry wheels is a poor example as his whole life and living is based on the progress he gained from pushing the needle so hard so early. For ever Larry wheels there are 1000 kids at 19 eating trenbologna sandwiches that are killing themselves for no financial gain.

Again. Saying Larry wheels “blew his wad” because he retired at 26, he could still go out and compete top tier in 10 weeks anytime he wanted.

Everyone talks crap 💩 about O’Hearn but facts are facts 1) comes from a family of lifters 2) was naturally very well built from the beginning. 3) has always been athletic and genetically At a high level 4) no amount of drugs or training is going to help without, proper diet,proper recovery,proper training. Natty or not he didn’t get where is, without straight dedication.
@LatimusChadimus

Yeah lots of athletes and doctors have said that you can take whatever you want but you're not going to get anything out of it if you just sit around absorbing these chemicals instead of getting out there. Of course build your base and wait until you've maxed out your genetic potential hopefully in your mid-to-late twenties but as for the rest of us, I know personally I do not want to be dependent on anything so I don't take anything other than vitamin K2 D3 supplements and electrolyte supplements like CaMgZn & potassium

To Matt’s question, Larry Wheels retired from PL’ing in his 20s because he doesn’t need to do it any longer. The kid ‘made it’ before his 30th and is set up for life. If it’s not his passion, why persist?
