I spent a couple of weekends replacing the lamps/bulbs and cleaning the pots on a Sansui 5050 vintage stereo receiver. We also reformed and refinished a set of Advent Legacy Tower speakers then installed the system in my friend's house. It's been about 10 years since I worked on stereo stuff and it feels good to get back into it. The aesthetic is my favorite.

This channel reminds me of Evan Monsma's channel. Informative, yet there is a story to go along with. Not just the dry "how to" format video or whatnot. I really liked the video and I hope this channel continues to grow!

Aww that is very kind of you! I hadn't heard of him before but he has great videos! I'm definitely trying to make each video have somewhat of a story even if its just a basic how to that is the topic. Thanks for stopping by! -Matt

With the old receivers. They do have a protection switch but they are built into the circle boards and they are the thin copper strips they place on the PCB boards! That’s why they were so easy to replace compared to this day and age when they decided to get too damn technical with the understanding of improving sound quality when it’s all digitally simulated🧐

Yes indeed! Older stuff is definitely easier to work on with how large the components are.

Thanks for stopping by! Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to learn much about reel to reels but its on the list. At first I would say belts, but it could be a faulty switch or maybe the switch just needs to be cleaned. Belts and cleaning the heads is usually a good place to start on an old RTR. Cheers! -Matt

Thanks for the video. Keep them coming . Very entertaining being a vintage gear head lover myself. On that system I would have had a 4 song trial. So what- miles Davis, Samba pa ti - Santana, subdivisions- rush, and lastly , shakedown street- the grateful dead, I use these songs quite frequently to get a feel for sweet spots in a room for speaker placement, when it's right it's ASTOUNDING. again thanks. Liked and subbed.

I've had a love of all the "vintage" audio gear since the eighties, but since I opened my record store back in 2019, my passion is in overdrive. I buy, refurbish, and resell turntables, receivers and speakers, but the most satisfying thing, is when I put together a complete system and offer it for sale as a whole. It's so cool to see an entire system go to a new home, knowing the new owner is going to be continuing the legacy of some great gear.

Ahh man, I'm so happy for you. You're living the dream! I'd sure love to get a storefront going! Maybe in the next few years...Making a complete system that's a good value for someone is so rewarding! Especially if its their first system. Thanks for stopping in and telling your story, I really appreciate it ❤️

Great video! It's fun to see you so excited about vintage audio and finding a way to enjoy music and equipment with friends. It's not a favorite song necessarily, but it came to my mind when you asked what song we'd listen to if we set up a new system and the song is He Made Us All Blind by Creeper Lagoon.

I just refinished some Advent prodigy II speakers. the tops were pretty scratched up. sanding them down was easy. I noticed they were pecan wood, so i bought some pecan stain. what a mistake. they looked like cheap 2 x 4 wood with that stain, zero color. i then put on some minwax oil based espresso color. wow. now they look beautiful. did 3 coats of oil based polyurethane sanding lighly between coats. for the last finish coat, after the poly cured for a few days i took 1000 grit wet sandpaper and wiped it lightly across the wood to get off dust nibs. came out great. look like new.

I love that they're solid pecan! So easy for refinishing. I bet yours look killer with the stain and poly! Thanks for watching!

Pretty much non of it is original sound without some kind of digital enhancements to tickle the ear. People just don’t know how sound can mess up Human individuals. Depending on the person auditory systems of sound and frequency most are not use to! For example we have people who can’t stand loud finger nails across a chalkboard and some other surfaces that makes a sound that some people are highly sensitive to and it drives them nuts.i used to be like that until I trained myself to block those high pitched frequencies

I have thought about working on other peoples stuff but it just depends on what you have and what it needs. I’m not likely to be the cheapest option. I saw your DM on IG and replied

My older brother bought a new pair of Advent Legacy towers when that model was still current. As the broke younger brother, I was so jealous of them at the time. In adulthood, I've graduated to a Martin Logan electrostatic setup, which I'm very happy with. But, like you, I find hi-fi gear endlessly fascinating and inspiring, whether it's vintage, budget, or high end.

Ohhh I love that you've stayed into it and have that curiosity about it. I feel like it's easy to ignore lower end or budget stuff when you've got a really high end setup. How long have you had the Martin Logans? I've heard good things!

@@Shuksanaudio I've had my Martin Logans for about 12-13 years now, and they always provide listening joy. The first time a heard a pair of electrostatics in person, in the high-end room of a local audio store, I was hooked, but I never thought I'd be able to afford them. Most of the cliches one hears about electrostatics are true, at least in my experience: they sound extremely "fast" and transparent, with lots of air and openness in the presentation, yet they don't sound bright or overemphasized in the highs. Rather, they sound natural and very revealing. On the downside, they can be very picky about placement if you want the best out of them, and they can be bass shy. But one can tackle those challenges by tweaking their position over time and using a good, carefully adjusted sub (or two). I have yet to hear speakers that sound closer to being in the same room with the musicians.
