Great video! As a teenager, I spent endless hours staring at the Tamiya buggies at my local hobby shop, and dreaming about owning one. this rc was my dream build..... in my early teens in the PH, I used to read and drool on the colorful pics about this in Tamiya magazines..... one day I've sent a letter to the USA to my folks with cut out pics of this so that I could hopefully get this specific kind, but instead they bought and sent me the Nikko brand 1:24 scale rc..... I still have it and I also got my dream build and i'm in my 40's now.

I share the same story as many others here. I got mine for Christmas in 1985 or 1986. The hours of fun I had with it back in the days, driving on snow and ice, those studded tyres worked perfectly. How I would have wished to be able to shoot a video like this back then, to see from the drivers perspective. One of these days I'll resurrect mine. Need a new battery and probably a new speed controller as well.

My friend and I are getting back into the hobby after years away. Although we have other half made, old projects and missing wheels on other cars, we decided to start again from scratch with the Hornet. We ran them together today on hard packed snow and grit. Despite the rear wheel weirdness (where the suspension doesn't function under acceleration) and the exagerrated bounce, and the perhaps over-powered nature of the car, we both came away with a huge smile - and agreed that THIS was why we started again.... Your video contributed to our purchases. Thanks, man. From Sweden.

Somehow, the Hornet and Grasshopper buggies just seem to get better with age. I remember feeling a little underwhelmed when they were first released in the 1980's. They just didn't seem to be as interesting as their predecessors, the scale realistic buggies such as the Holiday Buggy, Sand Rover, Rough Rider and Sand Scorcher. Nowadays, there are so many polycarbonate bodied buggies available that these seem to have acquired a certain charm.

Cool video! Cool location! Cool Car! That Hornet seems to ride MUCH better than I remember them in the 1980s! My neighbour's son had one, it was very pitchy and poorly sprung, it drove and rode terribly. Also Tamiya metal gears would fail on them. He brought it to me and I repaired and modified it for him. I had a Sandscorcher (by that time unused), and was inspired to build a Wild One (it looked more scale/scaler) added bearing races etc, ran it in, set it up nicely etc, not as fast as a Fox, but I won a few races even with a standard motor. Happier times, happy times.

I have got two RC's. Both are Tamiyas! I love them, the best part about it is seeing your creation come to life, and if anything goes wrong it's mostly a simple fix, you know what to do with it. Whereas with RTR RC's If something goes wrong you are taking it apart for the first time. Just ordered a tamiya Grasshopper to add to my collection, my collection will soon be: D90 CC01, Super Hotshot and the new Grasshopper! This video inspired me to get a grasshopper. Great video as always! I wonder if "Anytime Baby" means how much the rear suspension stops working when you hit the throttle lol
@ValleyRC4 жыл бұрын
@@DaveyGa Stops the slap but doesn't stop the suspension locking up under throttle. You can remove the shocks entirely and the rear end will still lift up under throttle unfortunately.
@DaveyGa4 жыл бұрын
@@ValleyRC Nope, it DOES stop the shocks locking. My hornet actually squats in the rear under hard acceleration, just like it should. Same with my Lunchy.
@ValleyRC4 жыл бұрын
@@DaveyGa I disagree but whatever you say. Like I said, you can remove the suspension entirely and the rear end will still lift up, it's a simple matter of physics and no brace or fishing line or third shock mod will fix that. The entire gearbox wants to rotate the opposite position to the wheels, if it had a multi link suspension system then this would be absorbed by the links but because the only pivot point is inside the chassis, the gearbox is always going to to rotate and pull the suspension open. Look at the Grasshopper, it doesn't have pivots at all and it still pulls open. It's physically impossible to cure the problem with anti slap mods because all those do is stop the front of the gearbox rising in the slots, it doesn't stop the back of the gearbox going down. I've seen people even add extra weight to the roof of a Grasshopper and put the softest springs available on there but it still locks up under heavy throttle. If you're lucky you might get a little movement on part throttle and on lose dirt but any time there's serious traction and throttle it will lock up, it's simply the nature of the design. Just ask any owner of a Vespa or similar scooter and they will tell you the rear end lifts up during acceleration due to the counter torque. Same problem.
@DaveyGa4 жыл бұрын
@@ValleyRC Have you done it? I have, more than once. It works. Well. I know physics and basic mechanics quite well, thanks. All that's needed is to shift the reactive torque from the shock shafts to something else - hence the tension line. Far from "physically impossible", actually super simple. As I said, my rigid axle cars actually squat under acceleration load with this mod, like any other vehicle does.
@ValleyRC4 жыл бұрын
@@DaveyGa Yes I have. I have done 3rd shocks, fishing line mods, braces, ball pivots. None of them fix the problem. The tension line stops the front of the gearbox slapping up, it does absolutely nothing to change the fact that the gearbox rotates in the opposite direction to the wheels or that the dampers are on the axis of rotation. I really don't know why you think the gearbox pulling on the tension line is going to magically allow the dampers to work. If the suspension could compress then the line would go slack which is obviously not possible. If the line is tight then the gearbox is sill locked in a downwards position and the suspension isn't going to work. Think about what you are saying. Like I said, the Grasshopper has no front pivots at all, it is the ultimate realisation of what all those mods attempt to do and yet it still locks up exactly the same. But please do feel free to provide evidence of your claims.
