In this video, I give you an overview of what I believe to be the most versatile and cost effective router in the market and why I chose it over the likes of Festool, Makita, Dewalt, Triton and Ryobi etc. The Bosch GMF1600 is a thing of beauty.

Why not just drill another hole for the adjuster tool on the front and then flip the router around?

I'm used to larger, corded routers kzbin.infoUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

Thanks for the detailed review. I got this set precisely because I wanted to benefit from the multi use system with the fixed base under a router table. For anyone considering this, please check that you get an insert plate that has exactly matching holes for the bosch base pre-drilled. I got an aluminium one without holes, so I just drilled and tapped them myself. I was 0.4 mm off target in the plate and could not attach all screws.

Matt - *this is by far the best intro to the Bosch GMF 1600 ANYWHERE* (and I speak German too). Thank you so much! I have just ordered one. Everything else I've looked at is a compromise and either doesn't fit in a table, can't use 1/2" bits, doesn't have enough power, has no extraction, ... you get the picture. I'd rather buy once than have to buy twice (and spend even more!) to overcome disadvantages. I've seen guys who have 2, 3 and more routers because they're always getting over a shortcoming. You've shown how this is darn close to a universal router saving money despite great versatility. Basingstoke is an old stamping ground - but now I'm in Switzerland for the last 31 years. Got this beast a couple weeks ago, been absolutely loving it and trying out all the different carbide bits and the shapes they create on my little projects- easily my favourite tool in my Bosch collection and thats saying a lot because I usually hate corded tools.

The flat side is a bit confusing, since you don't need a flat side to run along a straight edge. On a completely round base, the cutter will always maintain the same distance, regardless how you rotate the tool. It could actually get you into trouble, if you don't press with perfectly balanced pressure against the straight edge, the flat side will leverage the tool away from the fence and misalign the cut. The only advantage I could think of to having a flat side would be to fit in tighter spaces. It could act as a tool rest for wrenching off the bit-holding nut, without the tool rolling, but it's on the same side as the cord, so that wouldn't work either, unless you hang the chord over the edge of a table. I put way too much analysis into that.

This review is really well done, Matt. I bought one of these a few years ago here in Canada - yes, also available in the colonies! It really is a great router. I wasn't even aware of all the cool features when I bought it but was pleased to discover the height adjustment feature in the fixed base for example. I still need to buy some of the accessories like the dust extraction. They are not included of course with the basic unit. Agree with you on the responsiveness of the trigger. It's not an issue once you're aware of it. Still, an excellent product and not too expensive either.

I’ve been curious for some time now and had no idea what to get as far as a tool with the most practical features and I find this is a well thought out piece of machinery and not some cheap crap you get tired of fussing with. I like that this Bosch also works well in a table where most of what I would imagine woodworkers go to on a regular basis but then handheld serves its purpose as well. Thanks again. Good review mate. Agree about the screws for the extraction. I really like the delay in the trigger. Keeps it a true soft start. Worth mentioning the micro adjust can be used when the plunge base is locked, which is great for adjusting on the fly. The fixed base has to be unlocked to use the micro adjust though. Great versatile router. Love mine.

WELL DONE!!! Where were you when I was buying my three routers? Quite frankly, this was not available when I got my routers. Two big plunge routers and one small fixed base... Every single drawback you mentioned exists with ALL of my routers. Especially adjusting the router height while in the tables. (I've built two router tables to keep the big routers in but hate them because they require two wrenches to get the bits in and manual lifting to set the height.)

regarding changing cutters, I find with mine, once you have tension on the wrench you don't need to hold the spindle lock, so laying it on it's side, holding the spindle lock, use wrench to get tension then let go ( retaining tension on the wrench ) and then using the handles to brace against means you can put more than enough force to loosen or tighten the collet.

Awesome review as always Matt. I’ve had this router for quite a few years and love it’s features and power. It has to be mounted underneath the table the way you’ve done it otherwise you are feeding into the spinning bit the wrong way (the same direction as it’s spinning).

Thank you for a detailed and clear review! I am a newbie and have a question about the router table mounting. You mentioned 2 options - either have the speed adjust dial facing you (how you have it currently mounted) or the lock mechanism and height adjust dial facing you (what you recommend). Is it possible to have the best of both by turning the base 90 degrees, such that the handle with the trigger is closer to you? Doesn't that provide fairly easy access to all the controls - speed dial on the right, locking mechanism on the left? Thanks again!

would you mind doing a one-year after review ? I own this router for maybe 4 years now, and, while I love the power of the motor, there are few things I hate about it: - plastic for dust extractor all broke after few (light) usage... they are just too thin/brittle for such a big router - the fixed router base give really little space to unlock the nuts, but you're lucky, you have a quick lock, where I have to use two wrench... even harder is such a small space - the fixed router base fine control is almost not working and I have to sustain the motor by hand to remove some weight so the screw is working as normal (and there's no dust in it) - plunge router base have some oil leaking, making it hard to slide up/down and grabbing lots of dust - all the small hand-screws to change the setup (especially on the guide... vibration lossing them off) ...getting me nuts - plunge base felt from the workbench, and the micro-adjust know, full plastic, broke... I know I will be able to get a new one from bosch, but I'm sure it will cost me a hundred :) - I also bought the router table from bosh, and I HATE it. Actually I removed the small legs and made metal brakets and attached it to the side of my workbench (I can provide pictures if you want). I now have more space to unscrew the router bit... And the top is made of aluminum, leaving dark traces on every wood you slide on it... HATE IT ! /stop-ranting Always a pleasure to see some of your old videos. Thanks

I also have it:) .... and I like the fixed base for hands-free copy milling so much that I bought another one ... so one can be permanently built into the table. And you install it in the table with the switch facing you, so everything is at hand - the spindle lock, the speed control and also the fastening clips. Fine-tuning the depth, however, you adjust above anyway ... but you adjust it roughly when inserting the motor.... So nothing is quite "behind" or "away from the hand".

Great video Matt. Very informative. could you possibly follow this up by showing us how to fit the various dust extractors included in the box and explain the different type of applications they are used for. There is also a guide bit adaptor, although l can't find anything online to use with my 30mm inlay kit. Admittedly it's a big beast for inlay work but it is possible. I regard this router as better than my Dewalt, Trend and Makita routers in several ways and it feels better ergonomically. I enjoy watching your videos, keep it up!

Did you have to drill a hole in the base plate to access the rise and fall mech as I can't seem to align mine alongside the 3 holes that have been pre drilled.?

I bought that router a while back. Absolutely love it! I especially love the power being controlled via the trigger button on the handle! On the note of bushings, I ended up getting Bosch's bushing kit. I have had no issues with it. I was on the fence between that and your standard screw on bushings, but read from other people that while doing prolonged routing, the vibrations can unscrew bushings...Not sure if it's true or not, but in either case, I am happy with Bosch's version of just twist and locking it in. Very good in-depth video, Matt! Would love to see more tool videos like this!

I had a bushing screw nut thingy come loose once. It dulled the bit and chewed the hell out of the threads of the lock ring.

Do you have the OF1400? If so, and you use guide bushings, check to see if the bit is centered in the bushing. Mine wasn't but I modified the guide bushing plate and was able to get it centered. I have a poorly made video of what I did. If my OF1400 dies on me I'll be getting the Bosch for sure. One thing the OF1400 really needs but doesn't have is lights, especially for aging eyes.

At the time I needed to upgrade my table router, the GMF 1600 cost > € 700 here in Norway, and it only came with metric collets. For about € 250 I was able to purchase the Triton TRA001 (2400W/3.5 hp) on sale and it included both metric and imperial collets (6,8,12mm, and 1/4,1/2''). Since I've been shopping for routers that accept imperial bits pretty much everywhere here in this backward country, but without luck -- just some big question marks wondering "what is a collet -- I finally figured, Triton is a no-brainer for me. I'm not associated w Gustavsenas.no but these guys are good.

I've got the same router kit and really like it. Once I realized how the switch works it has never bothered me in actual use. As mentioned by other, I really don't care for the flat cut into the router base. It makes following guides more difficult than it needs to be. I love the fence, it's great. The main criticism I have is with the fixed base used in a router table. The guy I bought the router table from set it up the same way you did and I couldn't stand having the adjustment under the fence. I could have remounted it and fixed that if it wasn't for the main issue. When hung upside-down, when you twist the micro-adjust enough, the router body will slip to the next notch in the course adjustment. So your lifting it up and then it will fall back down. I used it for almost a year before I had become feed up enough to buy a router lift table insert. Might have been a problem with the fixed base I got but it was intolerable in a router lift. Otherwise it's an excellent router system and I really do like it a lot.

Hi Bruce. Are you saying that you are using this router with a router lift? If yes, what lift did you go with, and how do you power the router? Is there a separate switch available and does it clear the lift clamps? What about changing bits? Is that difficult with it mounted in a lift? @@TrevorDennis100 Yes, I got a JessEm Mast-R-Lift and couldn't be happier. I have a Kregg router table and it came with a switch. It's mounted on the side of the table. You plug the router into the switch and the switch into the mains. You just lock the power switch on the router to the on position. When you flip the switch on the side of the table the router starts. Changing bits is easy. Just wind the router to highest position in the lift. You do need to get the offset wrenches that Bosch sells. The collet does not come above the surface of the router table. Bosch part no. RA1152. Mounting it in the lift wasn't hard. JessEm provides good instructions with the lift. Hope that helps.

I own 3 - 1617 (fixed and plunge) and didn't know about the dust collection more than the one that comes with the miter set-up which does't do me much good in my uses. For a beginner who is drooling over this router but doesn't have the money to get this. I highly recommend the Bosch POF 1400 ace/ POF 1200 Ace. Alot of the same features like the automatic depth lock. But the only drawback is that doesn't support 1/2" bits. But for me till now it hasn't been an issue yet

Matt, love your channel. I have a question for the dust extraction hoods for this router that is driving me crazy. The router's plastic case has nice spots for the fixed base and plunge base dust extraction hoods. Really convenient. But the dust hood for edge forming doesn't seem to have a spot in the case. Am I being dumb or is this one accessory that needs to be kept outside the case?

Got one of these mounted in my router table. Lasted about 9 month with less than 3 hrs hobby use before the motor gave out. Think inverted in the table, the sawdust drops into the machine too easily through slots in the motor casing around the LEDs, these face upwards when mounted of course. UJK table with full extraction on it, profile cutting soft wood only. Needed a full motor rebuild...….

great router , had mine a few years now , only downside is no motor brake or very slow one and the plastic extraction ports always break after regular use.

I've just about finished table mounting one of these using the Bosch Fixed Base. I absolutely love the router 'for the most part'. I especially like the micrometre height adjustment on the f8ixed and plunge bases which is calibrated in millimetres and appears to have no backlash. What I don't like is that you have to loosen the clamp on the fixed base to adjust the height, and the the clamp is so difficult to undo. So I'd welcome thoughts on this if anyone has made a tool to undo that clamp. I am also thinking the spindle lock button is not that easy to access when the router is table mounted. but I might rig up a solenoid to take care of this. It would not be straight forward as the router have to be in the upper most position for the solenoid to align, but it is doable. I think I measured the force need to push the button at 2lb.

This is the best review of a router that i have ever watched so far! I am in the look for a good router at the moment. You just might have talked me into buying this particular brand and model. Unfortunately, I do not know what is the counter part model of this in the USA. I intend to put it on a router table. That being said, what is the maximum height that I can possibly lift the blade up above the router table, considering the thickness of the aluminum plate or wood plate that i will use to mount the router? Also, being new to routers, what is the use of the brass bushing sets? Hope you can demonstrate a video on what and how to use them. Thank you very much!

Brilliant Matt. I have a Bosch GMF 1600 CE. Why Bosch (a German company) doesn't offer the Bosch RA1181 router table in Europe is beyond me. It would be ideal. Instead I will probably have to spend twice this to get a professional quality non-Bosch router table for my Bosch GMF 1600 CE (MRC EVS 23K) router.

Hi Matt I watched your review of this router and it clinched my selection decision, unfortunately with the Covid pandemic I had to wait several months to take delivery and then the router table I wanted (Rutland) was out of stock. Anyway to cut a long story short I'm in the process of building the the router table and I need to drill the mounting plate to take the router. Can you share any tips on centring the router, marking out the holes and drilling; I've been searching for instructions/videos but with no joy. Keep up the good work :)

About the table router. Am I being thick or you can just fix it with the locks to one side and the speed control to the other??? having a small angle to the fence you can even have the level adjuster near the fence.
