The new season of Game of Thrones is FINALLY here. So I thought I would make myself a wooden goblet to drink from while watching each episode and become one step closer to becoming Jon Snow

Oil finishes feel dry _before_ they become maximally water repellant. I've developed a guideline of leaving it for 'same time again' after the smell has totally gone before using a wood vessel as a water container (for an oil finish). Also, open pore woods like oak, ash etc I tend to give at least two coats before filling with water. This seems excessive compared to the usual finished regime for wood, but the close contact that happens with a vessel is a significant challenge for any finish, compared to shedding water. If you let the finish cure completely, then give it a quick wash (hand wash, just a little dish soap), then dry, it won't taste oily or oaky at all.

I'm very curious to see how that oak holds liquid, especially if it something like wine. I've been thinking of making some wood bowls and cups as well, so please do a follow up! Love the way the goblet came out!

Hey Matt, I love all the vids, and you are doing a great job! Its not turning related, but what type of finish would you recommend to working with curly maple. I want to really bring out the curls in the wood. Thanks, and keep up the great work

LOL @ One step closer to being Jon Snow... You've got the look going on already mate... Just need a wee beard and some armour and Bobs your uncle... One of the great things about being from Belfast is that I got to have sneaky peeks at a lot of the filming - although I still haven't managed to bag any decent spoilers regardless... I did get to sit on the actual Iron Throne in the actual Red Keep set at Titanic Studios though when a friend arranged a tour of the studios for my wife and myself... It was a moment I will remember until my final breath...

That came out nice. Considering the dark tone of GoT, an interesting treatment, at least to the outside would have been steel wool ebonizing to blacken it. I don't know if that would be food compatible on the inside. I also agree that oil finish inside will contaminate your beverage and epoxy inside would be advisable.
