Great result! You know? You'll save yourself a lot of time on the lathe (as well as not needing to sharpen the chisels so much) if you take the corners off the wood on a circular saw first.

My question for the Brits- what the hell is "service wood"?
@dibblethwaite5 жыл бұрын
boblob2003 service wood would would be wood from the service tree. Sorbus domestica. It's related to rowan. In Germany they use the very bitter fruits in (hard) cider making. I've no idea what sort of properties the wood has.

I don’t have as much experience as I would like with wood turning, but I would try putting a dowel in the chuck at the tail stock, and using that to catch the part. That way you’d have 2 hands for more control for a clean cut when you part off. And on the subject of Lime I’d love to see you doing some ornamental carving! (Plus another bass or guitar some day- maybe acoustic 👍)

I saw in a couple of videos from turners on youtube where when they are parting the piece off, they used like a hacksaw blade instead of the parting tool.

Hi Matt, another great video as always. Just one comment. When sizing the clamping diameters, you were using the calipers the wrong way round.

Nice job make. You could have made a jam-chuck to remount the piece and turn the bottom round to suit your form. That way it would just lay on its side and be able to roll around.

Hi Matt. I'm new to all this like you. What chuck are you using in the tailstock for holding the forstner bit? I've inherited a vintage lathe with no instructions and I'm not sure what to get. The chuck it came with can only hold a max of 5mm

And you still aren't wearing a ... Personally I think you are wearing those chips like your own personal "badge of honor" for learning to use a wood lathe. You were very well prepared for this bit of turning. Well done!

Is it lime, as the green citrus fruit I love in my margarita, that you’re turning? Looks great.

No. It is one of the native lime trees in UK, either Small Leaved Lime (Tilia cordata) or Large Leaved Lime (Tilia platyphyllos).

I like the concept of learning with you. Great job. The wood was “lime”? Is there a similar wood in the Colonies? Keep turning. I have the most trouble with the screw, so help with that would be nice. I have watched a number of videos on the screw, but the instructors are so good they go so fast and seem to take for granted I know more than I do. Thus, I miss a lot. Thanks.
@syninys1005 жыл бұрын
European lime is in the Tila genus; the North American subspecies is basswood (and the Japanese one is shina). They are both subtly different from the European lime (tila x vulgaris for the common one), but really those differences are pretty tricky to spot, and certainly not relevant.

Where did you get the hollowing tool. Can you send me the link please
@robertmurray18335 жыл бұрын
The use of lime got me thinking. A lot of people will try and start turning with very cheap timber that's hard to turn and achieve a good result and it puts them off from the start. Spend a little more and select a species that's beginner friendly.

What laser are you using for your saw? I thought it was one of the centrifugal hub lasers for the Glide, but now I'm not so sure. The shot @ 1:02 makes it look like the blade isn't spinning but the laser is on. Am I crazy? I'd like a laser for mine but am not wild about the centrifugal hub lasers because (as far as I know) the saw has to be running before it comes on.
