Grew up Presby. Many pics of Jesus on the walls and stained glass windows. Didn't overemphasise Psalms since there are 65 other books with great content.Sunday was not worshipped as a day. Jesus was worshipped everyday. Baptism of babies is mainly good for bringing un saved family members. If Presby only baptised the saved, they might be saddened to discover how few baptisms they performed. Let's major on what's most important guys. The Cross, the lost, The Holy Spirit, The Word of God

I was born and raised in Baptist churches, and grew up singing the old hymns. One of the things that been driving me crazy is its getting really rare to find Baptist churches in my area that still even USE the hymns. They use the contemporary worship songs, that you sing for a few years, then forget them. I cant even rememost of the songs i sang 10 years ago, but i can still remember the old hymns like "The old rugged cross", "Trust and Obey" "When i survey the wondrous cross" and many others. Most of the old hymns held biblical truths, while most of the "worship" songs is more emotional based.

Best decision I ever made. My eternal salvation means everything to me. I cannot love this comment enough. My family attended a Charismatic church for quite some time and they played only contemporary songs with a loud band. They’d turn off the lights and turn on fog machines and black lights. I asked them if they’d perform my favorite hymn “Victory in Jesus,” and I was told it doesn’t fit their style, and also that don’t know the sheet music for it. 🤦🏾

I enjoyed your presentation. I was partially raised in the Presbyterian church. My family had moved frequently and we went to several different denominations, according to what was near and convenient. For several years we attended the Presbyterian church and I did find Christ as Lord and Savior there. I was baptized there by sprinkling. I had a lot of Baptist friends and they had a lot of skepticism about my faith. But I persevered. I did understand the "singing of the psalms". Glory! Can I shout? But I did have difficulty with the Five Points of Calvinism. In the providence of God, I did end up in the Church of the Nazarene, where I was called to pastoral ministry, which I followed for 50 years. Even for the few differences of understanding and trying to explain God's great calling and salvation, I did often thank God for my roots in the Presbyterian church. Thank you for a calm, reasoned explanation of the Presbyterians.

When you are baptized I pretty sure the amount of water that hits you is not that important. In the Catholic Church the person has water poured over there head we don t sprinkle . Your wet by the time it's complete. And there isn t a steadfast rule you have to be fully immersed to be considered a baptism. The full immersion thing I believe came from the Baptists.. but it is not nessesary. What is nessesary is . The person must say I baptise you in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit. To say I baptise you in the name of God. This is not a valid baptism.

The original Greek word for baptism is a word for immersion. This is what occurred with Christ and that ,for me, is the example to follow. It signifies raising to life, from death to life. Pick up any dictionary and look up a word and you will see SEVERAL possible meanings!! Also, MOST EVERYTHING in the Old Testament was done by SPRINKLING, EVEN PEOPLE. Get a concordance and look up the word SPRINKLE, SPRINKLING! And does it make sense that all those people coming to the Jordan River were immersed? I don't see any pictures of them carrying extra clothes to change and where would they change and then to walk a GREAT DISTANCE back home! I don't think so!! John Wesley didn't think so either!!

So do you think Jesus turned away parents that wanted their babies baptise. I dought it. Look to where this tradition comes from . You will find it is someone's interpretation of a scripture passage. But the scriptural passage will be based on the conversation of that time . Taken out of text. That is the problem with Sola scriptoria. I can make a case for anything if I pick and choose what I want to see in Scripture. Read this book and follow your traditions. Those traditions come from the original church. That church is the Catholic Church.
@cranmer1959
@cranmer1959 Жыл бұрын
The problem with the Romanist view is that you cannot question the authority of men who invent traditions out of thin air. Some matters are matters of adiaphora or indifference. Baptism of infants is one of those matters. But the Protestants are united on their opposition to the Roman Catholic Church. Presbyterians base their doctrine of paedo-baptism on the Scriptures. In the Old Testament the covenant sign was the circumcism of male infants after 8 days. The New Testament sign is the baptism of both male and female infants by sprinkling. You can't make a case for anything from the Bible. The Bible is very specific, while the traditions of men change from one decade to the next. @@hayeslincoln3111

The PCA ordains alleged "celibate" homosexual men as teaching elders or pastors. This is the sort of compromise that results from the semi-Calvinist doctrine of the three points of common grace. Being Catholic the image of Christ on the cross reminds me of what Christ did for me. I don’t worship the image or the cross. When I kneel in church, looking at the crucifix reminds me, helps me focus on God’s mercy. We sing the psalms too. Love singing them. We baptize babies too. We hold the Lords day sacred and honor it. Only time we miss ( at least for me), is if I am sick. We are saved by Grace, but good works are a product of our salvation by Grace. We are not saved by works.

Some Presbyterian churches are into the church growth model of worship, but this is a violation of the regulative principle of worship and undermines biblical worship and sound exegetical preaching. As a Staff Elder (Associate Pastor, Worship and Visitation) in a Baptist Church, I openly say I can make a stronger argument for infant baptism in a covenant context than for baptizing very young children in a credo baptist context. Premature baptism in the latter setting ironically becomes a false assurance of salvation for adults displaying no evidence of regeneration because “I would not have been baptized if I were not saved.” I do hold to believer baptism, but counsel parents against prompting young children to be baptized. Bar mitzvah age seems an appropriate timeframe, announcing the candidate as a son/daughter of the new covenant. We do not use theatrical lights, lasers or atmospheric effects, but we do employ a diverse team of musicians including orchestral and rhythm instruments… as many skilled musicians as the Lord has added to our assembly. Oh, and we do sing the psalms as well. (And absolutely nothing from Hillsong, Bethel, or the like.) We also affirm and teach the doctrines of grace. And we have elders… Yeah, you’ve got us. We’re pretty much Pres-bap-terians. 🤣

Most Presbyterians would say, no, re-baptism is not necessary. If someone thinks their parents were flippant or superstitious when they “had the kid done”, they may wish to do it for themselves. My brother did because it was *his* own decision although our parents did their best, I did not because my parents had fulfilled the vows they made to bring me up “in the nurture and admonition of the faith” & I’d have thought it a huge insult to them if I had. Thanks for the gracious & thoughtful explanation. There are faithful Presbyterian congregations which are more lenient with Psalms & Sabbath-keeping, but they certainly would not argue with you. And a lot of us struggle with how predestination and free will can both be true, but for the moment we admit the tension & leave it up to God to work it out. After all, if we understood Him, He would be just human, not God. (I think it has something to do with eternity & time….)

@@toolegittoquit_001 I've never heard this "gospel of works" you speak of. Please explain. Adoration is worship reserved only for the Trinity. Mary and other saints are venerated (honored) but not adored. The real presence in the Eucharist is as old as Christianity itself. The doctrine of transubstantiation does not explain the what of the Real Presence but the how, or the process, of how the host becomes the real presence (accidence vs. substance). The Papacy is authority given to Peter as the leader of the Apostles (see how Matthew 16 mirrors Isaiah 22). While the role of the Pope has been more clearly defined as time went on, the early church recognized the primacy of the Bishop of Rome over the other bishops.

First we had many stained glass windows with Christ face, his resurrection, crucifixion, on the Mount of Olives, in Gethsamane, our ministers wore robs and vestments, we had a liturgy, we did not use the term being saved" which was against reformed theology quite frankly. And about missionaries, there was never a push there due to the belief in predestination. Many of these things he is talking about does not sound like Traditional Presbyterian or the Church of Scotland teaching. Sounds like some kind of puritan take and some hyper evangelical beliefs. I come from a Bible believing church. What I understand from scripture... 1. God predestined all who hear the gospel and choose to receive Jesus Christ as their savior. As a result, those who reject him go to hell but it didn't have to be that way because God calls everyone to repent and believe on Him. So there are people in hell today because they rejected him but they could have been saved had they obeyed God's call. 2. The only new testament water baptism taught in scripture is emersion so you are breaking from scripture there by pouring and by adding child baptism. 3. The Bible doesn't command only songs to be sung to be Psalms. We can certainly sing praise and worship hymns and songs that glorify God. 4. No where did I read Jesus teaching to do nothing on the Sabbath. He said he is Lord of the Sabbath and made a point to emphasize it is better to do good things on that day. Paul says in Colossians 2:16 let no man judge you in respect of the Sabbath days etc which are a shadow of things to come. 5. We do use pictures of Jesus to teach Bible stories to kids etc and see nothing wrong about it. Jesus is human and God. He walked this earth as a man. We do not, of course, use pictures of "Jesus" as worship icons, stained glass windows and such as.

FYI, the Cumberlands broke away from the mainline Presbyterians over Calvinism ie, that God predestines certain people for salvation and creates the rest to be destroyed in order to "glorify Himself".- a heresy that contradicts the bible and blasphemes God's character. What the bible ACTUALLY teaches is that all men are born separated from God because of Adam's sin but they are all likewise accepted by Christ's substitutionary sacrifice, but it's offered to each as a gift which they are free to either accept or refuse. God doesn't force salvation on some and withhold it from others as these TULIP Presbyterians teach.

He forgot a few things. No images or pictures if Jesus. They call that idolatry.. but pictures of family members etc are not. Double standard. They teach double predestination. This means God created some people expressly to go to hell and others to go to heaven. They also teach that Jesus died only for the elect, not for everyone. And that we are totally depraved, not just fallen. 😂 This is calvinist teaching. All presbyterians are calvinists following the teachings of John Calvin. Their achrinim is TULIP. Check it out.

My first year in college was ruined because I was staying with an aunt and uncle who were Presbyterians. I am Catholic. They knew it and I knew they were Protestants but thought nothing of it. However as time went by my aunt was fanatical about her beliefs and tried hard to convert me to their church. She wanted me to attend Sunday services with her and uncle. I refused to go. I had my church why go anywhere else? Could never understand why they would invite to stay with them if she was going to be this way. Eventually I had to go home on the weekends because she just couldn't stand it that I would not come to he church. She wanted me to read the bible and find out the truth. What really made me angry was that she called the mass "an empty ritual." Not sure how she came to hate Catholics so much. She did wake me up and I did some questioning about my faith and got the answers I needed. I am a better Catholic now than I ever was. One thing I was never able to do with my aunt was have a friendly discussion about our faiths. She was one of those women who was right and that was it. My church has a tradition of stained glass windows and statues and other pictures of saints and Christ. You have to remember for many years people were illiterate and these were visual aids to help them understand the faith. As far as being bible based churches as most Protestant churches are you seem to forget that the church didn't have a bible for over 300 years after Christ. And then it was the Catholic church that produced it. The church was born of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. God did not drop a bible on the apostles' heads.

As an evangelical through my entire life now at eighty, you have to understand that evangelical protestant Christianity is really a "cult" of sorts off of the mainline Protestant denominations. They are pretty much DIRECT SPIRITUAL DESCENDANTS of the Pharisees who were 100 per cent CONVINCED they were the TRUE BELIEVERS AND HEIRS AND GOD'S FAVORITES. Of course they were deceived as Jesus CONTINUALLY pointed out. Anybody that was not with them and their theological beliefs and ways was a heretic. I apologize to you as a Catholic as well as to the Orthodox ( Greek, Russian, etc.) and all the so called "cults", Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Christian Scientists, etc. But pay NO ATTENTION to them as Jesus told the disciples to pay no attention to the Pharisees. There are a FEW decent evangelicals such as Billy Graham, his son Franklin Graham and others who are NOW the ONLY FEW I pay any attention to. Now when these FUNDAMENTALIST/FUNNYMENTALIST types read this, they will condemn me to the pits of hell and start quoting scriptures out of context to bolster their points as you are saved by faith alone (Martin Luther's error) as James, Peter and Paul along with Jesus himself make it plain that "faith without any works is dead, meaningless and won't save you!"

My tradition is Baptist and I and my wife miss the traditional hymns. The contemporary "worship" songs - sometimes called "7/11" i.e., a seven-word verse sung eleven times - have crept into too many churches. We attend a PCA church that is excellent in every way but does not sing the Psalms or the traditional hymns from a hymnal. Our worship music is led by a "modern" worship team (guitars, mandolin, violin, and too-much drums); while the songs we sing are contemporary they are NOT of the 7/11 type (like Getty's "In Christ Alone"). Oh how we would love to be worshipping through the traditional hymns or even sing the Psalms.

One other difference in the Presbyterian Church. As someone who has been raised Presbyterian it was sometimes strange when visiting other Christian denominations. Where we lived in a brand new suburb, the Presbyterian church had not yet been built and our neighbours often invited us to their Churches. When visiting the town my parents met and wed, we always attended the Presbyterian Church my grandparents belonged to. The difference I refer to is in the words of "The Lord's Prayer". It is usually stated as "forgive us our trespasses", but Presbyterians say "and forgive us our debts, while we forgive our debtors". While visiting other denominations I was thrown off by hearing different words. Perhaps you could explain these differences.

Predestination used to sound absurd to me. Now, it makes perfect sense. When I act, it is caused by who I am and the environment that I am in. I don't do things randomly. If it seems random, you just don't know me well enough. My actions may even seem random to me, but they aren't. Causality is integral to the scientific method. If I do something because of who I am, I am still responsible for my actions. So, the end of the universe has already been decided. That feels cold-hearted and cruel, but religion is about believing that it isn't. That takes a lot of faith.

Not many Christians seem to know that there was a book written in the late 1st Century AD that summarized the teachings of the Apostles and the common practices of the Church.
