You can tell when the actor is just trying to protect their voice. There’s a vibration that comes when you actually scream, and when you’re holding back it’s just not there. So, you’ll hear a real scream is almost like a trill, there’s almost an “r” to it, in a way. Meanwhile just a regular, weaker shout, you’ll just hear “ahhh”. Of course, holding back I guess makes sense in a lot of ways! How many takes have they had to do? How many other roles are they working? What episode is this? An actor could deliver the greatest scream of all time in episode 2 and then there’s 75 more episodes and their voice is fucked. So I do always give major props to people who can make that full-throated vibrating shriek work, but I’m never all that upset when they don’t. Except for that Castilian Spanish one. That was just wack.

Context for the Brazillian one: The voice actress is great and Fernanda does a great job as Asuka and has been doing the role for over 20 years BUT voice acting and dubbing are so huge in Brazil that vas like Fernanda usually have to do muliple roles in a single day so she couldn't bare ruining her voice for a day (or multiple) just to get that scream right (the same goes for Fábio Lucindo, Shinji's va) TL;DR is that everyone is getting old but still got bills to pay, and Netflix didn't pay them enough to give their best (which is a shame because the Brazillian dub is mostly great) Edit: Sometimes directors simply use in original screaming/singing/anything when the va can't afford to do that but they might have not done that for the sake of consistency or maybe Netflix didn't allowed them to do so At the end of the day all the blame should be on Netflix

When I say that dubbing is huge in Brazil you might think that vas get paid a lot... They mostly don't, it's just easier to get roles, and that's why they have to do multiple roles in a single day and can't give their all in each and every one of them.

Also another thing worth mentioning, doing higher picthed voices is way harder to Bullara now than it was in the past, her normal voice isnt as high picthed as the one she does for Asuka, so it would probably hurt her throat a lot more as well. I still think she could make a better scream tho

I'm Italian and, I have to admit, even though we've a lot of AWESOME voice actors, it just seems like someone kinda forbids them to scream for desperation. Especially in anime, the Italian version of some character's breakdown is always more underwhelming than the other languages'. I'll never get the reason, because they CAN scream. For instance, I remember Emanuela Ionica's performance while she voice acted Zendaya in Euphoria (the "Open the Door" scene), or Flavio Aquilone's incredible Kira performance

Italian voice actors are some of the most talented people in the world, they study like crazy and train a fuckton of time, only to be underutilized by directors that translate and adapt dialogues like SHIT and give such terrible directions, ruining the product and destroying any possibility of a good performance.

In terms of dubs, I think McKeon missed the mark when Asuka was struggling with the controls. Grant, however, really nailed it. But even McKeon sounds too close to Yuko for me to think about it if I wasn't watching these voices in a direct comparison. Aside from that, I'm going with Grant.

She was mean, but there were good reasons why. She’s very much a product of her upbringing, and while that doesn’t make anything, she did OK, it does explain it. Only 15, if I remember right. Must’ve been so scared. And you can hear it in every dub of that part.

the Brazilian dubbing is great, one of the best in the world, but in some points the discussion is not. Asuka's dubbing is great, it matches her personality a lot, but in this scream it wasn't very good, but nothing that disturbs the experience of (trying) to understand the anime's story.
