Plant person here. I hope that the trays that are attached are wide enough so that they can be cleaned. They get gross after a while. Also, I appreciate your using only one hole because when I water, I plug the hole with my finger to give the water the chance to saturate all the soil before running out. If people are having trouble with root rot it may be because the soil isn't drying out sufficiently between waterings. Love your channel!

Thank you Matthew for showing us that, as a houseplant lover I think it would be better with two drainage holes either side, as you don’t want water sitting on one side coursing possible root rot 😁
@MatthewKellyPottery4 жыл бұрын
I’m not a plant person so you probably know better, I just figured that regular planters have one hole in the bottom middle. That’s why I only did one.

I just spoke with a friend of mine, and she too said the same thing about the root rot problem.

Great video, many thanks I've made a couple of planters using a similar technique. I really like the idea of using your finger for the hole, I used a hole making tool and found it difficult to get the holes where I wanted them to come out on the inside because you can't feel like you can with your finger, so I'm going with that next time. When making mine I learned, the hard way, that it's really important to have the base of the bowl either a bit higher than or the same height as the saucer and have the holes inline with that too, otherwise the plant roots sit in water, rot and your plant dies. Hope this tip helps someone having a go for the first time

Definitely an awesome idea and going to try it :). I’ve been told both ways to make the planter as you would make a bowl (curved bottom) and also like a cyclinder where it has the 90 degree from the clay bottom and clay wall. Does it matter or do you use the cylinder method since you pull the walls (or lol do you do the same pull for both).
@MatthewKellyPottery4 жыл бұрын
I’ve never heard that one would be better than the other for planters. It would be hard to do the rounded bottom and get all the clay out because if the tray is attached you couldn’t trim the piece.
@jasonkohlmeier67074 жыл бұрын
Well you made me feel better because I think the same thing. I did try your style in the video today and it turned out amazing. (Never thought about doing the indentation at the bottom first. Great technique, which I had a few others asking me how I did that. I’d post a pic of it but no idea how to on this. But love your techniques.
