Just my opinion: Ibaraki screams in a closed area like this sound okay but just don't translate well in a full sized venue since they sound more reserved and don't have as much power. Trivium screams flat out sound better but I know that style is what caused pain. If there was a real way to safely manage the pain and keep this more powerful sound, that would be my choice but health always comes first. 🙏

Yeah I like having room for melodies to shine through still - if Trivium were only atonal screaming I wouldn't like them nearly as much - but whatever is healthiest is best longterm of course

Bro nah not even close. 200% effort vocals from Matt is done. He sacrificed his vocal cords for the 4 greatest metal albums of all time. I'm ok with this
@jonathasportella2308Ай бұрын
I think Ibaraki screams sound better for Ember to inferno and Ascendancy, but for the rest of the albums, I believe Trivium screams would sound better
@bigmoneymarkellyАй бұрын
The first one sounds so unfucking believably good dude. It just sounds so much more tough and every word has a unique dynamic to it with that scream. I am a bedroom recording engineer for sure. But im obsessed with vocals and i learned to scream listening to trivium in the mid 2000's so grain of salt ya know. But imo you sound so much more comfortable singing the first one and have much smoother transistions from screaming to singing. But the sing/scream at 7:50 was FUCKING amazing too. I think there are things to incorporate from both personally.
@konstigihuvudetАй бұрын
I think that both styles sound great in their own way. I think the best thing would be to alternate between them and use each style where it fits best. For this specific song I think the Ibaraki style fits better. I think the second/trivium style can sound a little monotone if used 100% of the time.
@henriquespencer8644Ай бұрын

@TommyToboggan611Ай бұрын
Dont say that. the first one is way better. The 2nd one is garbage

@Elijah-NUMetal-IsMyWife-BoydАй бұрын

@randomviewer2730Ай бұрын
As a random dude on the internet that can neither scream or sing, i think 1 was better, but there are some Trivium songs that work best with 2 if you can swing it without wearing yourself out.
@goncaloferreira72Ай бұрын
I liked the second one better but the first one is great also. Why not both? Adds variety and reminds me when you used to do the higher and lower pitched screams. Thank you for the insight! ❤
@tomfranquelli2884Ай бұрын
Didn’t realise how much I missed the old screams especially on older songs. Just, right in my high-school heart, man. But no question the ibaraki sounds more mature, fuller, and honestly more musically dynamic, even if it is a little more difficult to understand the lyrics. I love the idea that other people in the comment section have had, layering both in recorded music. More Ibaraki in more ‘metal-’ songs and a little more Trivium-screams in the more ‘-core’ songs.
@Elijah-NUMetal-IsMyWife-BoydАй бұрын
Honestly, I wish for you to keep utilizing the signature scream, but your Ibaraki technique has SIGNIFICANTLY improved over the past couple months.
@Shad0wReaper133Ай бұрын
I much prefer 2, reminds me a lot of Shogun screams which are my favorite. And like others have said, the second scream is a little monotone, so if you could add some range in there it'd be genuinely perfect.

i think the first one, because it is more "growly" and wild, fits really well with Trivium style, with songs like the ones from shogun, where it needs some really aggressive singing. the second one is more clear and is perfect for the ember/ascendancy song or the post-silence in the snow albums. both are really great 💪🏻

The Ibaraki style, to me, sounds a little bit odd and quiet and inhale-y. It doesn't have the power of your old (ascendancy/shogun era) scream. The second style you did in the video sounds more aggressive, but strangely monotone and forced? I wonder if you can find a middle ground between that and your older style. I am very curious what your approach to screaming is though, and I'd love to chat with you about it if you ever had time. You were a massive musical inspiration to me, and I somewhat modeled my own style after yours. Which of the two styles feels better, and is more effortless?
@Metalguy86Ай бұрын
I definitely like the Trivium screams soooooo much better. The only thing I wish you'd do a bit differently is for the clean singing choruses I wish you'd use more of the raspy cleans like how they sounded back in the day. The cleans sound a little too good, and clean, where that rasp gives it that gritty edge while still showing your talent in the clean department.

I like Trivium style more. And thinking from the perspective of a choice for the Ascendency Tour, I would 100% choose Trivium style, because it's closer to the album recordings. The trivium style will sound more nostalgic, as such Tour could/should sound. Have you guys been considering painting your nails again?
@timeobluy9524Ай бұрын
Trivium style will always be my favorite, it has that unique and instantly recognizable unhinged grit that no one else does, I think it is one of the best screams in metal because of its uniqueness. However, I really like Ibaraki-style screaming in Ibaraki because it fits Ibaraki so well.
@justinguy73Ай бұрын

2 was more of a yell to me personally. Still prefer 1 though. I know it was incredibly damaging for you but the incorrect method you used in the Ascendancy days is still my favourite just for how raw it sounded and how unafraid it was to be in your face. Idk there was just something magical about it. Regardless I'll listen to any music Trivium and Ibaraki put out because you're all superb musicians and are a band I have never stopped listening to since I was in high school.
@justinguy73Ай бұрын
In this example scream 1 works so much better than the second in my opinion. You can even hear the second option sounds so much higher than the screams on the album track you are playing and singing over.

This is just my opinion. For Trivium songs I'd go with option number 1 option. Number 2 sounds like you are blowing your voice up and since it's a monotonic melody, sometimes it doesn't go well with the song.
@CrownlessStudiosАй бұрын
Definitely prefer the second overall, especially on sustained notes - the Ibaraki screams fray too much and too quickly on longer notes. That said, there were a few places the first sounded better. A blend of the two would be super cool.

@tylerthomas4384Ай бұрын
Definitely the first one, as I think the strong distortion almost eliminates that pitch of the second one which I feel gets a little in the way. If it varied more, like distortion on actual notes, it would work so well with Shogun tunes for sure. First one for me though - can't beat it when playing Ascendancy stuff.
@MRhodes24Ай бұрын
I like what doesnt hurt you. But id love to know how your lows you did on Nik's new song compare to these. Also the grit at 7:52 is fantastic for some of the older songs unless thats super taxing on the voice. 1 sounds great, no complaints
The second one definitely sounds like a SCREAM! It has grit and power and aggression. But I think it has too much pitch in it. The first one sounds kinda strained for my taste, like you want too hold it back to a safe zone that much, that you overcompress it and lock inside
@MentadeathАй бұрын
I like the ibaraki screams much better, they just sound much more natural to me, whereas sample 2 is too high pitched and feels forced

I do really like the sound of both, but the 1st one is better, and if the 2nd one wears it down, than you should do the ibaraki scream mostly, although for some songs the 2nd style would work better.

Second is so much better for trivium imo. You actually sound PISSED, it sounds like a yell scream. I feel like it also fits trivium live more, it sounds like a straight evolution of the old style. Also the grit singing at 7:51 is just chef's kiss
@JustinAdams_musicАй бұрын
The only time I miss the old Trivium vocals are on songs like Becoming the Dragon. Do what you need to do to protect your voice.
@ThemaskplagueАй бұрын
I’m so confused that people are saying the second style sounds more like the original album. It sounds nothing like the scream he used back then. The first style in this video is far closer to his screams in 2005
@yuri-ub8kkАй бұрын
technique 1 is kind of quiet in a way although it sounds like a scream should. the second way is more powerful but it feels more like regular vocal distortion. its too high pitched, and has way too much actual "voice" in it. we missed the second technique, but it suits parts like becoming the dragon more. 7:50 is an example. sounds perfect. just not as a scream. Also i feel like its gonna do damage if you use it so high. Unlike 7:50, you do it way higher and sound like you "flex" your throat too much ( 6:43). i dont have your experience in screaming but that sounds unhealthy. if im correct dropping it a bit will sound better and be easier. doesnt sound like mixed voice scream, nor head voice. i dont know the terms well. but i emphasise it doesnt sound healthy. both sound great, but in my opinion i would mix them if able, use both. im aware that in the past you experienced trouble with your voice, so i dont know if your voice lets you do things you did younger, and if the things you did were actually healthy for your voice. SO.. i would either use first technique as a scream and the second as a vocal distortion like 7:50, or try to lower the second technique, take away the actual singing voice from it, deepen it, make sure it doesnt wear you down. If that cant happen DONT use the second as a scream, it most likely will do damage. AND AGAIN BOTH ARE GREAT, i hope i dont come across as a smart !@#$ or disrespectful. you are the proffesional, its up to you, we will love all outcomes.

You could really just mix these two for a bit of variation in the delivery. The second version has more of a discernable pitch element and would be better to highlight certain passages. The Ibaraki style is better for the bulk of the verses IMO

Maybe don't hold back eith rhe volume on 2 and just let it be louder then cleans or progam volume control. Maybe try to find a way to add a little more distortion to it or consider finding a vocalist for screams and stay on the cleans, could be very beneficial

What "ibaraki" stands for? For a long time learner, the first is some kind of dry fry, and the second is fry with more voice, almost a battle on both sides (distorion and voice), reminds old meshuggah. I kinda can do both, and every one has it's place. So, both are AWESOME. No false chords like "Upon the Shores"? :(
@swegmeister96Ай бұрын
Ibaraki is his solo project, where he uses only the first scream.
Please don’t do 2. Please do the first style. Sounds more safe for your voice and also sounds 50x better
@TommyToboggan611Ай бұрын
The first one is 100% better. it sounds far closer to the fry screaming on ascendancy. That is your sound IMO. Anything that gets back that sound is the way to go again IMO. The 2nd one is way way worse. Id go as far to say as id be upset to hear this if I were to see you... Not like mad but just confused as too why? Is there an underlying issue here? It almost seems like you cant support the vocals with enough air pressure. Idk if its mental thing or what. But its like your at 75% the entire time... The energy is gone. Why not just classic Mellissa cross fry? is this not what ascendancy was? Ive never understood the struggle with your voice. The whole Metallica cover band era got to your head, ascendancy was perfect.
