Having finished a Kingdom Hearts 1 (the OG PS2 game) Proud Mode replay, a few months ago after not playing it for years, I can safely say that the game still holds up. It's not some kind of epic masterpiece or anything but the core design of the combat(hitsun, animation quality etc) is pretty well done. Proud mode also forces you to use magic which is actually amazing which you wouldn't know if you only played on normal. Also although you don't get many fancy combos and bells and whistles in this game, the upgrades you do get all have their uses. However if you want to get the best weapon there is a painful grind that'll take you 12+ hours to finish. The atmosphere of the game is still unmatched by any other game in that series and the music fits each world incredibly well and it never feels repetitive. It's also much more platforming heavy than what I remembered and it's full of "metroidvania" design where you can only get to some areas and items once you unlock certain abilities.

Always loved the progression of abilities in Kingdom Hearts 1 and how powerful you can feel in the last dozen or so hours versus the first few hours.
@KnightElSneed11 күн бұрын
@matilyn_rf Absolutely! The way you delete huge health bars in the endgame feels amazing when compared to chip damage you deal in the beginning. There's even a subtle little animation of the health bar depletion as well. They really paid attention to how the game feels.

I also 100% completed OG KH1 a few months back and it absolutely still holds up. It's the best in the series for me personally. It's the only game in the series where it feels like the story, exploration, and combat are as important as each other. That synergy I feel was missing from the others, where those elements either feel disconnected or not balanced enough. In general, I feel there were a lot of surprisingly smart design decisions in the game. Do you have a timestamp of where he mentions the game?

As someone who has a small game awaiting a free Steam release, I can relate to the stuff early on about game development losing, well, steam at the end. In my case it was one of the last projects I worked on with friends in college, and now that we’ve graduated the finishing touches are coming along very slowly since everyone fits it into their schedule differently, and 99% of it has been long done. There’s one big bug I should probably be the one to fix but it’s tough to care enough by now to do it before it becomes last minute. It feels like working on post-launch patches despite the game not being out yet.

I definitely agree that Astro Bot is fun in spite of the basic movement mechanics being so limited. It's my favorite game from this year, but of course I'd be happy if a sequel introduces triple jumps or whatever to Astro's standard moveset. I think the reason people aren't complaining that the movement is worse is 'cause you're not thinking about that when you're having fun. I don't think most people were complaining that Mario's movement was so nerfed in Galaxy for example compared to Sunshine or 64, because they were having so much fun anyway. And I don't think many have asked for any additions to Ratchet & Clank's basic moveset in decades either, 'cause the guns are fun to use. It's not necessarily that people aren't even conscious of it, but people aren't inclined to complain when they're having a great time.

It only takes about an hour to clear once you understand the mechanics and stage layouts. I ended up spending more time with it than any other game this year, replaying it over and over for score and just for fun. Anyways, thanks for the stream dude, it's always appreciated.

IMO the next Zelda can be more restrained without decreasing its size or scope. In TOTK you can explore Hyrule without the paraglider and the game feels significantly more restrained like that already. So I think they can accomplish it with the little changes. I’d be more interested seeing how they continue to apply the typical Zelda twists to another open world. Something like manipulating the landscape or abilities using animals or something lol

Hey! I'm a gamedev, and I know how useful good playtests can be for validating assumptions and checking blindspots. If you'd like, I'll play 15-30 minutes of a given section of a build, and record (mp4) what I'm thinking outloud as I go. I've done quite a few; typically they provide a section like a tutorial, or an introduction to a new mechanic, but often it's just a new save file. Your main channel vids are classic, and I'm glad I can contribute back in some way.

1:53:44 Wondering how much you agree, but the main flaw I found with UFO 50 is that if you’re already really into games, you have a list of games you want to play that you could realistically recreate the experience of UFO 50 with (although this option is WAY more expensive). As good as some of the games are (and I would argue half of them are worth getting the collection for), they don’t really match up to just playing 50 (mostly) fleshed out games. Even my favorite game Rakshasa doesn’t come close to Ghosts n Goblins Resurrections (thanks for the recommendation btw). After cherrying every game in the collection, I can confidently say it’s more enjoyable to go through a backlog more than all of these games. Most of them just don’t have that much depth or content to really sink your teeth into. Like you said, still a braindead recommendation to give people for the value, but just not as something to REALLY get into. Was reassuring to hear you also found something off about it, this was what was off about it to me.
@Kitsune-cv1km12 күн бұрын
It is a shame that with the spotlight that it got UFO50 hasn't dug deeper into appreciation of what has inspired it. As you say why simply not play the games that the games are inspired by, which are more full fledged and *most importantly* fit into a larger game design chain that allows for understanding how certain game ideas changed throughout time rather than also being stuck in some kind of faux metanarrative in the game. Impressive in scale project, but UFO50 is ultimately disappointing considering what more it could have done.
@matthewmatosisextra11 күн бұрын
I think I should abstain from more discussion of it until I play it more. It's a tough game to criticise at all since you can't help but admire the ambition. Anyway, I still have a lot of cherries to get and some cartridges to dust off before I've even tried them all.
@Andrew-xl3gr10 күн бұрын
I don't really agree. Some of the games are derivative like Rakshasa being obviously GnG and Ninpek being obviously SonSon etc, but then there's stuff like Mortol or Warptank where there's really nothing like it as far as I know, and neat combinations of ideas from other games like Valbrace being a dungeon crawler with Punch-Out mechanics. Most of the games aren't even particularly short either; the ones I've beat other than the really arcadey ones have been around 1-3 hours long, longer than some standalone indies like VVVVVV for example.
@locojake1110 күн бұрын
@ There is actually a game like Warptank called Dandara. Mortol also doesn’t have much going on mechanics wise to have very interesting puzzles. Valbrace is more Crossed Swords than Punch Out, Matthew has a stream that you can check it out with. I could keep going, but there are only a handful of games in the collection that feel truly unique in the grand collection of all games. I find this project both frustrating and exciting because it’s clear their team could make whatever they want. It’s sad that they had to waste time on many lackluster ideas that weren’t really worth playing just to meet the 50 game count. I get that they wouldn’t have been able to sell the collection very well without that Marketing hook, but it’s still disappointing. That being said, I’m really looking forward to their next game(s). If nothing else, I’m sure it’ll be a pleasant surprise and an interesting game.
@FailingDuke647 күн бұрын
Part of the games appeal is recreating the game quality by release year and how some of those early games weren’t fully fleshed out in any combination of music, sound, and gameplay. Why play devil may cry 1 or 3 when 5 exist is what your statement sounds like comparing it to the most recent ghost and goblins. Your statement is diminishing to just how incredible the feat of the game is, how it isn’t made by 50 different studios, just the 1, and its 1 packaged item recreating the bootleg multi-rom carts. For you to see it as having a favorite game does its job on its premise.

While there is a overarching story for the games, it's not really anything that is too important to follow in my opinion. Some games the plot is more prevalent than others. Avoid the original Metroid 1 & 2 on NES and Game Boy unless you want to look at them for historical purposes. The remakes are significantly better and would be better to play first. Super Metroid is a good starting point since it gives a good reference for what base Metroid is like. Metroid Prime is also good in that regard, and it's on Switch. I have not played that version, just the Wii version via Prime Trilogy. Metroid Dread is also good as well. Technically this is one of the games that focuses a little more on story, but it's not a huge part of the game and you should be able to understand what's going on without any context. Hope this helps!
@somefella-w7n6 күн бұрын
If you don't want to just play them chronologically I would go Zero Mission (remake of 1) -> Metroid 2 -> Super Metroid -> Fusion. That way you pretty much get the full picture of 2D Metroid. Each game leads into the next story-wise (though the story isn't extremely important).

Listening to the price part right now. I would pay $20 USD for it because I am a fan of your work and I do think most people who will buy it at or close to launch are in a similar spot. It would also be a good price point for sales since it scales nicely to the average consumer's wallet and expectations. That being said it would kind of be a case of "the early supporters getting the worse deal" you mentioned since it's low enough to get your fans in but too high to get normies in without a % sale. You could go Undertale mode and price it at $10 but that would be in my opinion too low for the average fan who is gonna buy it day 1. It would kinda be the perfect price for it to never or rarely go on sale but you would probably be leaving money on the table early on. That's up to you to decide. Looking forward to it. If you need an animator for future games or a quick little trailer, hit me up. I'd do a short trailer for free for you.

Hi Matt, just wanted to get something off my chest. A while back you shared some early concept art for one of your projects, and I took that as an opportunity to do some design critique practice. It wasn't really appropriate of me to champ at the bit and post it online, criticizing something that was clearly still work in progress. I guess I was too eager to critique the critic, but I didn't really put myself in your positions where you might not want early work-in-progress stuff scrutinized so heavily, especially at the beginning of your game dev careers. I can imagine responses like mine made the game dev journey even more stressful for the two of you than it was. New indie game developers shouldn't be held to unrealistically high standards when working on their first projects, no matter the background of the people involved. I'm happy to hear that your first game is just around the corner and I'm excited for whatever the future holds.

Crash Team Racing is phenomenal! And of course there is the original Super Smash Bros. You could play those with people you know and bring them into your tradition. Additionally, I think Matthew himself has spoken about Ape Escape and Chrono Cross on the main channel. Neither is a perfectly polished masterpiece but they’re both interesting games you probably wouldn’t expect a big studio to attempt now, and because of the PS1 wild west approach to 3D game design there are even ideas executed in ways you rarely see in modern indies.

As far as remakes go, this might be an even more cynical viewpoint than yours lol, but I just don't trust most developers to be able to create a classic from scratch. Some do fine, I don't think Nintendo need to worry much about remaking Mario 64 or anything. But when someone announce a remake, I always gotta take into account, "what have they been doing lately?". Square Enix only decided to do FF7 Remake after a string of disappointing games. I personally don't believe that any other game Bloober Team makes is gonna be as good as the Silent Hill 2 remake. Sonic Generations is a welcome re-release 'cause it's still the best Sonic game that Sonic Team has made in 20 years. I think it's pretty optimistic to think Grezzo will make something that tops Ocarina of Time 3D or Link's Awakening on Switch, I sure don't think Echoes of Wisdom is that. And Capcom haven't made, in my opinion, a better Resident Evil game than 4, after many, many, _many_ attempts, although some were better than others. Konami made Metal Gear Survive and then stopped making games for ages, so sure, just pretty up Metal Gear Solid 3. At some point, I think you might as well just have another go at the good one. Remakes don't always turn out great, I can think of plenty I dislike, including examples of remakes above. But I don't think they have a worse batting average than original titles and there are plenty of them that I love way more than the original, too. And I don't think it's weird that the audience is hungry for remakes either with how lackluster many of these newer titles are. I spent 60 bucks on the new Mario & Luigi game recently and I wish I'd just put those into the Thousand Year Door remake instead, unfortunately.

Matt, I would have liked to ask you in the stream what do you think about the Sakurai game dev channel. I will keep it in mind for next time.
