You've just made my day, I commented on your last video saying I hoped Senja would appear and you've not let me down, it's basking in the glory of top spot! I've now got 8 months to come up with a week long itinerary that takes in the best hikes to complement route 862. First and last nights will be in Tromso to allow me to ditch my bike bag, next stop probably the camp site at Sommaroy, as that area looks great, before then getting the ferry to Botnhamn to take in the delights of Senja. Thanks for serving up a great series of inspirational videos. Your mix of footage and narration is superb, I particularly loved the dialogue in one video when you dismissed a low moment for you as just that, a moment soon to be replaced by better times. So true. I may be picking your brains for a tip or two nearer the time ;-)

Hi Matthew. You did it again: entertaining, informative and inspiring. Great editing and storytelling. I am sitting here, just as you launched the video, crunched over Komoot, Google maps and other apps, planning next summer's trip "Norge på langs", ie starting at Lindesnes and cycling all the way up to Nordkapp. (if I can make it...). So I will follow many of your tracks, and it gets me really excited. Can't wait. Thanks for the great work! PS if I were to offer one piece of constructive feedback, it would be that you read through and edit the subtitles. I realise it's some sort of automated speach to text system, and some of the interpretations of Norwegian names (and some other words in your charming dialect :) turn pretty silly in the subtitles :)
@matthewnorway3 жыл бұрын
It's fun looking over maps and planning your long journey north next year! I'm excited for you! Glad the videos have given you some inspiration! I'm sure you'll make it to Nordkapp! In regards to subtitles. I have three options. 1. leave them off. 2. Turn on an automated text. 3. Write out the whole video manually. Obviously, number three is two much work for a one man band. Option 2 doesn't allow me to go through the automated text and changed certain words that are wrong. For people who don't understand English that well then I'm sure the automated text helps to some degree. Unfortunately Trondheim will be Chumhiem until I have 1 million subs. But I appreciate your feedback and support of the channel Dag!

I agree with what u say on Lofoton. I did not like the E10 at all, too much traffic, but surprisingly the roads going round the islands are very quiet and yip the 815 is the way to go. I got the impression that most tourists just rush up and down the E10, some Norge drivers can be aggressive and inconsiderate as is the case most places.

Amazing!! You've inspired me and my girlfriend to do some cycle touring in Norway this year, probably over summer. You seem to enjoy a lot of good weather on these rides, is that clever editing, good luck or do you just head out when the forecast looks favourable? I'm just wondering what our chances are of encountering similar weather or two weeks of grey skies and rain? Thanks. James.
@matthewnorway3 жыл бұрын
If you watch my coastal series you will see how the weather works out. I always plan my ride around the weather. If it's bad I cycle less. If it good I cycle more. If it's raining in the morning but clear and sunny in the afternoon then I'll wait. You'll never have two weeks of cloud and rain. The weather changes so quickly here. You may get 3-7 days of really good weather followed by 2-4 days of unsettled weather. Come flexible and plan you trip around the forecast.

Hei! You cycled through Nr5, and mentioned the glacier, but you should try to cycle TO it, especially the road from Røssvoll (Mo i Rana) to Svartisvatnet (black ice lake). On that road you will see the amazing green clay waters along the river offshoot from the glacier, mountains grasslands and at the end you can go on the ferry over the lake for a short hike up the rocky terrain (where the Ice was stretching only 100 years ago), this hike place feels like hiking a Greek mountain as it is completely made of light brown rock with thousands of small ponds where water gets trapped in the sun (so you can go for a dip in the not so cold water).

this road only takes 1-2 hours also so it's good for everyone.

Great video. A+++. What's the earliest in the year you could feasibly arrive in Kristiansand, avoiding the cold of winter and freezing to death at night or during the day, to begin cycling north towards the Nordkapp? How long would it take to reach the Nordkapp having ridden some of the spectacular roads you have shown in this series and others? When would you say is the latest in the year you should be approaching the Nordkapp giving you enough time to ride back south to where to catch a train or flight south again? Would 4 months from say start of June, July, August and finally September ie 4 months be enough time do you think? I am thinking of taking the new ferry route that will start in April from Netherlands to Kristiansand. Just remembered Brits only have 90 days in 180 days in the EU so possibly only mid June to mid September which sounds doable. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
@matthewnorway3 жыл бұрын
Start of June to end of August is the best time to bikepack/tour with tent. You shouldn't have any problems cycling up to Nordkapp in under 90 days. Most people cycle the 3000km journey between 20-50 days including all the arctic roads in this episode. Worst case take the train in certain places.
@alexmorgan34353 жыл бұрын
@@matthewnorway Thank you for your reply Matthew. Much appreciated. Norway is so beautiful. Are you a permanent resident now? If so you have made a very good choice of where to live. Like your quote "Paradise is not just palm trees". Thanks again.
@blissonwheels Жыл бұрын
I started the trip to Nordkapp in 2008 in mid May and regretted it initially - I deliberately slowed down and waited for Spring to catch up with me, and it made all the difference. No-one really wants to ride when everything is grey and there's slushy snow in places - if you wait for a bit, in June you get 100% daylight and by mid-June the RV17 and Lofoten Islands are full of green growth and flowers, and the wildlife is just spectacular. I have to say I found Finmark hard work because there's mostly gravel, thin moss, and desolate windswept vistas everywhere even in high summer. I think Matthew is better adapted to that than most of us :-)

One question - the arctic mosquito - no mention. Is it, was it an issue?
@matthewnorway3 жыл бұрын
The Arctic mosquito is the size of a football and can suck 2 litres out of you while you're a sleep! Joking aside, a lot of the coastal area is reasonable fine. In forests areas or inland it can be nightmarish. Lofoten, Senja, etc I had no problems.
@alexanderlawson16493 жыл бұрын
I cycled thro Northern Sweden into Norway and Lofoton in 2018(July). I found mosquitos to be a non issue, only rarely thro the whole trip were they a prob. A deet repellent is highly effective, here in Scotland the midge is much worse by a large margin. When going thro Vesteralen/Lofoton I dont think I even saw a mossie.

Hi Matthew. 3000 subscribers. Think something has to change, you need to do something new , maybe you could be out on the road yourself , or maybe you could review some bikepacking gear. want you to get more subscribers and also more exciting videos.
@matthewnorway3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your support Lars. From my understanding there are two main ways of getting more subscribers. One, pump out as many videos as possible each week. Two, as you mentioned, do videos with high demand. To be honest, I have a long term plan and strategy for the channel so aren't too concerned about views or subscribers right now. The average channel take 152 videos to reach 10,000 subs. I've only pumped out 50 videos. I expect the next 50 will take me well over 10,000. But with all that said, I appreciate your feedback and take in your suggestions on new content. Thanks again.
