10 years ago, I built a outdoor sofa for $600. Lounges on both ends, adjustable back rests, and cushions. Made it out of ceder 2x4s and 1x6s, simple 90 degree cuts and few hinges. The day I was finishing it up in the garage, a neighbor walked by and offered to buy it, I sold it for $2000 and built another one for myself.

65 yo lady here. I made this for my son. Two chairs and the sofa. The first chair uses a 25” cushion but the 2nd chair and the sofa were made for 24” cushions. Had a lot of challenges since I was working on a 5x15’ patio but I finished the project and am super proud. Oh btw I didn’t buy the plans but I did listen to this video numerous times.

Last year, I was the maintenance guy for an adolescent boys drug and alcohol rehab facility. Teenage boys tear up everything, and my boss was tired of buying 8 new couches every year. So I built 8 "couches" very similar to your design. They were built for strength, so I used 2x4 and 2x6 for everything. And I built them to fit the abundance of couch cushions we had left from current and old couches. Also, I cut all the pieces and then stained all the pieces before assembly. I did take pictures of the first one, "the test couch," that I fully made before making all 7 others at one time.

My wife and I visited Shipshewana, IN recently and the Amish had composite furniture for sale everywhere. It was some high dollar stuff for sure. They were also able to finish the edges pretty nicely which is not a typical thing for composite decking materials and I noticed they referred to it as 'poly' furniture.

These look amazing! Building to fit the cushions is a great tip to reduce costs on oversized cushions. I especially like the unique design using 1x material. Every other creator tends to use 2x and/or 4x and they're nice but it's nice to have an alternative option. Thank you for that!

👍🏽 I too built my patio furniture because two main reasons, one is as the ridiculous prices and the other was most of them are made low quality slapped together in a factory as fast as they can go and fall apart after a few years of use. Besides I had fun doing it!😁

Fantastic build. I frequently go to my local garden centre and take pictures of their expensive garden furniture and try to make them myself. Not just garden furniture but planters etc. They turn out a lot cheaper and usually as good or better than the store bought. Nice set! A couple suggestions (hope you don’t mind)… 1)the seat and back supports you added to the couch were placed flat. If you had them on edge they’d make it a lot sturdier. 2) the arms had no support either. Being made from 1” thick boards they’ll have some give. Putting a board on edge underneath (centered, maybe 2-2 1/2” wide) adds support for when people use them to lower themselves or get up out of the furniture. Could even use that tapered cutoff from the seat back if it’s long enough 😁

I havent built my actual furniture yet, but a trick for saving money on the cushions.. buy them towards the end of the summer with plans to build the furniture in the spring. I have a scratch-and-dent/overstock type of furniture store about 45 minutes away, and i got a bunch of the larger 25" (and they're THICK) bottom cushions, matching back cushions, and a few matching decorative cushions. Paid $10 each for the bottom and back cushions, and $3 each for the little ones. All a beautiful blue, thick, high quality. This way, i can build my furniture to the specs of the cushions i was able to afford, instead of building the furniture and getting stuck with being forced to overspend on cushions that would fit. I got lucky and found big ones for cheap!

That looks slick! I see a lot of this type of outdoor furniture built with 2x6s and even 4x4s, and it makes this style stick out even more! I have some reservations about 3/4" knotty pine in this application, I'm kind of worried it's too soft with too much movement to hold up long-term. I think I'm going to build a similar chair as a test piece, taking your advice to fit a 24x24" cushion, and sneak some 2x material into areas they won't be seen. I also wonder about using 1x or 2x pressure treated material, cut into little triangles to fit at the end of the legs, just to keep the end grain out of the water! Thank you for this spectacular video! I love the design, and it definitely got the gears turning in my head! :)

And by chance,Do you wood putty the knots to give them a sleek, smooth look... or do you have suggestions? Did you clear coat yours with clear paint? Or a urethane coating? For longevity.... I want to give these a good color, but make it worth the effort for longevity. I appreciate your time and love the videos.
