It means plenty, for the regular season. Build a proper team around Matthews and maybe he has a shot at getting a cup. Shitty teams with a couple great offensive players do not win cups.
@andrewmachado69889 ай бұрын
@@MikeC-nu7ty How are they supposed to “build a proper team around Matthews” if they have no cap space to sign any players? Trade deadline will come and go and Leafs will make no significant moves or sign anyone worth a damn.
@MikeC-nu7ty9 ай бұрын
@andrewmachado6988 you sit pretty until Tavares' and Marners contracts are about up 1.5 years. Sign them to something reasonable or fire them into the sun. Then you build around Matthews and Nylander while they're still in their primes. Simple. Or you continue to be buyers at the deadline when this team is 3 top 4 D, a goalie and a ton of depth scoring away from being a cup contender and waste the entire Matthews era because the fan base has for some reason believed we've been in "win now" mode for 5 years straight meanwhile our stars are just now beginning to enter their prime. And yes. How many goals matthews scored in the regular season matters just as much if he does or doesn't have a cup. It's still the regular season. There are a ton of incredible players that are looked back at as being top players in the NHL that unfortunately didn't ever have the proper team around them to win a cup. It's just as much luck as it is being a dominant player. Every cup winner has solid goaltending, great defense, depth scoring, and 3-4 players that could have won the Conn Smythe. It's not a one player game. It's not basketball where an all star literally can carry a team to a win.

As amazing as Matthews, Nylander and Rielly is this year, I still think that even if they beat Boston, they won't beat Florida. You need more key players that tick checkboxes the Leafs are not currently checking, and a system change to take on a team of that style. It's a horrible matchup for the Leafs.
