AFAIK - Backblaze only keeps the data you currently have online and active. You can pay more to have a 30-day history of "deleted" files, but it is by no means a long term backup solution. Backblaze is meant to be for disaster recovery. Also, I use Pelican style hard drive cases to hold my drives. $90 for a padded waterproof hard case that you can grab quickly if you need to make a run for it. Holds 20 drives and made by Orico. Once you have enough data to justify the initial expense, you need to think seriously about LTO.

Good to know, Paul. Appreciate you specifying that. Definitely want to get that Orico case - I use their individual hard drive cases, but they offer no water protection. And I probably would have gone the route of LTO had I kept making client projects that were shooting in data-intensive codecs. Now that I'm focusing on my KZbin channel almost exclusively, I'm not really creating so much data that I need to seriously consider LTO. It's definitely the best bang for the buck! Another great vid! We use Backblaze for unlimited cloud storage and it's amazing. Although we don't have a pesky 1tb/mo data limit; I sure hope that's not becoming the standard... I do enjoy nerding-out over data management, so thanks for sharing.

@@matthewTobrien FCPX Library Manager has the benefit of being able to show a list of projects inside each library in an offline database and it has some neat functions that enable you to recover drive space by quickly and safely removing proxies and optimised media - but, as I said, it has recently become a little bit clunky.

Id suggest a zfs server like truenas for live network storage and LTO tapes for archives that are kept offsite. Good chance you need something off the cold storage hdds you are using and find its been affected by bitrot and corrupted

wish i found this earlier, i used to use their "cd finder"way back when. I am using wincatalog but i think neofinder is way more powerful. Why can't adobe do this with Bridge have an option for offline drives and now we would be able to do it all within our projects (for creative cloud users)?

You could always create a third set of backups, encrypt them, and have a buddy keep them in their closet. That'd be an easy off-site option and wouldn't cost much.

So where is the RAID structure in your system, or do you not use raid on a NAS?

This video is a bit old, but my current setup includes 3 RAIDS. I have one 12TB Pegasus R4 and two 24TB Pegasus2 R8s. R4 has all of my KZbin vids, one R8 holds all of my client work and the second R8 is that drive's backup. No NAS only because I don't ever really need to access my stuff remotely nor do I have any other editors/employees so no sharing of media is needed.

You ever consider a large NAS?

Yes. But I haven't pulled the trigger because 1) they can be more work to keep up and running (and they're more work to set up) 2) I don't have multiple editors/personnel who need to access a shared drive 3) I've never really dealt with the friction of not being able to access the contents of my big drive remotely

you have many drives, don't you have to replace them every 5 years due to their lifespan. So isn't 10 TB drives with its duplicate better?

I personally don’t plan on replacing them every 5 years because they’re so infrequently used. But I’ll of course plug them in and spin them up every once in a while to make sure they’re working. At some point I’m sure I’ll consolidate some of the oldest drives down to larger drives to decide the amount of drives I have to store.

@@matthewTobrien As my 20-drive case gets full of drives, I copy the smaller drives over to bigger drives. Then I box up the older smaller drives and store them at my sister's home. Solves two problems at once.
