Honestly, Gabriel Oak might be historys most silent protagonist. Like, he barely had ANY lines at all. I salute you sir for breathing life into that part. Can't imagine it's easy.

He has this gentle, kind, way about his person that is nonetheless very manly, and I think that as girls, that not only makes us feel this tenderness at the sight of this “gentle giant” sort of person, but it’s also the dream guy lol

"Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife, Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray; Along the cool sequester'd vale of life They kept the noiseless tenor of their way." Thomas Hardy, circa 1874 "Far from the Madding Crowd" is a classic novel of English literature written by Thomas Hardy - In terms of Hardy's complete works "Under the Greenwood Tree" is a true love story. Inspite of some seriously strange occurrences found in the novel, it is one of Hardy's warmer narratives (compare "Tess of the D'urbevilles" and "Jude The Obscure".) Thomas Hardy's first novel was serialised anonymously in Cornhill Magazine in 1874 initially; Hardy's likely intention was to rattle his readers out of their bourgeoise complacency! Hardy's father was a builder/stonemason and his mother an ambitious, unusually well-read 'domestic' who prioritised her son's education childhood years at home, So determined was mother, Hardy's first job was in an Architect's office. Although Publisher's vetoed Hardy's first novel, perhaps "The Poor Man and the Lady" was based upon his own experience working above his social station; (as it was set in an architect's office.). They deemed the author's obvious, open resentment toward the privileged; inappropriate and subversive. Publisher's informed him; his writing was so flagrantly bitter at times, it revealed his common roots. Hardy knew he was a man on the margins socially. So instead of writing about the obvious chasm between peasantry and privilege, he drew upon his intimate, first hand passion for the countryside where he grew up. Hardy's unique literary calling-card was in his much beloved natural surroundings, Hardy found ways to aesthetically paint vivid pictures of treasured landscape of a childhood, set against resplendent sunsets, rolling green hills, pastoral fields, sheep, cows and birds against colourful backdrop of shifting seasons. Unable to articulate extremities in politics of poverty in Victorian England... He cleverly subverted stories of character's lives whilst disrupting genre boundaries in verbose descriptions of flora and fauna, always depicting simple, happy peasants hard at work on land, while murder, madness, mayhem and Machiavellian shade derived from other powerful sections of social strata. . Set in the beautifully realised rural country of Hardy's imagined place: 'Wessex': Vinterberg's film captures the mystical beauty and sublime natural world of feudal labourers and farmers who live and work by the land. Essentially it is a story of love, constancy and loyalty with the main character Bathsheba Everdene the desirous central 'character of three very different men. on one hand, yet it's .. . Upon completion of my first reading of the book...I recall feeling disappointed, (Some thirty years have passed since, of course, there were questions then, still more questions today!. Typical Hardyesque questions for me; and a significant gratitude also, it could have gone completely and utterly awry! Never forget how my chest ached long after reading the words on the final page and closing the book on pathos and pain, Tess' life. And frustration and loathing aimed at a man of his times ... like that 'too little, too late!! Angel!!" We all know how hard this world was for all who inhabited Wessex tales. Why oh why? I questioned why and how Gabriel's love unwavered, he waits silent, patient. He truly fell in love with her blithe spirit as she rode her horse and then how much courage required for His sweet, heartfelt proposal to the young Bathsheba. She would admit she was insensitive, lassez faire , somewhat cool, even mocking in my opinion toward an earnest, hardworking Gabriel! Oh, no! I have returned to the test once more, presently about page 150. I am older, wiser now and so I hope I will be less judgemental of Bathsheba Everdene's persona. We shall see.. Throughout the text Gabriel protects, guides, selflessly allowing Bathsheba to make her own choices, even when he knows they can be big mistakes, he tells her to do what is right. And even, when he wipes away the chalk words scrawled across the coffin lid which states Mother and child... he wipes the evidence away to be assured she will not be hurt by what lies within. It is for me, the most macabre coffin-opening scene featuring the corpses of a mother and her baby, The dangerously hostile nature of Troy, this man she married exploding breaking as he tells Bathsheba she is nothing, kissing the mouth of his dead love. So many scenes of life-threatening elemental eruptions of fire and thunderstorm, numerous violent animal deaths, and sexual symbolism so brazen that it can only have been intended to cock a snook at Victorian prudery. "An ode to passion, that is timeless" is Matthias' description of the story, adapted to film with vibrantly fresh eyes, yes indeed Gabriel's deep abiding constancy pays off, I have to say the denouement that Vinterberg created was far superior to Hardy's ending. Gratefully, his modern take is improvement all round! Vinterberg gives us a 21st Century take on Bathsheba's choices and the men who fell in her wake.
