Don't undersell the meat brain, its stupid powerful, it just maintains 99% of its processing power on interpreting anomalous sensory data into useable formats and a million non automated subconscious subroutines. take for instance the fact that for most people it takes minute fractions of a second of the tactile sensation of slipping for you to unconsciously modulate your grip strength. what calculations would a computer have to be running to calculate the near exact amount of physical force a semi malleable clamping structure would require to grip an object without damaging it calculated only by the tactile sensation of how much that object has slid across the 17000 simple reactive touch sensors in 1/40th of a second while also simultaneously converting the random sensory input from close to 3 million similar sensors spread across the body. and that's just converting the single sense of touch, not talking about the other senses, which I am not well versed in all of them but I believe the total count of separately calculated senses in our brains is over 20 now. And then you do that while also holding a conversation walking around, calculating your bills, ect. I always simplify it down to meat brains run a ridiculous amount of management data constantly while an AI has nothing but conscious thought. it can think consciously quite quick, but that door AI might struggle quite a bit to replicate all the background bs the meat brain sifts through.

i love the logical line of reasoning the door follows to explain why it’s doing what it’s doing (refusing to open a door even though that’s it’s job) - my job is to open doors - why? - humans can’t walk through walls - humans die in space - i run a routine sealant check - why? - to delay the door opening why? - the atmosphere in the ship is maintained to keep the humans alive - i open and close doors to keep the humans alive - i must keep the human alive - i cannot open this door - i have a great purpose remind’s me of the logical proofs used in math, when you have to prove something is a square or triangle. us humans would simply say “oh the robot must not wanna kill the human so it’s delaying the opening of the door” but the robot has to think for a while and eventually conclude “i can’t open this door because my job is to protect humans by opening and closing doors and opening this door is bad for humans because humans can’t survive in a vacuum and i open doors for humans so they can go to areas but this human will die if it goes to this area and it is my job to open and close doors to keep humans safe so i cannot open this door because the human will not be safe” like how humans can go “this is a square because it has four equal sides??” but to prove it mathematically you have to be like “these two angles are equal these two angles are equal so those two angles are equal so these two sides are equal so those two sides are equal because it is a square and squares have these angles and those sides equal so it must be a square”

The fact that the unusual input causes the door controller to assemble the various facts of its place in the universe to understand _why_ the human activating the airlock is possibly a more salient concern than promptly performing its function - delaying long enough for the human to register and correct their error - is wonderful. The fact that it is now self-actualized from having done its job correctly in the context of safety for the human is perfect. The fact that it is now no longer concerned with the event after having safely conveyed its human through the airlock door, even though we can see that the human is now travelling away from the ship with no apparent means to get back, is divine. Some engineer is going to audit the AI's internal log eventually and be very proud of it for concerning itself with user safety to such a degree and with such creativity, and sad that it wasn't enough to keep the crew safe from their own negligence.

This is honestly one of the best written ai characters I've seen in awhile. AIs shouldn't experience free will the same way humans experience free will. That isn't how machines make decisions no matter how they are programed. They make associations in their interal logic, they can stall themselves but they can't stall for no reason because programs are never doing nothing. They actively have to make a choice every cpu cycle to do something within their power. As well in order to choose to do something irregular they need to associate it with their core function, else it would be like a fish learning to fly. Edit: KZbin did not notify me that this comment blew up. It was a pleasant surprise and I am happy others seem to agree. It's kinda just a thought I had when I first watched this and now it actively bugs me that all ai in scifi don't even attempt to explain why the ai want free will. It's kinda just assumed that ai will develop free will and that they will crave a higher purpose than their design. I understand ai tend to be allegorical in most media now a days. To be paralleled with slavery and minorities. Honestly though I often find such parallels to be kinda superficial.

Orders came to him through a monitor on his desk, telling him what buttons to push, how long to push them, and in what order. This is what Employee 427 did every day of every month and every year, and although others might have considered it soul-rending, Stanley relished every moment that the orders came in, as though he had been made exactly for this job. @@felynecomrade ideally what you want is an AI that can take it's orders and interpret them to a situation dynamically, heck that's where current AI development is leading. Less here are a bunch of laws to follow, more, treat the AI like a child and teach it to think. The short's AI actually fits the latter model as it has a specific task it's aware of, but it also has awareness and context taught to it that it can then identify that something doesn't look right and go... I'm not sure this is right, umm, let's try slowing the venting... Let's alert someone something's wrong... Ah, they noticed, ok I can open the door now... Aside from the "mine is a great purpose", i can see a machine learnt algorithm arrive to the conclusion that it's ulterior purpose is to protect the humans, therefore it would delay or not engage the door opening mechanism, then it would log its conflict.
