Thanks for the samples Matt! Mine's already preordered in red. This is the camera I've been waiting for from Nikon ever since mirrorless started, and it became possible to make digital cameras as thin as film cameras. The thing is, this isn't just a superficial fashion statement - I find that people are way less weary of me and more willing to be photographed when I'm using a camera that appears small and fun, than when I'm shooting on my D4S for example. The big pro cameras just intimidate people! So FINALLY we have the perfect best of all worlds in the ZF.

Great video, its nice to hear all the good points from a Nikon fanboy once in a while:) I am seriously thinking of getting the Nikon Zf as it ticks really all the boxes I wanted. Flippy screen, uber cool styling, IBS, 10 bit log 4K video capabilities, Expeed 7 and amazing autofocus, two card slots. The price is just perfect. I have waited a long time for this. Well done Nikon, you really have an amazing portfolio now, probably best in class for 2023.

Yep. It is interesting to see the few independent-ish reviews out so far. Seems it still has eyelash autofocus. Nikon really need to sort this. Gone back to using a metal chassis, which is good. Hopefully nikon have learned there lesson there. I can see this camera killing sales of the Zed 6ii. Either that camera will need to drop in price, or a Zed6 iii be released. I'm going to wait to ensure no recalls or issues as with the Z8 fiasco.

Great camera, and definitely a one that I will have as a retro-styled body lover. I have the Df and the Z fc, this will probably make the latter somewhat redundant though! It is what I expected it to be with a bonus; the high resolution mode! For those looking for an entry level Expeed7 body, I think this does everything you need and then some. However, I understand that not everyone is excited by a retro-styled body and many would rather have a Z6III. But, on the flip side, this could be a good indicator for what to expect from the Z6III, which will hopefully follow sooner than you think.

@@toddm6999 I have a Nikon FE2 built in the late 70s. This ZF looks much like it. That's retro. Simplicity made these old cameras a joy to use. Minimum dials and buttons.

I have the Z6ii and a number of Z lenses. I purchased the Zfc, for a backup, and found that not only did it bring back great memories of my early SLR cameras, but it also added a fun element for me. I jumped at the opportunity to get the new Zf and preordered one on the first day it became available. Looking forward to having lots of fun and great photo adventures with it. Thanks for your video which got me even more excited about the Zf.

I love B&W photography as it was 50 years of my life until I had to move to Queensland and lose my darkroom. I have this morning ordered my Zf camera and have it on backorder. This looks like a very exciting camera. Much better than I thought it would be. Possibly a real Z 6ii upgrade for me. I watched another pre-production review and they said the rolling shutter isn't very good, whereas you said it's good. So I guess it needs more testing with a production model. The AF and 10-bit log recording for video are what really interests me. I also LOVE how the top dials look! I wonder what the video bitrate is? Shame it doesn't go beyond 4K60fps, as I would have liked to see 4K or 6K 120fps for slowmo, but at this price I think it's fair as it is. I bet the Z 6iii if it ever happens will cover those shortcomings though.

This is better than I thought it would be. Matt you went way more in depth than the other reviewers. My two questions are how was the thermals and Fuji has that mode where you can over ride the manual controls and operate it like any other Mirrorless or DSLR, can you do this on the ZF, and control the shutter, aperture and iso with possibly the command and sub command dials?

Although I am tempted to grab the 180-600... I think that lens makes more sense on an upgraded body. My main decision is do I wait for the Z6iii or do I become a cool hipster and get the Zf to match my beard 🤣

I have loved every minute of my Z6ii but with the Z8 launch I was really hoping for a mid range 24mp with 10bit video, AF improvements & fully articulating screen so this is a pleasant surprise & in a standout retro body. I can absolutely see clients commenting on that. Something I would like to see is the touchfn feature as I do use my Z6ii joystick a fair bit. Also a shame it lost an Fn button instead of gained one as they are so so handy

Nice review Matt. The Zf basically contains the updates we've been all waiting an eternity to appear in the Z6iii. Had Nikon included them in the Z6iii first instead of the Zf, far fewer would get sold. I wonder who out there is waiting for this camera body and whether they'll be tempted while waiting for a Z6iii to appear. Personally I don't need to be remapping my muscle memory to dials away from digital mirrorless, I have a X-Pro2 that fulfills my 'walk around' requirements which has taken an age finding a configuration of the settings that work for me. For my 'pro' work I use my Z9 and love it plus the Z glass, and still shoot my D3 at events with its 3D tracking. So what good looks like to me, is an early appearance of the Z6iii poss with a new 30+mp sensor, and the new features from the Zf updated into Z9/Z8 bodies via firmware updates.

Very interesting camera , I like the retro dials and look , high performance IBIS , full frame , great low light performance and though I love my other Nikon cameras this would probably be a nice contrast to play with and a great addition to them. I did seriously consider the ZFC before , then decided not to but this more that makes up for the short comings of that camera for me. I think I 'd like an olive green body and maybe silver metal but I donno when I buy a Nikon camera , with the exception of my first entry level one that I gave to my wife , then I want to keep them I have 5 now and I usually don't shoot a lot so hummm ....

I think this camera really suites the purpose of a professional as well considering social media and KZbin or other video production. Being a lot of events such as weddings are indoors the 24mp sensor is on point for low light and small file sizes. Having the Z8-9 focus tracking is like hitting the jackpot in an old school design with an expeed 7 is icing on the cake. Just be sure to get the SD cards that can match the performance. Very good tool offering video and a small walk around camera. Most peoples filing systems will get a sigh of relief on their storage capacity and speed.

Gosh, a good month ago I was reading some spec's and thought.....meh. Then you tick'd off the current spec's and I'm thinking. Dang! Very interesting! Until the SD card slots showed up. This "might" be a deal breaker for me. Still. It does offer up a lot. Now, I'm thinking what will a Z6III offer (other and CFExpress cards). Will there even be an Z6III? Nikon has blurred the lines a lot. A Z7III could offer the CFExpress and larger sensor - and I do like the smaller chassis of the Z6, especially compared to the Z9. The Z8 is big, but doable; smaller would be better. Luckily, at $2k I'll have to think about it. In the mean time I'll wait for production reviews. Also; if they come out with a more robust, updated Z50 - I might be all over that. Even smaller chassis, great little camera, just could use a bit of beefing up.

Has features I want in the Z6III. Pixel shift is a definite plus, as is the fully articulated screen. When you shoot astrophotography that comes in real handy. And I see it has the old screw in shutter release spot also. But still should offer the use of a remote shutter release. It is something I could see myself getting. I can trade in the Z50 and use this as my everyday camera. Like the retro styled look. Black looks great. But I think a Crome top version would look great also in this one. Only down side is Nikon didn’t lock the ibs in the camera so there is a rattle. Sensor cover would have been icing on the cake.

I've had the z6ii for 2 years. And the zfc for about a year. And several pieces of Z glass in between. Idk if I'm in a hurry to drop another 2k on a body, especially with a z6iii/7iii being such an unknown quantity. But man...that thing is exceptional

Perhaps even more significant than this camera release (which is already quite cool) is the fact that this is a new platform. Before, you had the Z30/Z50/Zfc, Z6/Z7 and Z8/Z9: 3 platforms. Maybe the Z7 could be considered separate from the Z6 but it shared a lot as well. But this is not just a Z6 II with Expeed 7 in a new body. There are more AF points than on the Z6 II, better IBIS than on any other Nikon camera, and pixel shift. It actually makes it extremely attractive at this price point. The only "but" I can think of is the inevitable drop in Z6 II sales. :) As a Dutchman, I approve of the orange color. ;)

This looks brilliant, if only I could afford and justify it! I’d prefer a dedicated AF-on button, not too keen on the F stop display and maybe the record button could match the quality of the other dials, but otherwise really impressed. What Nikon could do now is bring out special editions of their 1.8 S-Line primes with the same quality look and feel, but with marked aperture rings (with switch to de-click) and perhaps bring back the scalloped focus ring (in brass, so the finish can develop a patina). I’d then map the front dial to picture profile, to select my ‘film’. Definitely worth a special trip to the shop to have a feel of it in the flesh. 😊
