Since I will mainly be shooting photos with a manual lens, I have some of my own customizations to consider. But Matt has shown me the Path to Greatness by customizing my Sony a7ii. Fun ahead! Thank you, Matt. This was all very helpful!

Hey Matt, I'm developing a LUT that helps to bring Slog2 or Slog3 footage back to normal and matches Canon C100. I think that Canon color science is a lot more pleasing and takes a lot of less work to get it right. Hey man, great video! I have been shooting with my Nikon D750 (originally purchased for photos but I use it for a ton of video now) for the past year and half. I do freelance event shooting (mitzvah parties, weddings, corporate work, etc) as well as lots of cinematography work for my high school. I am part of our broadcast media and video production team, meaning we do both live broadcasting and video production. I am the head of cinematography and video production, and have been using my d750 to shoot everything we need. This includes sports action footage (standing on the sideline of a football field with my nikon 70-200 f2.8 shooting the game for action shots), lots of set interview shots (with my nikon 50mm 1.4 and anamorphic filter, etc), and plenty of run-and-gun shooting on either my glidecam, or handheld, for a variety of different purposes and situations. I enjoy high quality, and currently have a custom gamma curve profile installed on my D750 to capture more dynamic range and detail (sort of emulating a log profile). I do lots of color grading in davinci resolve, and enjoy as much quality and performance as possible. Since I only use additional lights for set interview shots, the rest of my work is done in natural light (lots of high-iso shooting as well). I have been looking at the a7s2 for a while now, thinking it is the perfect camera for me. The only drawback is (of course) the price, and the fact that it can only do 4K in 30 fps, and not 60fps. I feel as though this will impact my normal workflow; I always shoot everything at 60fps on my Nikon, because my editing style includes experimenting with slowing down whatever footage fits best in that moment. What would you recommend? I know the GH5 recently was announced, and the 10-bit, 4:2:2 quality footage is suppossed to be amazing! The only issue is it's still a micro 4/3 sensor and probably doesn't have much better high-iso performance than my Nikon (which does do decent footage up to 1600-3200 max given the full frame sensor). I have an array of Nikon lenses, so I would probably just adapt onto whatever body I decide to go with. Thanks for your help in advance, sorry for the long message!
@whoismatt7 жыл бұрын
+Dakoolguy111 hey! The GH5 looks good on paper but it's probably not going to have much better lowlight performance than the GH4 did. If you want lowlight with good quality, go with the A7sii. I use Nikon lenses with mine and they work great.

Hi Matt, watched all your Sony a7sii videos and loved them! Learned so much from you. Thank you! I hope you may see this question I have about AF-C in movie mode specifically. Do you know if it's possible to "see" the green autofocus confirmation boxes within the screen while filming? Maybe I'm missing a setting, but I can see these detection points when shooting people in photo mode. But when I start to film, I do not see these AF-C points, so I'm not able to tell where the camera is focusing when recording video in AF-C. Is this possible? Thanks a lot!
@whoismatt7 жыл бұрын
+Brian Westfield thanks Brian! Unfortunately no, that's photo only. You can set your autofocus to be a smaller box so your camera will always know where you want it to focus. Change your focus area from wide to one of the tighter options.
@bwest62757 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, thanks for the reply. Sorry I guess I explained my issue wrong. But I found the problem. If you enable 4k video mode "and" dual record, the A7s/Rii can't perform face detection in AF-C. The camera disables this function. If you turn off Dual Rec, then you can record 4K with AF-C face detection (white boxes tracking faces on the screen when recording). I contacted Sony support and asked they open an internal bug to see if this is by design due to HW limitations, or if this is a defect that can be addressed in future FW updates.

Great video's Matt. Today I watched them all four and it really helped me out. No paper tutorial needed anymore. I have just a question. Do I understand right that in Europe we use PAL, and you have set your camera to NTSC? Since I can't find the 30fps etc. And any idea how I can look back the slowmotion files back on my camera? Or can I only see that back in FCP? Great video's, I signed up! Cheers from Amsterdam, Coen
@whoismatt8 жыл бұрын
Hey Coen! You are correct, for Euro broadcast PAL is used. In the US we use NTSC. Both have quite different framerates which is why you don't see 30fps on your camera. I don't use FCPX so I don't think I can be much help with your slow motion files. Take care!

Great videos Matt, thank you so much from Barcelona, Spain! One question! We were setting 2 A7Sii at the same time, and we had a problem with both of them at the same time. Whenever we arrive to the 4th video the batteries of both cameras died. So we turn off the cameras and changed batteries. And the horrible surprise was that both cameras lost some settings we have set. For example, we had lost the Dial settings, number 1 and 2 are not there anymore. The M1 and M2 are still there as we setted. Also, all the custom buttons setup disappear... and had been reset to the original. Do you know if is this normal? Have you heard anyone or it happen something like this sometime? Thank you so much for all your tutorials!
@whoismatt7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That sounds like the camera battery dying caused a total reset of your camera software. Major bummer! This is why I always try to shut down my camera and not let the battery die.
@lucaloku7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt. Now we are more familiar with the camera after working a few days. There are no more problems. But we still have problems with the memories M1 M2 M3 M4, there is no way to keep them well. Our settings disappear every time we turn off the camera, I do not know what we're doing wrong. We will continue to prove. Thank you very much man! Cheers from Barcelona-Spain.

Matt, what video settings do you shoot the weddings ? 4K 24fps 100M ? Or 1080p 60fps and then make it to the 24fps timeline in final cut pro ? I find that, if I shoot at 4K 24fps, then there is no way, I can add the slow mo in post. and if I shoot at 1080p 60fps , then there is a good chance or lowering down speed to 50%, so that the little slow mo effect can be done. But what about the whole ? Does the whole file get slow to 24fps, if we put a 60fps file to a 24fps timeline ?
@whoismatt8 жыл бұрын
Hey! I shoot in a mix of framerates and resolutions. Usually 4K30, 4K24, or 60fps at 1080p. I edit in Premiere, and put everything onto a 24fps timeline. I conform the footage that isn't 24p to 24p.
@JetspotNetworks8 жыл бұрын
So the timeline is 1080p 24fps. What if a client asks 4K film ? Sony A7 doesnt do slow mo at 4K. What cam do you use for that ?

Hi Matt WhoisMatt Johnson, wondering if you know how to set the A7SII to DO NOT create Thumbnails for clips? When I batch transcode with Media Encoder the Thumbnails (stills) get transcoded too and I would like to avoid that by not having the Thumbnails on the first place. Thanks!
@whoismatt7 жыл бұрын
Hey Carla! I don't believe you're able to change this setting. As a workaround, I usually sort my video clips after copying them from my memory card. The sorting lets me select only the video files. I can then copy all the thumbnails to a second folder so they stay out of my proxies.

Looking at your video I just had a revelation. If I trim your beard I am pretty sure you will look nice. The why want to be ugly, just wait to get old then you can let that beard grow to cover your face. By the way your video really helped me.
