Welcome back to the latest instalment of my KSP 2 playthrough for beginners series. Today, we tackle the Duna Monument mission, which demands us to navigate to a very secluded and mysterious buried monument to a very lovecraftian cthulu-style monster! What could this mean!?

I can start a new playthrough in KSP 1 with colonies, interstellar and even multiplayer if I want to. But I don't really want to. Because I know that after a while the game will run like crap even on my good PC, I will be quite limited in terms of how big I can make my ships lest I tolerate having 1 FPS, and I won't have any objectives other than the ones I set for myself, and I'll get bored. KSP 2 just had to solve these basic issues. It just had to look better, run better, get rid of the soft joint system that limits you in terms of number of parts, and provide good modding tools. That's it. That would have made it better than KSP 1, all the rest, the colonies and stuff, is extra and shouldn't have been prioritized over the technical side of the game.

@@GodzillaJawzyep this is what is so confusing about the doom and gloom. Matt still hasn't gone to all the monuments and regardless of the shut down he CAN DO THAT right now...and it's not just him it's ALL the big Kerbal KZbinrs. Don't they realize that they could finish the exploration mode, add the mod that adds funds in and boom! Season 2 but now it's career mode. Then finish that and add Probes Before Crew which changes around the tech tree and BOOM! Season 3. They could legitimately play this game for more than a year without ever losing steam on doing something new. And if big youtubers would do that it would let the community know that they didn't waste their money because there's fun to be had. If the community is happy then the modders will mod and bring all those missing features to the game. Giving up as a community is what kills this game. If you don't actually enjoy the game then definitely stop playing it, do what makes you happy. But if you actually DID enjoy the game then just keep enjoying it! It doesn't matter if it is "complete" if you are having fun. Sorry for the rant but please @mattlowne just think about it. Quitting early, especially when you don't have to would be a shame. Just remember that you and this game does have fans. Not EVERYBODY is a hater and if you only cater to the haters than that's all you will ever do. There's a community here that will watch and support you. Don't forget that.

@@patricktho6546 We know that they are closing the seattle office. Which is the intercept games office who developed KSP2. We know that they are laying of 70 employees, and there's only 76 employees listed in the credits for KSP2. The only way in which KSP2 actually gets large feature updates going forward (and not tiny bugfixes like once a year for a bit by a skeleton crew of devs). Is if another studio continues the development of KSP2. I don't see them passing KSP2 to another studio to develop given it's still in a rough state and only has a few 100 players. It's niche unfortunately. Even more niche when the game itself barely works and is pretty featureless, the number of people who want a realistic space simulator, have a powerful PC that can run it and who are willing to put up with a game that's super buggy and incomplete is slim. It's very sad, but it's highly likely that development on KSP2 will end in 2 months when the layoffs happen.

Quick and easy workaround for the 0m dV bug: Move the engine to a different stage. For some reason KSP 2 loves to "attach" the fuels dV to a decoupler stage, so moving the engine into the decoupler stage will make it "pick up" the dV and then you can move it back into its own stage and it'll take the dV readout with it.
@robinpatenall38
@robinpatenall38 Ай бұрын
If you are suffering from the no dV issue, one potential fix is to add a stage by clicking on one of the green plus buttons that appear when you mouse over the staging diagram. This forces a dV recalculation and can fix the issue. Making sure that you staging is right is also a good idea.

Matt, I highly encourage you since Ksp 2 didnt deliver on its promises of Interstellar travel and colonies. To try out a few different mods that all add the features that this game promised. Mainly Extraplanetary launchpads (adds the ability to build rockets on the surface of planets through colony buidlings), USI (its a collection of mods that when all combined offer colony parts, planetary and orbital logistics and optionally life support systems) as for interstellar travel there are a number of options. There is a wiki about Kopernicus (kopernicus is the plugin that enables different planets and solar systems) that lists to my knowledge all known planet packs. As for propulsion ive heard that Far Future Technologies is really good. Other than that everything else is personal preference. I encourage you to look up other mods to try out and see what you like. I myself have a modpack of 143 mods that work pretty well together and offer most of had ksp 2 promised. Minus interstellar travel because im not interested in my current playthrough.

I'm happy that the "suits" pulled the plug; the game is deeply flawed in its fundamentals -- for colonies and multiplayer to work you would likely need a x100 performance improvement (e.g. instead of one 100 part ship, you have 1000 part colonies with 10 players). Why would anyone want to burn money in an open fire? Now the IP is (hopefully) again free and maybe after the stink of Nates filthy hands has gone they can find a more competent studio to build KSP3
@agsystems8220
@agsystems8220 Ай бұрын
The problem was that it was all polish. The particle and atmospheric effects are beautiful, this monument is gorgeous, and the mission control is intricate. The underlying systems are not any better than KSP 1, and in many ways worse, which was the whole reason for the rewrite. It seems like the execs thought this would be a case of dropping some high quality assets on 3rd party unity systems with some tweaking and they would be good to go, which is absolutely not the case. It always concerned me that the creative director seemed to be the front man. KSP is a systems driven game so development needs to be systems driven. I have nothing against Nate, and fully believe he is committed to the game, but as a creative guy I don't think he has any idea what makes KSP hard to create. It isn't incompetence, his skill set was just completely wrong for running this project.

@@JohnnyJakuleg you don't know how any of this works, do you ? the IP is not free, it's going to be shoved into a box forever serving only to pad the networth of the company that owns it. maybe in a few years they will do something stupid with it so they can say they are using the IP to protect their ownership, but that is it, the IP is dead. it's even funnier because the problem with the game wasn't Nate or the other devs, it was the "suits". they took the project from a completely different team after an hostile take over, then handed it to them even though they had zero experience on anything similar and then expected them to release the game on the same timetable as the first team. OF COURSE the game will be broken and barely playable, they had to take the project of a completely different team mid development and figure out how everything worked, they had no idea what they were doing, and couldn't even have the time to actually figure out how to make a good game out of it because the parent company wanted it out.
@JohnnyJakuleg

@@danilooliveira6580 Sure IP remains at T2, but with no active project and likely no intent to make one after this disaster I hope they might sell it to someone more competent. "completely different team": nope, always Nate. he/his former company pitched the game to T2, never delivered but then wanted to sell the company to T2; T2 refused and created a new studio making the huge mistake to poach Nate and the team from the original company instead of starting from scratch. One thing is for sure: Nate can sell himself and his "visions" not only to the general public, but also to the suits. Finally, it was Nate speaking / lying to the public -- wasn't he having a lot of fun playing the multiplayer version already 2021 or so?

In principle Nate and the team seem to have gotten 4 to 5 chances to fix thing: Nate at Star Theory, Nate at IG with full release _he_ announced. Release as EA instead of a full release gave him another year, then Science (where we saw the first time _something_ but order of magnitudes away from what it is needed) and now colonies (where the suits might have finally realized this as a lost cause). So he did not have to adhere to the original timeline, but to the original one + 4 years(!) - more than double the amount Nate & team thought they would need at Star Theory for everything from scratch

That was seriously planed to fail right at the beginning.

@@OzoneGrif They are laying off 70 staff, which means it had 70 staff. That doesn't scream 'minimum cost'*. I am not convinced it is entirely dead either. They have several million dollars worth of assets already built and ready to go. Getting rid of most of the staff means they don't want several million dollars more assets, not that they are chucking what they already have. The content production is years ahead of the systems, and you can't make the systems development faster by just throwing more staff at it. Best thing at this point is to have 2-3 really good systems guys getting the foundational systems right over a couple of years, then use the assets that are already built once the systems have caught up. I could well believe they could get the extra ~50,000 sales over the next 3 years required to justify a staff that size. The existing assets and trickle of revenue will probably be enough to get a small team bankrolled, even if they are only aiming for a proper release in 3 years. * 70 people is probably ~$4 million per year. At $25 average revenue per sale (optimistic), that would require 160,000 sales per year. It has been in development for years already, so has probably burned through more than $10 million. There is no way it has been anything but a massive loss.

8:30 "so inefficient" man when i played kerbal (the first one didnt get the second one thankfully) my strategy was to build gigantic rockets for everything with a bunch of stages and just go anywhere, i think my finaly design i used for most things had something like 15,000 seconds of delta v WHEN IN ORBIT of kerbin, since i play science mode there was no consequence for giant crafts and most of the time i didnt even send experiments home i just used the data transmission ability with a probe core. ill probably download it again and try not to brute force it this time.

Me too. I played KSP1 so much and did the same missions over and over that the only thing that could rekindle my interest was a robust colonization addition. It was possible with mods in KSP1 but none of them were as good as I hoped. And then there was the fact the kraken hated complex systems sitting on a planet. I was so excited we might get something this year but it's looking doubtful. At a minimum, hopefully they'll release what they've got and smash a few of the bigger bugs before closing the book on the game.

Good challenge idea: The Impossiblest Thing or whatever. Do this challenge day 40-ish idk I lost count... The goal of the challenge is to collect as many points as possible. It is done in a fresh science mode save. The challenge is done in 3 steps: *1. Before the challenge begins:* Before the challenge begins, you will need to get the settings for it. You can even choose multiple at a time. They can't be broken but they will reward you by multiplying the score at the end of the challenge. +X% means that X% of the total score will be added to it. All percentages are summed up first before applying Hardcore mode (if you kill a Kerbal you lose all of your points, no quicksaves are allowed): +100% Quicksaveless (already applies if Hardcore mode is active but without the additional reward for it, you CAN die, but still, no quicksaves): +30% One ton at a time (every rocket needs to weigh at most 1000 tons): +50% Absurd introvertism (you only have one Kerbal, if he dies, another one replaces them): +70% Forgot the thingy (no docking allowed): +30% *2. During the challenge* The points are scored for landing on the celestial body and returning back to Earth. Each celestial body weighs a specific amount of points: Eve: 280 Moho: 245 Tylo: 235 Laythe: 210 Vall: 200 Bop: 190 Pol: 175 Eeloo: 165 Dres: 155 Ike: 145 Duna: 140 Gilly: 130 Minmus: 120 The Mun: 110 Kerbin (you need to get to space, land, get to space again and land again, all within one launch): 1000 The points will only be earned if a kerbal lands on the celestial body and goes back to Kerbin (a robotic spaceship doesn't count!). If the Kerbal dies on the way back after landing on the body, you will lose half of all the potential points it could've scored if the rocket would've gotten back to Kerbin, for example if you land on Vall and then crash on your way back, you will not gain the 200 points from that launch and only lose 100 points (except if you revert that). You will also lose 35 points each time you upgrade in the tech tree. *3. After the challenge:* You may stop the challenge any time as long as no Kerbal is in space. The points are multiplied by the conditions you chose in the beginning. If your points are negative, you have lost the challenge. If you are good enough you will get a medal (just a trackmania Easter egg) 🏅 2986 points (my PB) 🥇 2700 points 🥈 2400 points 🥉 2100 points

All 70 devs for KSP2 have been laid off by Take Two, who's only office is in Seattle, which also happens to be where those only 70 people are. I don't know what's happening with KSP2, but I hope everything works out well for you, Matt. If KSP2 is dead, I kind-of want to suggest Juno. Everyone (including me) says it's harder, but straightforward rockets might actually easier than in KSP. I put together one the other day and _accidentally an SSTO!_ lol And Matt, how about building spaceship interiors? Juno has seats, displays, and parts which are meant to be shaped into other things. The displays are meant to be scripted though. Matt at Kerbin: "The heatshields in this game are overpowered, we'll be fine!" Matt anywhere else: "Aerobraking is for newbs!" 🤣It's characterful! I actually built a ship to go to Eeloo and back without aerobraking or gravity assists. Didn't fly it though; my health went into decline again. I wanted to video it, but IDK. I've got a feeling I should look into meds for bipolar mood disorder before I start making videos. I needed a radial-out burn for the exact same reason the last time I flew a rocket. I think that was in Juno. "Ike Eek"? You're making me think of building an Ike base because my name's eekee. ;) I normally think of Eeloo. Blunderbirds come back! :D We could say Val & Bob were on a long-term research mission. IDK

There are so many negative comments, so I want to help with the other perspective. Nobody has actually said that this game will stop being developed, and there are a lot of possible ways for it to continue being developed, either by the same team or a different one. I'm still hopeful that we'll get the future major roadmap updates, and we at least have confirmation that it isn't immediately being killed, because they have stated that KSP2 will continue receiving updates for at least a bit longer. Even if we don't get those future updates, the current game doesn't look too bad, it's just nowhere near feature complete. If we learn that it is completely killed, I'll be annoyed/sad as well, but until that happens I'm going to stay positive and assume it will still be developed. Hopefully there's some other people who share that perspective :)
