Great video! I worked on this game earlier in my career another interesting tidbit : Activision really wanted us to push the Rush hour angle so bad they hired the director Brett Ratner to come to the studio and “help with the game “ and by that we mean he made a lot of insane suggestions about shit to add into the game that made zero sense for the tone of the game we were trying to make. Of course we didn’t act on any of it and it definitely harmed the relationship with Activision. This game got very little attention but I’m glad people that played it loved and appreciated it flaws and all because we really believed in it and saw it through to the end

12:54 Square Enix has a long history on blowing ungodly amounts of money on the PR department with launch parties, expensive dining, and every other unnecessary expenditure you could imagine and then blaming the lack of profit on the game not selling, despite the numbers being decent in any other context. I actually was in the Triad Wars closed beta, and I wasn't super impressed by it. When I first started playing it, they had managed to merely transplant the gameplay from the original game into a format more suited to mobile games, where you had to wait several hours for your burgeoning criminal empire to upgrade and fights largely consisted of the same base assault done over and over again. What made it even more boring was the fact that if you brought the basic pistol with you on those missions, you could headshot every single enemy (including the boss) and easily win, making the whole game cycle feel super weak. I stopped playing after about a week of this. Smash cut to about 3-4 months later, and I decide to boot it back up again to see what's changed. A lot, as it turned out: they had implemented a LEVEL-BASED power system that solved the difficulty problem by making your basic Level 1 starting pistol incapable of taking down the Level 10 thugs beating you down. Couple that with aggressive micro-transactions (I remind everyone that this game was still in CLOSED BETA), and it's clear in retrospect that SE's GaaS dealings far pre-dated Avengers. I stopped playing for good soon afterward, but not before encountering a hilarious bug where I crashed a car into the interior corner of a building and got flung out straight through the wall and out of bounds.

Awesome video Matt! I don’t have any insight into why SE set the targets they did for the Eidos acquisitions but I always felt they were far too lofty. Have you considered doing anything on Hitman Absolution? The development of that was an interesting mess to follow at the time (firing and rehiring voice actors, changing established style to match Kane & Lynch, etc) and while it built on the momentum of previous games to sell better than any of them, I’m pretty sure the brand damage caused by cynical attempts to make the franchise more cinematic and marketable played a role in IO’s rebooting Hitman 2016 and its subsequent poor sales. I’d love to know why it wound up being so radically different... Further info not mentioned in the vid re: Triad Wars is that the game was cancelled very far into development, UF conceded after beta testing that it just wasn’t fun to play which was understandable considering it seemed to be built around trending buzzwords at the time like “F2P” and “microtransactions” (I think they were even intending to charge for firearm ammo?). They also had a comically disastrous Reddit AMA where they gave smarmy PR-spun answers to things they knew would be unpopular, like omitting playable female characters for vague reasons.

Thank you for using Arashi no Saxophone from KoF 95. One of my favorites. I still have the game for PS1

This game was everything back in the day. I was so sad that the sequel never happened

Comatose Canines deserves a sequel after managing to survive working with Activision mostly unscathed.

This probably the most underrated game of all time in my opinion. I was 7 years old when this game came out and I enjoyed every single second of this. It’s a damn shame that this game never got a sequel. Combat: 10/10 Story: 9/10 Shooting: 8/10 Soundtrack: 9/10 Sadly we will never see sleeping dogs 2

Underated master peace and I wish there was a more content, but based on the story line it would be super hard to make a part 2 because there wasn't really anything to continue on.

Absolutely LOVED this game! It’s definitely in my Top 10 games thanks to its fighting mechanics within the open world sandbox alongside its full embrace of Chinese culture and extended DLC support. Totally underrated! 💪🏽

One thing that surprised me about this game was the fact that it initially was meant to be a soft reboot for the true crime series that started on ps2.

I straight up loved this game! Rough ending, but it did enough different to stand out from GTA.

I love Sleeping Dogs. One of the most underrated games out there, and it's a damn shame that we won't get a sequel.

Sleeping dogs at the time filled a void in my life and I'm glad it exists. It came at the right time and it holds a special spot in my heart.

This game was better than GTA and Saints Row. I will die on this hill.

For a sec I was gonna say why would this game need a “what happun” when it performed perfectly well at the time but then after watching the video I remembered why what happened behind the game.

I still listen to the soundtrack of this great game.
