This video game made me read the poem Dante's Inferno back in the day and boy it was a treat to see how different these were. My favorite was when Vergil kicked the shit out of cerberus for getting too close to Dante of whom was wetting his pants in fear of the demon. That's basically the sukkary of Dante's Inferno. Vergil kicking the shit out of things and Dante going heart eyes at how amazing his senpai is. You know, whenever he isn't busy being an Angry Italian and yelling at people while Vergil holds his earrings.

Don't forget early on when they're in Limbo and Dante is ramping up his self-insert fanfiction by talking to all the Greek and Roman philosophers he's a huge fan of, and being told by them that he's also super cool and smart and handsome, and then they proceed to fight each other shirtless in the rain.

I feel over the course of this playthrough it will be important to mention that Dante's Inferno (and all of the divine comedy) is the equivalent of Biblical and Catholic Fanfiction. Dante mainly made all this shit up himself and injected many of his own biases into his story, which is why Vergil is so important because Dante loved Vergil.

Roman Catholic here, Dante's inferno is actually deeply frowned upon by the church due to his liberties when using greek mythology and for his embellishment of the pagan religions at the time (Trajan was in heaven for some weird reason) in addition to privately placing political rivals in hell, displaying an inherent narrative bias. Although never outright banned by the church, it wasn't exactly advertised as a "must read" if you know what I mean.
@sinistropteryx31136 жыл бұрын
It was also way more of a political satire than a theological work. That’s why Dante had specific punishments for different sins, it was basically so he could accuse people he didn’t like of those things by putting them in certain circles.

I'm guessing this isn't the kind of game where _killing Death_ will have any lasting ontological repercussions. Like, that didn't seem to prevent people from dying or anything, if the crowd lining up for the Charon trip is any indication. The Crusades probably would have taken a very different path in history if everyone just...stopped dying in the middle of the First Siege of Acre, for no obvious reason.

Matt's Shade Notes: Pontius Pilate was the man who condemned Jesus to death. He tried to abate the crowd by giving them a notorious criminal to crucify instead but for some reason they really wanted that Jesus blood so he give in to the crowd. The phrase my hands are clean or my hands are tied likely come from him. Elektra didn't really kill her mother she conspired with her brother who did kill their mother. Their mother killed their father beforehand mostly as a power play. Their entire family had a history with kinslaying, but they are usually thought to have made it right, their trilogy of plays are likely one of the originators for the word dilemma. Honestly Elektra deserved to be saved more then Pilate. Speaking of good pagans in hell. Yes, if you do not accept Jesus into your heart you go to hell that's the Bible, that's the Divine Comedy with like one pseudo exception. There's the brakes. It's the biggest reason I am not religious anymore. In the Divine Comedy proper, the babies are implied to be asleep or doing baby things not unholy blade arm lil death machines. The rest of the good pagans like Hector chill in Limbo which is like a giant Starbucks. It's not the best but it's the best in hell and there's great conversation. Presumably they can rest and eat and do Starbucks things. Jesus might come and save them all after the apocalypse, maybe depends on the interpretation.

In Christian Theology, the Harrowing of Hell is the time period from when Christ died to when he rose, & was in Hell for the sins of the world. This is when everyone in hell would be exposed to the Gospel, & rescued from torment. So anyone in Hell got their chance (Adam & Eve are venerated as Saints, for example). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrowing_of_Hell Pilate, as an eyewitness observer or one who heard their accounts, would have likely had an earthly chance to be saved. Electra would have had to wait for the Harrowing. Anyways, "If life was fair we'd all be in Hell." - Doug Wilson. Sorry for necro-ing an ancient comment, just thought it was relevant & important.

17:00 Cool Bible Fact: The Mark of Cain was actually a sign of protection by the Lord and a warning to other men to _not_ punish Cain for committing murder/fratricide...because He wanted Cain _alllll to Himself_ for that one, when the time came. Anyone who killed Cain would suffer seven times as much punishment in turn. According to some traditions, this part of the curse was passed down to Cain's children, and its magnitude increased _exponentially_ with each new generation. Good thing the only survivors of the Great Flood were blood of Seth, right?

Inferno Facts #2 In the original poem, the first layer of Hell was... kind of not really that Hellish. Yeah, they it was more boring than anything else because it was supposed supposed to represent Limbo. People sit around, occasionally cry about not living a good enough life, and it's just kind of dull. The area of the 'virtuous pagan's is even its own city that naturally includes all of Dante Alighieri's favorite poets and historical figures; Homer, Ovid, Hector, Aeneas, Julius Caesar, and, ironically for this game, Saladin. Also in the original poem, Charon explicitly does not want to let Dante onto his ferry since Dante is still alive. Vergil basically has to bully Charon onto letting them through, and Dante faints from terror like a Victorian novel protagonist. This is also weirdly not the first time King Minos has shown up in an action RPG. In Greek mythology, Minos was appointed as one of the three judges of the underworld by Hades, Aeacus and Rhadamanthus (aka two other guys that nobody really cares about because they didn't get a monster named after them and their dad wasn't Zeus shapeshifted into a bull). The three are shown in statue form in God of War 3.
@Iamafishproductions6 жыл бұрын
The fact that the first layer of Hell is where all the virtuous pre-Christians go makes Orpheus' line when you save him kind of hilarious. He mentions how Elysium is so beautiful as he's being saved, despite the fact that since Limbo and Elysium are essentially the same place, he should just be waiting on the boat to get off at the first stop.

Hey Matt. I realize you making this, even doing it alone, is comparable to Woolie doing the Reboot game and bringing people into it, except everyone has refused to aid you with your thing. So it's that much harder. Plus Woolie had people helping him and he turned that thing into a podcast for a bit. And...like...that makes it extremely clear that you must have a lot of drive to do this LP and talk about the aspects of Dante's Inferno to you that are good or worth conversing and looking at and sharing with people....without anyone next to you while playing all of it. Cause you've been trying for some time now. I just wanted to let you know that I see that drive and effort. And hopefully other people see that too with you and the people out there that do this stuff. Cause it tells me all three of you aren't taking what you've got for granted and are taking advantage of your place to be able to say, "Hey this is the thing I'm interested in." And like Woolie likes to point out: Not everyone follows the rock star into the thing that no one cares about, they normally just demand Freebird again and again. And while you won't always do things that interest me, I have some respect for people who are honest about what interests them, even in the face of no one doing the thing with you and facing the inferno alone. Really looking forward to this LP that I would never play myself cause Dead Space was more my jam.

Possible spoilers for the game, but there’s a reason Dante can absolve or punish souls in the Divine Comedy: In the Divine Comedy Dante is alive, which carries a couple advantages. One of which is that if a living person prays for the soul of someone trapped in hell or Purgatory then it will actually earn them good karma points and will advance them ever so slowly up the circles and closer to heaven. Btw this is the only way those damned in hell can ever hope to improve their lot (Unless Jesus gives them a personal pardon) so hopefully they made some good friends. After you get to Purgatory you actually get the agency to work off the rest of your sins yourself for a few....hundred or thousand years. Can’t remember any specific examples but there’s multiple times when Dante is talking to a soul and at the end of the exchange he agrees to pray for their souls salvation and they get a moment of relief.

Putting Dante's writing right next to Visceral's was not a good idea. The whiplash is outrageous. I paused the game to type this, so no idea if the game gets around to mentioning it, but the souls suffering outside Hell (the place this game calls Limbo, though the poem doesn't, not that it matters) are out there specifically because they're the lifelong opportunists, people who never took sides in great conflicts or else switched sides as it suited them, ultimately always looking out for number one. They make an interesting parallel to the traitors, who are down in the very lowest parts of Hell. Virgil says these opportunists aren't allowed in Hell because then the rest of the damned could gloat over how pathetic these guys are. Dante hated them more than he hated traitors, which is impressive, considering treachery is how his political movement got shut down.
