Don't get me wrong, I dislike many things in Dante's Inferno, but there's also certain aspects I enjoy that I'll get to when I come across them. There's a few of the circles I think are pretty cool, and there's some very specific designs that work, so it's not all doom and gloom. That being said, it's still a mediocre god of war rip off, I think that's pretty clear to everyone with eyes.

I think the reason Matt keeps saying "I don't know why" is because, even though a lot of stuff is explained throughout the game, it's not explained very well. Also, a lot of stuff is edgy symbolism. Like, why Hell is under a church is symbolic of how the church are lying, sinful assholes, or the reason why Death begged for his life is symbolic Dante's own weaknesses since (SPOILER) Dante is dead anyway and nothing he does will save him. It's like a more subtle DmC and I think this game suffers from the whole every level is a setpiece problem.

Watching this game for the first time, I can say that one thing that definitely doesn't help to make the narrative any clearer is their on and off usage of quotes from the book. It's very rare that technique actually works, and in this case it just feels supremely lazy to copy-paste dialogue without having to write something new. Where it muddles the narrative is that this is telling a completely different story from the book, so there are scenes like the crusades and his wife getting down with the devil where they're talking in a completely different language from when he's meeting Virgil-not-that-Virgil, because the former has nothing to do with the original Dante-not-that-Dante's story. And by introducing Virgil-not-that-Virgil with nothing but lines from his introduction in the book, we're not actually told who he is, what connection he has to Beatrice, why Dante knows who he is, or how Beatrice asked for his help in what seemed to be the middle of her getting down with the devil. It's saying a lot when I think that this game could learn a lot from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet.

Beatrice Portinari, who's the person thought to be Dante's Beatrice, was basically the same age as him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatrice_Portinari Btw, yeah, the Comedy is pretty much a huge tirade against some people of the time, but it's also much more. It contains four parallel interpretations: the literal one, the allegorical one, the moral one and the anagogical one. Let me tell you, as someone who (tried to) read the Comedy, it's a big clusterfuck if you don't know the ins and outs of the italian ecclesiastic and political scene of the time - and I _live_ in Florence, can't imagine who doesn't even speak the language. But it also kickstarted a revolution in european literature, when latin was still the primary "official" language with which the vast majority of manuscripts were written. Both mine and your message would probably be very different hadn't the Comedy had that kind of influence.

Because Woolie is too much of a coward and would probably get it wrong anyway: Inferno Facts #1 The Gates of Hell that Dante forces open in the beginning here are obviously based off of The Gates of Hell by Auguste Rodin. Rodin actually based his sculpture explicitly off of Dante Alighieri's text, and worked on the sculpture from 1880 until his death in 1917. The Gates are incredibly detailed, encapsulating a variety of locations and characters from Dante's Inferno, and there are no less than 180 individual figures on the door. Rodin and his sculpture would reach the pinnacle of artistic recognition when they became references in Bayonetta. Also, it goes without saying, but though there were a lot of bizarre and macabre displays of faith in the middle ages, including flagellation and contested relics like the foreskin of Christ, it's unlikely anyone sewed tapestry into their skin. (I have actually had people ask me about this.)

One thing I find rather funny about Dante's animations in this, is how they actually look a lot better with his normal ass halberd than with the death scythe. It doesn't bend all over the place which makes the attacks look more satisfying, and it has way better proportion to his own size...
