Done - thanks mate, works perfectly! If you're in the UK, you might find that there are only 2 wires when you remove the covering from the 3.5 jack. If you look closely though, there will be some copper wiring running separately alongside each of the audio wires. These are the grounding wires. You can twist these together, and solder them to the grounding point. Just make sure these stay separate to the audio wires going to points 13 and 14.

I have seen this video years ago, and only just now I installed the jack output. It works great! Somehow I mixed up the left and right sides at first... I am quite sure I connected the pin #13 to the tip of the jack which is supposed to be the left side. Anyway I just unsoldered and inverted the sides. I can't thank you enough Matt! It feels so great to beat programmed obsolescence, especially for high end stuff like this! Greetings from Brussels!

Worked great! Thanks so much for the tutorial. Was a PITA soldering them but I finally got it. I used a 2.2K ohm resistor from Radio Shack. I bought a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable and it had the left and right sheathed wires inside with the ground surrounding the 2 wires. I just bunched up all the ground wires and made them one.

Fantastic Video! I purchased a cable with a female 30 pin connector on one end and 3.5mm male on the other. Only costs a few bucks on Amazon; however, it did not work with by 1st gen sounddock. I pried open the female connector end of the cable (the 30 pin) and used the info in your video to make the cable functional. It took adding a small ground wire, de-soldering a factory resistor and soldering in a new resistor, but now works great. Sincerest thanks for this video!!

Update. There are 2 different types of Sounddock 1 called A & B. Sounddock 1A has a firewire charging voltage of 12V for early ipods and 1B has a 5V charging voltage for later ipods. Both models look the same and you can only tell the difference from the serial numbers. Iaw the Apple pin notation pin 18 (Bose pin numbers are different) is a pin providing an ipod output of 3.3V to switch the Bose on (same both early and late versions). I'm not sure where or how the 2Kohm resistor was determined in the above video. From my own experience for Version 1A to drop the 12V wirewire voltage to 3.3V the resistor needed was 390Kohm. A 2Kohm resistor sends nearly 10V down thw 3.3V rail!. Form version 1B to drop the 5V charging voltage down to 3.3V the size of resistor is 6.75Kohm. There also would appear to be a common problem with 1A where the firewire voltage is actually 17V, this is clearly far higher than it should be and may contribute to the 1A failure rate.
@gavowassy7655
@gavowassy7655 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this I've just ordered a 390k resistor... I think I saw Matt comment a few posts ago saying the mod lasted 4years... Maybe down to the wrong resistor
@paulbowditch7511
@paulbowditch7511 3 жыл бұрын
From others comments I beleive there is some form of modification to the 1A model to do what I dont know and have not been able to find any details. Supplying 17V down the 12V rail is really not a very good design concept for the docked ipod or iphone.

@gavowassy7655
@gavowassy7655 Жыл бұрын
@@GotoAmar hi, no loud humming noise maybe just a noise when the I plug in and out a device, but I try and remember to power off the dock before disconnecting.. Definitely nothing heard during music playback etc.. I think the resistor from memory is just to trick the dock into thinking an ipod is connected, just double check your connections and quality of your soldering in case there is a dry joint.. Also check the power supply cable is pushed in correctly (it should only fit in one way but it can be defeated)

My 2cents, because I'm so happy and grateful that I want to help a little. I wasn't able to find a resistor, so I dig a little and learn about the colors, gladly I found one in an old DVD that matched colors exactly like the one used in the video, but others will also work. Just check the colors of the one you have and if is close in value it will work (there are online calculators to match colors with ohms value). The other thing was that the audio wire I bought (not male, but female plug) had diferent wire colors (red, blue, green and copper), after some more digging I found that red=right=pin13, blue=left=pin14, and the other 2 green+copper=ground=pin 24 (I jointed this 2 together and soldered both to pin 24). I then made a hole for the female plug right next to the place to put the iPhone. It looks like if the Bose came like this from the factory.I can't find a Bluetooth adapter I once bought, but I'm pretty sure it will also work once I find it, thanks to that resistor (if someone has already tested this, please let me know).The sound is perfect.THANKS MATT MIKKA. Greetings from Colombia

What about solder an audio female input instead a male one and make a hole on the back of the dock station, close to the power supply in, like the second version of this same dock station? Do you think this would be possible? So you wouldn't have a cable hanging always from your dock station and you could plug a male-male jack to your phone and dock station as a normal "Line in" like all the rest of the speakers :) (I'm asking because I don't really know if this is possible or if I'm talking s&$t)
