If restoring a vehicle, especially a old one, this to me would be the best way to do the cleaning process. Virtually no damage to parts that could be difficult to find. Not to mention the cleanliness of the process. Environmentally this is a game changer‼️ Excited to see the end results. 👍✌️☮️

Matt/Scott this is a ton of fun to watch for me as I've just acquired an E36 M3 myself and I'm in this area lately. I'll be honest, I've done enough mineral spirits scrubbing under these areas on a few BMWs to see where it'd be more cost effective, if less "fun" than this method, but in areas like that rear diff cover and brake calipers/rubber/hoses and fittings no contest, this is the way! But Cosmoline will certainly come off pretty easily with a soft brush, even scotchbrite pad and mineral spirits pretty easily. The stuff will be super hard and tough to remove wherever it is exposed to a lot of heat, though. Strangely, having said that, the aluminum heat shields right next to exhaust will actually come clean easily with rags and mineral spirits. But it sure won't on aluminum intake manifolds. I suspect a lot of that is about the smoothness and pores in the aluminum it's resting on..As Scott said over again-you just never know! I'm curious what can be done with the Dry Ice cleaning on an intake manifold of an 80's BMW with cosmoline baked on.

Nice! I’m literally under my E36 M3 doing some suspension and cleaning again. I’ve got degreasers, dawn & water, pressure washer, steamer, sponges, steel wool, brown scotch brite... if I had that thing I could do the aluminum parts and subframes in a second! I’ve got my rear subframe out for bushing and I’ve been cleaning it for hours. Spent 30 minutes cleaning the diff and polished the rear housing but it probably doesn’t look as good as that. It's too bad it can't really be used for the heat shield - I found that fine wire wheels work awesome on them (easier when out of the car). The main heat shield for E36 is about $275 if ever wanted to replace. Maybe I’ll target certain areas and take it in somewhere to have a couple hours of dry ice done.

Ok. Metallurgy and chemistry is my bag, ladies. He is absolutely correct. Any metal on the Rockwell hardness scale (iron) that used compression in Mandrel bends generates heat. The heat on the radius pulls the ferrous compound generating etching. The etching leaves a deposit of iron sulfate. Geez, I sound like a Ted Talks.

Scott, I’ve watched straight though to part 3. Oddly satisfying to watch. Would like to do it myself. On the diff, any concerns about the gasket between the cover and housing? Also when you say back it down it appears that is particle size and pressure. How do you know how to move each?

It's a learned experience as you might imagine. And yes, size of the dry ice, pressure, and volume all play into this of course.

Where does the contaminants go? If it's into the air, shouldn't some kind of face mask / respirator be worn?

@ScottAles3 жыл бұрын
It can be done 10 times faster with no regard to originality. How long does it take to dig a 20' deep hole with an excavator? Not long, right? What if there are archeological artifacts in that space? Takes a little longer. Matt's not paying for this extended example. We both agreed to show the preservation element of the process for those who want to know. His money is safe. And I always take even longer on my own cars.
