There is a huge difference between what happened in Australia to Monaco. Gasly rejoined the track and took out another competitor. Unfortunately that competitor happened to be his teammate. In Monaco, Ocon knew exactly who he was trying to overtake. The first was an accident and the second was considered.

Good points! I agree and disagree. I agree that the two situations were very different. But I disagree in how they were different. Australia was a racing incident, sure. But Monaco, lap 1 is basically where the finishing order is decided, outside of quali. Pierre left the door open, was surprised that Ocon didn't stick to their pre-arrangement, and decided to not back out. "If you don't go for a gap..." is very overused, but it's so valid here. What do you think?
@doorhandle9296 ай бұрын
There is a huge difference yes, Gasly was on 10 penalty points back then and had every reason to not be a total idiot and smash into any other car, let alone his teammate, and he absolutely totalled both cars which cost the team money that was directed to upgrading the car, which in part gave birth to the monstrosity that is this year's Alpine.
@paperplane-db8qf6 ай бұрын
There is a huge difference in points lost also. And there is also a pre-arrangement of not crashing into your teammates every race. Not rejoining the track like an idiot by cutting across the entire track after a standing start. Gasly incident was just significantly worse than Ocons in every possible way. Except that the driver the fans hate was responsible for Monaco but was taken out in Australia.

Australia for me is not under the same umbrella purely because, it was the final lap therefore it's pretty much maximum risk especially considering they got luck with a points opportunity. IMO benching Ocon is the best long-term solution for Alpine. Sure, Ocon is beating Gasly in qualifying and you could say both are equal in skill but removing him future proofs the team. Not only you bring in Jack but Alpine will also have someone with a ton of experience mentoring young drivers in Gasly. This season is already a wash so dropping Ocon allows them to change gears and begin training their new rookie driver and setting up for 2025. Not to mention, that it has been years since Ocon has been in the sport and still hasn't learned that you don't crash into your teammate, still has an attitude problem, and he has been publicly saying that he is still a Mercedes driver which damages the Alpine brand.

"1" means nothing because performance can slip or grow on a dime. "2" is just flat out false and wrong. "3" is just your opinion which means nothing.

Yo, if driver contracts need to explicitly state that there might be consequences for LITTEREALLY DOING EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID NOT TO then this sport needs to change. The drivers drive team cars. They need to be accountable to the team.

I agree the contracts are gonna determine if this will happen but I also think that based off what we know about most of the other driver contracts the Team usually has significantly more power than the driver, think of every RB racer ever. Kyvat dropped, Albon dropped, Gasly dropeped, De Vries dropped. If Alpine is really sure that Ocon won't continue with them after the end of the year then I am not sure what they lose by benching him and recruiting Mick Schumacher early, as has been rumoured, or give Doohan a chance to prove himself. There is certainly enough time left in the season for Famin to test his options and know which driver is better for the team next year.

Alpines radio silence on the matter is the point to focus on right now I think. If they were not considering benching him surely their PR would be quick to shut down all rumours as soon as possible and yet they have not commented. Either they are trying to tarnish Ocons reputation further along with booting him out of the team at the end of the year, they are borderline negligent or they are genuinely considering benching him for Canada
@AKStovall6 ай бұрын
I think that because the 2 drivers are not getting along, parking Ocon would set a precedent. Parking him would let him know that he needs to be a team player, and protect the team, not just go full send and taking your teammate out every time. Every time Alpine has had a double DNF due to a crash with both cars involved, is because Ocon initiated the contact. They don't have to have a clause in the contract. you're not performing to our standard, and you're costing us a ton of money. Ocon could be in breach because he's not performing to the level of his contract.

I appreciate a guy making it into F1 from humble roots. Its why I relate to and love Lewis. You have to drive over the top and aggressively when you have no choice but to succeed. When your families welfare relies on them taking a gamble on you. I understand that its ingrained in him to drive a certain way. But he's got to be controlled chaos.....not just chaos. I hope he doesn't lose his seat over this.....but it doesn't excuse the fact that he should have learned by now that when you're driving an Alpine scratching the bottom of the barrel for points whenever you can....you don't fight your teammate the way he does. Hes done it with every teammate hes had and its just a habit hes got to break. There are 18 other drivers he can fight aggressively, the fact that its so often his teammate that he pushes to the brink is concerning.

these guys do not come from humble beginnings... they're all middle class... the only driver in modern times that actually came from humble beginnings is Kimi.
@Amm17ar6 ай бұрын
@@RoeShamBoe Bro have you heard Ocons story? What about Lewis? Regardless, coming from a middle class family and achieving an F1 drive is just as impossible as being poor. Its a miracle guys like Lewis and Ocon even got the money to drive F3. You have to be insanely talented to get the sponsorship money to get those drives.

Something needs to be done, completely disregarding the plan is just sad. Like why have team meetings or a plan if one of the drivers can't stick to it? Regardless ocon needs to get on board or just go away

Being a little harsh to Jack Doohan he never drove in a real top team in f2 and outscored everyone last year when they got his car up to pace around Spa. They might want to see how he goes and he may well end up in the car next year

Initially Ocon shook his head when told about the Famin quote, later Ocon apologized on social media and says it's my fault! So there you go "consequences" Done! Move on ! 😅
@peterbanierink3436 ай бұрын
To be fair, if Jack Doohan does finish 18th he'd equal Ocon's performance in not scoring points but beats him in not damaging the car for a few thousands of dollars. Some more data to be looking at instead of 1 lap. In Alpine's season so far, i'd take that win
@bkelton06 ай бұрын
Yes Alpine needs points but they are so far down that one race might be good to test Jack out since they will be losing at least one driver next year

I mean at best the could possibly move to 8 but odds are they would stay in 9th regardless

As a team manager, my opinion is that I would rather have a neewb on the team that’s willing to learn, contribute, & follow orders, than a talented person that is insubordinate. Matty said it himself, “its not like they’re fighting for the championship” a team in that position needs to work together, follow the team plan. They have to overcome literally everyone else on the grid. Sacrificing points because you want to be ahead of your teammate is immature, short sided, and inconsiderate to the team.
@Rin-vj4wg6 ай бұрын
In my mind I think the “consequences” was just Bruno locking Ocon ,gasly and their race engineers in the drivers room and letting all hell break loose. 😂

The question isn't whether it's stated in the contract that Alpine can bench him but whether it's stated they can not.

I feel like Gasly has been more of a good team mate. Even when they shouldn't haven't asked him to switch, he did. And Gasly has gotten along with previous team mates. Can't say the same for Ocon.
@kamukameh6 ай бұрын
If Alpine was my team, I would show Ocon the door. He destroys more than he gains for the team so there's no benefit in keeping him overall. I would take Schumacher, even if he is not better in the results he couldn't be worse than Ocon at the moment.

This isn't the first time Ocon has done stuff like this tho. He's got a long history of being a shit teammate, which I think is what's fueling this. There could also be stuff behind the scenes in the garage that we aren't privy to that's causing this reaction as well.

With Ocon's history with how he's raced his teammates, "heat of the moment" comment or not, he does need to learn that his actions have consequences. No other team he's been at has sat him out for a race, and he needs to have that happen for Canada. He nearly cost the entire team the point that Gasly got, and potential points he could've gotten. He needs to sit out for one race.
@justinharrison95216 ай бұрын
The bad pr is done. There’s no point in not following through. At least putting a junior driver in the race puts a positive spin on a negative situation. Look at Bearman and Lawson’s experiences. Alpine can’t have any expectations for points.

I wonder if Alpine might do it just purely to send Ocon a message... I mean, nice as the guy is, he does have a history of putting his teammates in the wall and generally not playing well with his teammates... not to mention the tenuous relationship with Gasley. Generally, I can't see it happening, but Ocon does need an attitude adjustment.

Wouldnt we all be happy to see at the least what Mick or Jack can do if there were a swap? Benching without any effect on his contracted salary, IMO, does not constitute a breach. I think it will simply send a message to adapt his behavior "definitively". However, it is a serious strike against any chances of a resigning for '25. Call this, in labour terms, as a serious warning, registered, reprimanded and remedied.

40 seconds in and I just have to say: He did not say there would be consequences for Ocon. He said you hate to see it and we'll have to deal with the consequences. AKA we might run out of parts allocations or budget before the end of the season. French is very specific about wording and syntax and I'm tired of everyone quoting and further twisting a bad translation. Especially since when asked what will happen from a team management standpoint, he said "C'est pour ça qu'on vas trancher dans le vif." which means taking away something loved or vital, or even cutting out a relationship. That's what you should actually be quoting.
