Not to sound like a hipster, but I loved Sun Eater way earlier than everyone else, and it is so cool to see so many people love it as much as I did. It’s truly my favorite series of all time. I am one of the ones who says Demon in white is the best book in the series though. But DG is still one of the best books I’ve ever read too.

I never thought I'd find a battle sequence that would come close to the Siege of Capustan in Memories of Ice. The Battle of Sabratha came close. So close I don't know if I'll ever find a battle that will unseat it as my second favorite battle sequence. It's the highlight of a truly perfect book.

I'm pleasantly surprised you loved this book as much as you did, I didn't know how the very obvious religious themes would hit you. I'm a huge fan of the series and I've loved all the books (besides the 1st one) so much. Glad you enjoyed it so much!
@callum7081Ай бұрын
It’s refreshing for me to hear religious themes in fantasy so much modern sci-fi and fantasy is just a generic agnostic worldview which gets old. Also lord of the rings is nostalgic for a lot of readers so a hopeful worldview is always welcome.

Thanks for a good video. I have been reading the series on a tour bus in Finland, and just started Disquiet Gods, which seems promising enough. I have loved the universe and the characters. Only thing a bit bugging through all the series has been the endless, propaply inevitable loan of Dune and Book of the new sun. I know Ruocchio has been using them to raise a new glory in a form of a palimpsest of history's greatest space operas, but at times the Wolfe thing, the recreation of very passages and sections of his books is a bit jarring nod of a fan fiction stuff. Like the palatine elders in the prison of Vorgossos (aka the Antechamber from Wolfe) and the caves and corridors of Perfugium (aka the caves and corridors of the Long Sun).

It's gonna take me a while to catch up to this book. I'm reading this series in order, including the short stories and novellas. I just finished Queen Amid Ashes, which happens between books 2 and 3. I'm loving the series, though. It's amazing so far.

For me, the first was 3.5 stars, the second 4.5 stars, ever since book 3, they are all 5 star for me, and it has become a top 5 series of all time for me. Depending how good the last book is, it can challenge the 1 spot for sure. Amazing story, larger than life is the best possible way. I went from disliking the main character in the first book to becoming my favorite character ever... despite the fact that I still not like him completely at a personal level, but I love him as a main character, as weird as that sounds.
@YouWinILoseАй бұрын
Your excitement will definitely get me back to Suneater! Im certainly willing to give book 3 a shot.
@abdullahisayuti6698Ай бұрын
Yeah the Chapter you're talking about is chapter 40: The Judicator. Christopher said it took him more than 2 months to write that chapter alone and was the most difficult task in writing he's undertaken so far. Like it took him longer than it took for him to write Dregs of the empire which is the longest novella yet and you can definitely see why that was the case. That chapter was profoundly written regardless of how some would take the direction it steers the series in.

I've caught up with this series and my enjoyment of the series has increased over time. I think this might be my favorite of the books. However, I'd be lying if I said that Ruocchio's love of the Book of the New Sun didn't hamper my enjoyment of the series; most of the weirdest plot points aren't exactly lifted direct from it, but he certainly stretches the definition of strongly inspired by. THAT chapter was just a less weird version of the weirdest part of Urth of the New Sun. I much prefer when I don't notice all the overt influences from other books. Which, fortunately for this volume - and volumes 4 and 5 - I mostly didn't have to contend with. But yeah, the Wolfe Influence is overpowering here, as often to the series detriment as its benefit. Especially since Wolfe tends to be the opposite of Ruocchio on the "explain things to the audience" scale. I highly recommend you revisit Book of the New Sun - perhaps with a reading guide - so that you can open up the treasures within and appreciate Ruocchio's inspiration, and find one of the greatest works of Sci-Fantasy ever written on your own terms.

My bug with Sun Eater and probably why I prefer the slower books, despite these being tomes, are the abundance of fight scenes. My gosh it was nearly formulaic of course Hadrian and co are gonna be sent in fugue to investigate, it will go wrong, there will be a fight, Hadrian survives. His decisions change and he has changed, but my goodness the 100s of pages of fight scenes jsut isn't my style especially when they don't matter. It's only after the ashes have settled when the book becomes interesting again for me. Perhaps other s feel the same? Edit: To explain the ambiguity, fight scenes and the consequences do matter. It's when there has been a fight sequence i.e. hadrian in KoD I think lands on planet to discover the virus. Did we need the virus and all that to be discovered that way? no other possible way other than yet another failed investigation? Ashes of man is another one where before Hardian meets up with Alex to head to perfugium there is a fight scene that I don't think added anything to the story. HD, the painted man thing to open it up. DiW I don't care if there was some useless in there that was such an amazing book. DG gosh it's hard to find examples, but I guess the opening one after Jadd, but that opener resonated through to the end of DG.

Battle/fight scenes in fantasy books are my least favorite thing in that type of books! It's just boring to me!
@DasCrackerАй бұрын
@@sasapejcin3568 yeah ain’t it? in Sun Eater it has a great benefit of giving the size of the things that are involved and really cool to see that form a world building stand point. it’s just so often that every planet is an investigation gone wrong leading to an escape. for me and you as well it just gets out of hand sometimes. ha! nothing about the author doing it wrong just sooooo much and i didn’t notice many differences in the escapes either form a character development stand point. as in Hadrian kinda takes command or is brutish when not.

I didn’t like Disquiet Gods as much but I didn’t read Dreggs of the Empire so maybe that will help. I think my biggest disappointment was the lack of the new character (won’t spoil her name) doing anything meaningful. I was literally tearing up when she was introduced I was so excited for where she was going and nothing really happened with her at all. I do think more will happen in the next book though so I’m still very excited. Book 5 was my favorite also because of all that time we got to heal and recover from the repeated nut sack punch that was book 4
