I feel ya about trails being discovered. Riff Raff used to keep one of the best local trails accessible to only something locked, armored and on 35s until SxS tourism people came in with a backhoe and literally ruined the entry obstacle so that even stock rigs can get into trouble up above Lake Shasta... The trails have become torn up, covered in trash and now we deal with yearly washouts on once passable trails, fighting to keep people from further damaging or removing obstacles... It's horrible. Love that you made them take the original route on the way back lol

Not sure the deal on that "rubicon" as it's got the XR flares but looks like it's on the 32's. The stock skids from Jeep absolutely suck. They protect the transfer case a little bit. First thing to do is get real skids on it. My jeep and sxs would do that trail no problem, and both are "stockish".

Literally the first modification I did to my stock Jeep JK Wrangler (after fitting rated recovery points front & rear) was to install an aftermarket skid plate over the oil pan. Could never work out why they leave the factory with skid plates over the gas tank and transmission/transfer case but not the oil pan.

I think the lift and wheel/tire combo are much more important. The skid plates are nice for peace of mind, especially for newbies, but having good clearance is a necessity.

I knew what I'd be using it for and didn't need a life & 40" tyres for the trails I'd be running on right then, but have seen enough holes punched in oil pans by errant rocks to know that skids are cheap insurance (and a lot cheaper than the many thousands I'd spend on wheels, tyres and suspension parts I didn't really need at the time).

Hello from Oklahoma! Interesting video. The old river rat here. Every jeep I've owned, 10 so far, have a winch, a recovery kit, and are ridin' on 35's minimum. I'm driving a 2014 Rubicon Unlimited 4 door right now. Its pretty capable, but I know my limitations. Thanks for all y'all do! God Bless!

@@xaeaxaea6280 Yes. There's a bunch of old logging roads in S. E. Oklahoma. Kiamichi mountain area. Some aren't bad others get kinda technical. Take a bow saw and an axe. Clayton, Honobia are good starting points. Or Poteau. There is a land access fee of $40. Or Northeast you can go to Disney, which is Part of Grand Lake area. And if you want to you can go out kinda mid state/west, to The Little Sahara. That ought to get ya started. When I started wheelin' I joined a club and found a bunch of places and learned alot. JB WELD!!! And put oil back in it!!!! and drive it out. Trail Mater did this on a jeep. Drain oil or whats left, clean outside area with break cleaner. Mix some JB metal weld epoxy, and put on the pan oil leak. wait 10 min, put oil back in motor, and drive it out!

JB weld Steelstik is the product I would recommend. Take a Dremel with an acorn shaped burr. Grind back the crack to clean up up. Scuff the area with 80 grit paper then push the putty in there hard.

I keep a roll of aluminium tape on hand, 1 minute resin for concrete bolts and some wipes. Between the resin and the aluminium tape (the good stuff) you can fix just about everything that can be fixed on a trail. You mix the resin in your hands, poke it through the cracks, put the tape on top after you clean up the adjacent area of dirt or oil or whatever and in a few minutes you can pour new oil in. This also works for exhaust leaks, fuel and other things where JB would have to be specialized. Resin don't care, it hardens into a concrete like plug. Just... uh don't drop it into your eyes. It ain't pretty.

I used to have a ton of fun taking my Avalanche on the ton of local trails we used to have, people being insanely disrespectful got them all closed down by the park service and she became a pavement princess, so I ended up having to suck it up and sell it years ago. People doing stuff like taking trucks down the ATV/bike only trails instead of the very clearly marked truck trails, leaving huge messes, just all the general "people are the worst" type stuff. Ruined it for all of us!

Here in Kansas we have what is called low maintenance roads with signs stating travel at your own risk ! I have taken a few of them but I also had experience of driving on oil field roads and farm equipment most of my 69 years ! I also know what my limitations and vehicle limitations are before trying stuff !

So you ask the park ranger, "How are the road conditions? What kind of road is it, really?" but he answers, "What kind of car are you driving? We just had a pickup flip over, because people go speeding..." Hey mister "ranger," don't go judging my driving, my experience, and my sensibility, by what I'm driving. Or by what foolish things other drivers do. I asked you about the ROAD. It was mentioned that it was a County road, so one might assume it was maintained. But we were looking to take it as the way home, rather than backtracking on the asphalt road that ended at the visitor center. The dirt road is too long of a road to take part way down, only to discover there's been a washout or something, and have to backtrack even further. I want to go sightseeing, not have a misadventure. It's true car companies are just trying to sell product, and will tell you anything, with a footnote in the fine print at the bottom. But rangers and local officials should be helping people make smart decisions. Even paved roads become undriveable sometimes. We have a Subaru Forester now, and it's laughable how they tout its rugged capabilities, especially the pricey "Wilderness" edition. I know to laugh, after watching Matt's videos. It ain't no rock crawler or river swimmer. No, it isn't the same as 4WD. I have yet to take a Forester anywhere I wouldn't take my old sedan.

I've watched this channel for a long time now and it's always entertaining. I live in rural NV and completely share the dislike of side by sides and generally the SXS crowd because of exactly what Matt talks about in this channel. Can't take the normal route? The idiots make a new trail. Most also have zero trail etiquette (litter, don't slow when passing, go off track whenever they please).

This is no more principled than any other hipster. Don't get me wrong: I don't have skin in this game. But not taking a busted vehicle back onto the road for no other reason than so no one is traveling onto the road for precisely one trip with three vehicles -- and thereby breakup a customer's truck worse -- isn't principled. What they did is harder on the environment, harder on the obstacles, a waste of time, and cost the customer money.

OH MY GOD this is so relatable. I'm a mountain biker and I've been riding the same trails for 30 plus years. I make posts on the internet about how we should all close the bypasses aka cheat lines around obstacles and half the internet freaks out that I should "mind my business" and people should "ride wherever they want". They haven't been at this for decades, they don't see what way the trails have gotten blown out over time. They need to be educated but they'd rather just tear things up making singletrack into fireroad. It is so frustrating.

Totally agree on the side by side issue, and another thing..... Why is it that most newby wheelers jump straight in with buying 37-40" tires, and all the other stuff that "serious" trails "Require", and they never really learn how to drive. I consider this trail to be intermediate, I drove it on 7.50-16 bias plys, not taking bypasses. I had a ton of fun on Papa Smurf this year in the same rig, and everyone other than our little group was on 37-40" tires, looking at our little rigs like we shouldn't be there. HaHa, we had less trouble than most of them getting up the obstacles. People are sooo into over building / over speccing their rigs these days, and not learning how to drive..... Over built rigs with under skilled drivers are a real issue these days.

Honest question: I get that off-road recovery isn't anywhere near straight-forward but I assume that you have clients sign a contract that says "In the process of recovering your vehicle we are going to bang up your vehicle even more than it already is. Its the nature of the beast with the difficult terrain of these trails." or something along those lines. I get that these vehicles are expected to take cosmetic damage going off-roading but every additional bang and scratch had me wincing especially considering that Jeep was clearly not a purpose built off-road vehicle despite what Jeep advertises. At the end of the day, if you don't want to accept that its going to get banged up during the recovery you're free to wait around for a recovery vehicle that can get it out of there without further damage. You'll either be waiting for a hell of a long time or paying a arm and a leg for the luxury though.

Love your channel family and how you all work together. What I don’t get is Jeep owners. I think they watch to many Jeep commercials on TV and get lied to at the dealership. They have to be modified bar none. They go on their dream trip then get stuck or destroy their new Jeep. I from Michigan and pulled out several Jeeps. I just didn’t have any T-Shirts to give them.
