Been a mechanic for 30 yrs, specializing in electrical troubleshooting. When I have an issue like that, I have a box that I completely eliminate the vehicle out of the equation. It''ll have its on tps for throttle and all that. Esp if it was a vehicle I owned, I would make a box that had its own ecm and power supply. You only need like 4 sensors to run most engines(cam and crank sensor, distributor connector, fuel pump connector, etc). Put a started button on the starter and see if it'll start. If it doesn't than you know it's fuel or spark, but those direct components and nothing electrical. It eliminates all the harnesses and basically every on the vehicle but the engine or the actual fuel pump. You have so many of those Jeeps it just makes sense to make one. Probably take a couple of hours or less to wire it up, and less to hook it to any one vehicle. Also idk if those older cars have the chips in the keys, if they do then you just need an ecm that has been unlocked. You could use it on pretty much any Jeep that has that same engine, the vin wouldn't matter. You're not worried about if timing or anything is perfect, only if it starts. Where I worked for 25 yrs, the factory sent them to us as a required tool. We had like 5 diff kinds for like 30 yrs of diff types of engines.

@@InocenteSandoval I just redid my 84 vette, had to cut out all the OEM engine wiring and redo all of it for a new engine management system, which meant figuring out how to control all the 40 yr old crap that is still in the car. They don't make kits for this. Had to design relays and harnesses to control the transmission and other things. They make them if you want to put modern 4le60 transmissions in them, but not keeping everything all original but the engine fuel system. Anyways things like that are just like putting in a new doorknob on a door for me I guess for most people. I work on hybrid buses and stuff at work, so regular things are just easier.

Hey Matt, i had a similar "no start" issue with my son's 2000 XJ. Everything pointed to the camshaft sensor, so i replaced it... and it didn't fix it. I ended up finding the wires leading to the sensor had the coating falling off, so the copper was exposed and the 3 wires were touching each other. I repaired the wires and it solved the problem. Yep. I have had a 2001 xj and a mj with a 1999 xj drivetrain swap. The engine puts off a ton of radiant heat and destroys the insulation on the wires over time. I have fixed multiple problems by pulling the tape off the harness and inspecting it. Usually the wires are melted together. When you pull them apart you will find exposed copper. Cut the bad out and solder in new ones.

Hi Matt, I had a 2000 xj that I couldn't get to stay running one time. it turned out to be a problem with the computer imobilizer recognizing the skim key and module. Long story short, I ended up buying a wrecked 98 xj that didn't have that crap on it and swapped the entire dash, all wiring harnesses in the engine compartment, changed over to distributor, and all electrical accessories to the 98 model. The jeep is still running great to this day. I know that sounds extreme, but it's a worse case scenario. I would put your jeep back together with the parts it rolled in there with and see if it ran. Then go from there before anything extreme. Thanks so much for mentioning the catastrophic damage that helene did to the mountains of nc. It will be years before the mountains get back to normal and probably months before they release a real death toll. I never miss an episode and love all you guys. Keep up the good work. Oh, and if you scrap the banana, I want it. Lol😂

Besides from obvious sensor failure, when this happens to me it is usually the loss of ground to one or another main component... If a component uses a bolt hole with ground tab , inspect it for electrolysis build up/corrosion. This is a real problem for some vehicles. FYI I sometime have had to add / splice a ground connection to a ground wire in the wire harness because nothing else worked, Also some wires work with a low voltage Paulse rather than constant power, these wires are delicate and should not be ignored during inspection, any little damage is huge to these wires, any small imperfection should be closely examined and tested/ replaced. For some people these problems are easy to diagnose because they will test things in a specific pattern, List's are available from ASE training manual's and probably available on the web? .. LOVE THE SHOW !!!

For the Banana, from a long time viewer and certified mechanic: get a complete wiring diagram (from AllData or Shopkey would be best), and start checking all of the grounds. Normally, grounds break near where they bolt to, ex: to the frame, to the block, to the heads, to the chassis, and not in some obscure place inside the loom. My educated guess, based on learning from previous failures and limited information provided, is that the PCM ground has died of death. ALSO try different brands of sensors if it still throwing the same code. Ex: my 2018 Silverado (yes it has IFS, yes I stay on the pavement, Matt) will not accept certain O'Reilly's (brand name of Standard) sensors, it just throws codes and will not work. Good luck

You want a Mopar CPS. I tried multiple aftermarket and I like cheap parts, but it’s one of those parts. Also, it takes 10 mins to pull the entire engine wiring harness, unsheath it and go through the entire thing. I found numerous frayed wires on multiple XJ’s. It’s good piece of mind. I've owned my 1995 Jeep Xj "Charlene" for 11 yrs now. I work on her myself, I don't take her to a mechanic unless necessary. I've done everything from a tire change to half an engine rebuild. So, I thought I'd give my input on the Banana's starting problems: have you checked the neutral safety switch? When they start to go out, the vehicle doesn't know if it's in neutral or gear, and refuses to start. Sometimes they can be cleaned, sometimes they need replacement. I went through the whole process of wire diagnostics, changing the battery, starter solenoid, ignition switch, etc, before finding out about the Neutral Safety Switch. One thing that can help diagnosis this, is wiggling the shifter when trying to start the vehicle, pushing it towards park or neutral can help assist the start. If it does, then this is the issue. Hope this helps!!

About the banana, while removing the cam sensor , ya gotta be careful how you remove and install the cam sensor, I wonder if he knocked the timing off while removing it or trying to wiggle it back in there ..., on the top of the sensor itself if you remove the body/plastic peice on top double check to make sure it's aligned there is a hole in the side of it and inside on the thing that spins, they must aligned, stick somthing in there to align the holes together, its like a tooth pick size hole basically, with the plastic body piece off, while standing on the passenger side directly facing the engine, look down in the hole of the block and make sure the oil pump Grove is basically perpendicular with the block slightly turned to the rear of the jeep just a hair, while putting the shaft of the sensor in there the helical gear will want to naturally turn that slot in the oil pump straight perpendicular with the block aligning the shaft of the cam sensor and slot of the oil pump together and the holes you aligned inside the sensor should be basically facing you directly, once aligned and put inside then put the plastic body piece back on,theres a few you tube videos of how to do this that are right on the money, its definitely critical to the engine firing, id also to make sure to buy mopar grade parts also.

@marinoechavarria35092 ай бұрын
Hello Matt. The problem with the Banana is the following. Your flywheel has a crack that has shifted it slightly clockwise. This failure happened during the last restart, which is why it ran perfectly before shutting off and then did not run at all during restart. The flywheel is what the crankshaft position sensor uses as a reference. The shift in the flywheel results in the computer reading top dead center incorrectly. Since the computer is still getting a signal from the crankshaft position sensor, it assumes that it is the cam sensor that is not sending the correct position. You will need to remove the transmission to see the damage to the flywheel. Once the transmission is off the problem will be obvious. I know it sounds like something that never fails, but trust me, this is the problem. Anyway, love your channel and say "Hey!" to peanut for me. That dog is the best. Best regards Marino Echavarria.

@@johnchedsey1306 we have a Boxster (986) and a Macan S. As far as sports cars go, my Boxster checks all my (pun incoming) boxes. We’ve taken it on road trips, daily drive it. It’s exciting enough for the relatives to ask for a ride when they come into town. I get to extract joy on my normal drives as long as there’s a corner or two I can try to maximize, including into the driveway. I picked it up cheap, and apart from the mechanical work I’ve put into it, it’s rock solid. Want a new suspension at some point, but that’s a want, not a need. Will stay OEM.

Good video Matt. I would check the wiring harness of all off-roading that that thing does. You probably got a broken wire somewhere either. Going to the main fuse box underneath the The hood take the fuse box so I'll see if it's not corroded underneath where the wires come in. Also check the wiring harness going down the frame rail cuz if it's not communicating it's usually a broken wire or a bad module. Since you changed the crank sensor and the cam sensor I would say it's in the wiring

What always goes bad on those 4.0 Jeeps is the cam sensor cap. It has a little square magnet inside.. If you just pull the plastic cap and look under it, that magnet should be glued to the plastic cap... When it falls off, it will stick down inside the metal parts and cause your "new cam sensor" cap not to read correctly. So look for that. Another thing is the Crank sensor is very sensitive to the depth that it's mounted.. So pull the crank sensor and make sure the mounting surface is clean and flat and not rusty. between these two things, it should have no issues otherwise and is very reliable.
@paulrobicheau95392 ай бұрын
I have had 2 things really stump me on the jeep.. you probably checked... crank sensor, had part of the magnet stuck inside on the fly wheel, between the tooth. Would not let it start. Also not sure if yours has the ASD system, auto shut Down. Drivers wheel well, relay box, top right rely goona green and break off, can't see it but pull the relay and you will. If you are equipped. Thanks matt live your stuff, wish I could afford your full subscription... hope you find the problum with the banana

About the Banana...Unplug it and plug it back in. That always works for my computers lol. seriously though, I know this is probably a stupid question, but have you checked the ground wire? We had a Taurus that suddenly died on us and we replaced a lot of things including the ECU and still wouldn't start. When we started chasing wires and connections, we found a broken ground wire. Once we fixed the ground wire the car fired right up. Or the starter could have been damaged during the recovery. "It's always the simple things that stump us the most". My Dads favorite saying.

Seriously Matt ... you need to try Snowrunner ... the desert edition, with the heavy wrecker and morrvair!! Even better would be if you could work with them to design a map which has some of the challenges from around the hurricane area built in, along with the MORR fleet. It would sell well - the main reason I started playing the game was because it was a bit like your videos!

@oomwat61012 ай бұрын
@@jhhuntster What I'd like to see is for them to work with Matt on creating missions that are reflective of actual off road recovery. Also I'd love to see them using real life Digital Elevation Model data from Utah/Arizona, likely stitched together so that things are closer together than in real life. The models for most of the vehicles are already there, albeit without the correct livery, and building the rest would be fairly straightforward. Maybe they could make it multiplayer so that you would have to take out several vehicles to get them out. Of course the fuel gauges would have to be iffy so that you often run out of fuel, and there needs to be a Mavericks in there too where you can pickup a victory pie!

Even with good crank and cam sensors. You will need a magnetic (reed) pulse to trigger the sensor. Check for damaged or missing magnets. I had this issue in the past on a jeep Cherokee flywheel. I've personally repaired a Jeep YJ with a crank but no start problem that turned out to be a ECU failure. When the ignition was in the "on" position the check engine light wasn't illuminated. I checked for power on the appropriate pin on the ECU connector and found power. It turned out to be failed capacitors on the ECU. It was an easy and cheap fix, I just ordered some replacement capacitors off Digikey and soldered them onto the ECU. You may have a similar issue. The Jeep I fixed rolled into the shop in the fall for frame repairs and when it was reassembled in the spring it would no longer start. I know you said you swapped a "known good ECU" but it's entirely possible that sitting on the shelf the capacitors have failed due to them being discharged for so long (the newest XJ ECU has to be 20 years old at this point). At least that's what I assumed happened to the YJ I repaired after sitting for several months with the battery disconnected. Many similar vintage electronics have suffered capacitor failure. It really sets off a red flag when you said "We couldn't communicate with the ECU".

Hello Matt I have never commented on a video before but I have a 1989 Jeep XJ with a 1990 engine swapped into it. 2 years ago i was driving on the high way it shut off after hitting a small bump and would not start back up I replaced the Distributor, Cam Sensor, Crank Sensor, Ignition Coil, Wires, Plugs. Jeep had all brand new Ground cable, Positive cables. Went through the whole troubleshooting book and forums nothing helped turned I had a bad (Brand New) Crank Sensor they have to get a certain amount of Ohms or Voltage Reading I believe the shop I took it to said old part was reading like .48 and it needed to be .65 it has been a while so don’t quote me but they changed the part and it has ran perfect since so just because of a cheap part or a faulty part from a auto store it wouldn’t start at all just cranked.

Those Jeeps are known for breaking the plug on the long coil pack and causing them to randomly shut down. Since all 6 coils are built on a single assembly it sucks that there is no easy way to make them individual and you just have to replace the whole unit. Be careful with the plug because being too forceful with it will cause the same problem because the plastic is extremely easy to crack. Good luck.
