You got the radiators backwards. Since you are aiming for maximum cooling, it needs to be counter-flow. The air is flowing from front to back, so the coolant needs to flow from the back to the front. Hot water through the back radiator first will be cooled somewhat, then through the front radiator where air is the coolest, to get the coolant to the lowest temperature possible.

Feed the back radiator with hot coolant first, that allows a better temp delta for the airflow to coolant for both rads.
@pfistor
@pfistor Жыл бұрын
That makes the most sense to me. The 2nd radiator is getting the hotter air but that is still enough to cool the initial hot coolant and then the coldest radiator is the last place it goes before the engine.
@mikeworkman3593
@mikeworkman3593 Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is the laws of thermodynamics. the delta T, keep the hot with the hot, the rear radiator will have the hotter air. Actually the front radiators exit air should NOT be able to go into the rear radiators air. It looks like they have a deflector on the rear but it only goes halfway up, they should make it go all the way to the top of the rear so it gets fresh outside unheated ambient air flow.

As one of the 7 engineers, I’d like to say: by creating a longer more complicated path for the water you will create resistance to flow. That means that you will have a lower water flow rate with the stock pump. Most likely this will not cause any issues, if however there is an issue when you drive this thing on hot days you may consider changing the impeller on the pump or getting a pump with a higher flow rate.
@Dozav7
@Dozav7 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking an additional external pump would help with pressure, but not sure about reliability. If they had the radiators in parallel, it’d actually be less back pressure. Really I wouldn’t worry about it unless problems crop up.

Concept of the Day: "Contraflow" When doing heat exchange, the two media should be flowing in opposite directions. So if the air is flowing front to back, then the coolant should be generally progressing back to front, i.e. the front-most radiator visited last, just before sending coolant back to the engine. For clarity, if both circuits of a heat exchanger are plumbed with the same flow direction, then it's a "temperature averager". That said, everything might work just fine. This is just the basic idea of exchanging heat, applied to this example. Cheers.
@isilder
@isilder Жыл бұрын
Should, if you want the heat exchanger to save you fuel/electricity bills .. in heating some building, for example. When you return the otherwise wasted heat to where you are heating by burning fuel/electricity, you save fuel, input power, money... When the heat lost to the air is just wasted (it being implausible to add a heat exchanger to each cylinder and expect it to achieve anything , in a reliable fashion... ) , its only a question of , is their enough heat exchanger power ? Factor into that the diminishing returns of radiators, as the air will also do cooling on the huge surface area of metal of the engine...
@rezalbb
@rezalbb Жыл бұрын
That's right, the log mean temperature difference (driving force for heat transfer) is greatest in a counter-flow heat exchanger. In a parallel-flow HX, the large initial temperature difference quickly brings the temperatures closer, reducing the average temperature difference.

Counterflow the radiators. I.E. Feed the rear radiator with water first. You want to maximize the temp difference between the air and the water through the whole system. The higher the temp difference, the better the heat transfer. So in the front coil, the air is the coolest, so it can continue to cool water that is cooler than in the rear radiator. When the air hits the rear radiator, it's hotter, so you want hotter water in the rear radiator to continue transfering heat into the air. Hope this helps! This build is awesome!
@spambeanie2
@spambeanie2 Жыл бұрын
Also, the straight through shot through the radiator is not what you do. You should series wire them. If you're going to have a bypass from one to the other you put a thermostat in between like you would on a piece of equipment. I would run a dual thermostat off like a caterpillar system basically a road grader tractor piece of equipment system
@spambeanie2
@spambeanie2 Жыл бұрын
If you want to bypass circulate also run your heater core from your motor to your heater core and your heater core to the front radiator. Then run an expansion tank with a small line to it and to the heater core. The air bubbles will go through the expansion tank back to the heater core but you won't have a noticeable amount of float through them

I had a buddy of mine who use to help me work on my Jeep, like most backyard mechanics he knew wrench sizes and their order. Well he also would come work for me building houses and struggled with reading a tape measure until finally one day it dawned on me to hand him a tape measure and asked him that if I had a 1/2" wrench but it was too small what size wrench you hand me next, he 9/16", yes, but it's still a little small, what size are you handing me now, he said 5/8". I smiled , had him look at the tape and told him, you just learned how to read a tape measure. Never had a problem ever again with reading measurements. Just a little life lesson I had and figured maybe it could help others to grasp reading a tape measure.

It makes sense from the science of it too... the flow of heat is proportional to the diference in temperature (between coolant and the air flowing past it.. ) but that cooling power that might not be needed . If the separate cooling power of two radiators is well above requirements, then the second radiator can run at less cooling power than its design would allow. All these radiators cooling the coolant are raising the temperature of the air flowing past the engine and exhaust, and thats a lot of surface area that gets air cooled.. so there's a diminishing return on improving radiator performance...

Radiator tech here. You actually want to leave the cardboard on the radiator. It’s supposed to be there to deflect hot air from the environment from entering into your coolant system. You only remove the cardboard if you’re operating your vehicle in cooler climates like Canada or Alaska. I’m surprised you didn’t just install vent covers, that would be much more effective.

Matt, your coolant path is backwards in terms of cooling efficiency. You want the hottest coolant on the engine side, with the coldest coolant at the front of the truck. That 195° from front is going to saturate rear radiator. And just leave by-pass heater core circuit the same so you get good heat. Or you can put card board back in lol! I won't bore you with the math I did between oil cooler, condesor, radiator temps. But you should be able to drop 15°-30° per radiator. 11:50 why not add just hot water mixing valve? Once the small loop opens, you split the flow with a Y pipe: One goes to the hot side of the mixing valve and one side goes into the 2 radiators and then back to the mixing valve on the cool side. The output of the mixing valve goes into the pump and the heater box. So you first heat up your engine and as soon as the large loop slowly opens it will feed-in hot water to the heater box. As set temperature is met, the mixing valve starts mixing it cool water thought the radiator in, as necessary. You could then add a secondary temperature gauge which looks at the temperature in front of the mixing valve, on the cold side. This way, you know how much cooling capacity you have left. As long as the second temperature is lower as the set temperature, you're in the green. :)

Assuming you have the room under the bonnet, consider finding a way to raise the fill port a few inches so it is above both radiators to aid in filling. You need to have a common high point to properly purge the air.

I was going to say something similar. From my experience in building water cooled computers's back in the day before they made main stream blocks and RadFanCoolerReservoirs for them like they do now-- I toyed around with extra large reservoirs where the pump drew from the cooled water in the res than from the cooled water from the Rad. Although this created a condensation effect on hot days from the Res...the system ran cooler with Res to pump to block to rad than drawing directly from the Rad to Pump to block to Res.

Its a common knowledge that the filler or the reservoir has to be higher than the rest of the system since the air gets trapped in the highest point. To me it seemed that the filler was the highest point so it should work just fine. If its not possible to achieve, there is a bleed valve added to the highest point.

Have to tell you this story and I hope you read it. Very funny. My dad worked for GM and was a machine repairman by trade. He was working with a "new" guy and my dad told him to go measure something so they could cut it to length. The guy came back and told my dad it was 33 inches and THREE LITTLE MARKS!!!!!! My dad was stunned and confused. To the point where my dad had to see this. So the guy showed my dad the "three little marks." The guy in question stated he never had to learn to read a tape measure because all the little marks are the same. In which my dad pulls out his machinist scale from his pocket and shows this guy. quote..."Holy crap!!!! that's a lot of little marks!" Sorry for the long comment. Keep up the great videos.

It's a great project, a great team. Being able to balance the balance between vehicle weight and workforce is a huge goal. A resistant structure is needed for the great work that will be carried out every day, a large structure can be equal to a lot of weight and this greatly favors the sinking of wheels on soft floors in the work area, although how much traction force will be needed? . Besides, I consider that the management of the volume flow of air in the area is very important (how it enters, who displaces it, how it goes outside) (the idea is to steal heat quickly) and also the volume flow of water in the system of refrigeration, you will possibly need an auxiliary electric pump to be able to run the distance quickly in the shortest time. An oil tank greater than the standard, in the engine, in the transmission, in the direction, will allow its radiators to help cool the system and with electrical assistance included, we must remember that oils, apart from lubricating, are also great heat sinks and if they are Coolers give more life to the engine and transmission, minimizing failures and giving more useful life.

After the explanation on the split radiators at 9:30 they make more sense. Pulling in fresh air for at least the lower half of the second radiator will surely put it to some benefit, even if the top half doesn't end up doing much. Fun fact - Corvettes use a similar radiator setup to your second one that draws air in from the bottom. Very nice 😎

Wow, that's pretty cool. I think the air should flow through the secondary radiator first, and then through the primary. Temperature difference is important to heat transfer and if the air flows through the primary first the temperature difference may be higher across that radiator, but it would be reduced across the secondary radiator. If the air goes through the secondary first, it will maximize the temperature difference across that radiator, and there should still be a significant difference across the primary because it will always be warmer than the secondary. What are your thoughts?

@@MattsOffRoadRecovery Yeah, I agree. You should see how it works the way you have it first. There may be an efficiency advantage to the air flowing through the secondary radiator first, but it just might not end up making a practical difference here. Brother matt. You know that I live in the hottest region in the world. The temperature in the summer reaches 54 degrees Celsius 130f and the temperature of car machines rises. The solution is not to expand the radiator slots only. The only solution is to add small fans to the radiator from the outside, To compensate for the lost air in the direction of the truck's movement because relying on the zinger fan is not enough.. Try placing two small fans, two will suffice. Then you will feel that the machine is working comfortably.. Your friend from the Middle East 👋🏻

Or the water will follow the shortest route and make it overheat. You also can't run them without a thermostat. Will also over heat. I guessing you already know that. Can not wait to here it run. The front radiator needs a dip tube to ensure flow goes to the bottom half of the radiator. Also, hot fluid to the inner radiator first to improve cooling as others have commented. It is called counter current cooling if anyone wants look it up.
@scottmcwilliams2204
@scottmcwilliams2204 Жыл бұрын
Matt, Please take note of these two comments. You may actually make your cooling worse if you don't fix the fluid instability issue in the front radiator. The way it is set up now the hot water will enter the front radiator, flow through the top portion and flow out the top. The hot water will never reach the bottom of the radiator especially when you are driving and cooling the fluid that is in the bottom half. The cooler/denser fluid in the bottom won't mix with the hotter/thinner fluid in the top. There is a reason the inlets and outlets on radiators are on opposite corners. Also swap the radiator flow. The radiator with the cooler fluid should have the cooler air. Otherwise you could end up with the second radiator fluid and air temps being very close together which would negate any cooling effect.

The best heat exchange is counterflow. On an tube cooler: when oil flows from right to left the water flows from left to right. The oil comes in hot en drops in temperature. Where it leaves the cooler the cold coolant water gets in. This way you have the most difference in temperature between cooland and the stuff to be cooled. This gives the best heat exchange. Thats why i suggest to connect the outlet of the engine to the rear radiator. Indeed the air is hotter but there will be the most difference in temperature between coolant and air.
