Why would anyone use a 3spd transmission when you could get an allicin and then have an indestructible 6spd put that on a 2 SPD transfer and get 12 speeds

In aircraft construction a rule of thumb is all electrical lines are routed above fluid lines. Also use rubber cushion clams to secure the lines to prevent chafing. Use heat guards around exhaust or hot components. Allow proper slack for flexing and labeling of lines for ease of identification and servicing. The wrecker is definitely ONE OF A KIND. It’s a beast!

At least it does not have potentiometers and is not going into outer space. Then your shafts would need double jam nuts and a drop of thread locker, plus a mark of paint pen signifying it was tightened per procedure.

In the late '60s, I was riding with my dad in his custom built oil field auger rig. Very similar construction with 4 wheel drive and steering. We were returning from a job, rolling off the tehachapi mountains when the transfer case exploded painting the back window with hot oil. I could see chunks of the gear bouncing down the road. We coasted for 3 miles to a farm house and used their phone to call for a tow. Back in the shop there was nothing but the shifting fork left. We spent 2 days installing another gearbox. You're shop videos bring back fond memories of working with my father.

I have an idea to improve your removal and replacement of your cab for your wrecker. Write up a checklist that covers the removal and then make another checklist for the replacement of the cab. Then you guys won't forget anything when you take it off. I know that means Matt would have to get really organized. But it really would help quicken up the process.. And like matt just said... "We've taken the cab on and off a lot But not enough to remember how". Since you are fixing the beast, I have a suggestion on the airlines one the firewall: Use nickel plated brass push-to-connect fittings instead of plastic. Also be sure to use ferrules on the inside of the air lines/tubing to make sure it holds its shape. I use to buy metal fitting from a company called Norgren. I suspect SMC also has these. Great machine!

Pro Tip for poison oak, ivy, mosquito bites, etc. A lot (or all of) the itching sensation comes from a specific subdermal protein buildup that can be denatured with heat. Easiest thing to do is to run hot (but not scalding) water over it for a minute or two which should give 6-8 hours of total relief.

I have been a fan of the TowMORR wrecker since the first frame channels were cut. It is just the right size, and weight, and I always put the biggest tires that will fit on every vehicle I have. Although the boom is still a couple of feet too short. Add 3 feet to the bottom. Einstein, a relatively smart guy said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Anyone that has made their own vehicle from scratch also says, make it easily maintainable. To deal with the continual heat problem, consider some T-bucket headers and side pipes ;) On a serious note, I'd spend some time figuring out why that adaptor broke, besides dismissing it as "just aluminum." Next time it will be the tail of the transmission which is also "just aluminum." Somehow a bending force is being applied. Maybe hits on the belly pan, transmitted up through the mount, or maybe something else. In other vehicles, there would be a transmission mount and a transfer case mount. Be safe, have fun.... repeat

Dear morr if I remember correctly those wheel planetary’s are what’s breaking your transfer cases, they gear you down at the wheels but not on the drive train, you’ll probably have to go military 5 ton transfer, like I said I think I’m right, but can’t fully guarantee my memory, please research this, I’m not a critic, but an old guy trying to help

Gearing down at the wheels is also gearing down the drivetrain. The idea of the planetary hubs is that it takes the load off the drivetrain because it’s geared down at the hubs. That way the drivetrain doesn’t have to put out as much torque. With how that broke it’s likely flexing and stressing the adaptor. The chassis may not be as stiff as it seems so it’s likely they need more flex in the drivetrain mounts.

When you removed the broken piece, in front of the doubler. Your transmission dropped down a fair amount. If possible, I would add some mounts to the rear of the engine. So that there isn't so much unsupported weight between the engine front mounts and the transfer case. I love your wrecker! Maybe that will help it a little. Also there is tubing called fire hose for wiring on crawlers that work on forest fires. Maybe that would help shield your wiring better.

Finally. Not so much like a frustration of waiting, more like relief of you're addressing the issues of putting an unfinished build into service and just band-aiding every issue that's popped up so far. This is going to be awesome because really anything you do is an improvement from tin foil and zip ties and while it gives the Wrecker a unique look, I'd prefer to see a full functioning wrecker with the minor issues that are the "norm" at MORR; like running out of fuel.

Great story - very satisfying to see problems resolved. One bit of frustration: Tom says "Is that a blind hole? How do we get that (bearing) out?" Next shot, Matt is holding and inspecting the bearing. Oh well, every expert needs to have some trade secrets - that is what makes the expertise marketable. No worries about the beefy throne tipping over in the wind. Is Peanut still in it? (Left the yard with Peanut astride the throne, Peanut not seen upon return from Sand Hollow.) And were those MattStraps lifting the doubler and transmission?

As a suggestion, get all your bearings and gears CRYOGENCIALLY SURFACE-HARDENED where they dip the metal parts in liquid nitrogen to ensure ONLY SURFACE-HARDENING which improves wear and tear by 2x to 3x over unhardened metals! Look up up "Cyrogenic Surface Hardening" on Google for machine shops that do this OR you could learn how to do it yourself using internal shop-built liquid nitrogen baths for your own parts that can so surface-hardening only OR do full-cryo-immersion inorder to super-harden/super-strengthen an entire part through-out. Depending on the stainless steel or tool steel alloy blend, you don't always get a more hard but BRITTLE part, you can ensure you get a properly super-strengthened part! PLEASE ALSO use something like X1R oil additives to ensure slipperiness of metal-to-metal contact in your gears and bearings --- You'll save money in the long-run! (Make your oil additive does NOT use Teflon as part of the additive!) Look up X1Rcorp to find out more about their oil and transmission additives! V

The rig that 'Top Gear' drove to the North Pole was actually built in Sth Africa. Anyone who says they have central tyre inflation all figured out does not, it is complex and prone to failure unless built to military specs and even then it is a known failure point.

@@seanworkman431 Nope, Arctic Trucks of Iceland built it. If you’ve ever been to Iceland you’ll see what seems like half the rigs on the road have central tire inflation, including all of the off-highway capable tourist busses. They definitely have it “figured out”. Much better (simpler) system than the Army’s. I have time behind the wheel of an M939 while serving in the Guard, and yes it was iffy. It was at this time he explained to me the origin of those vehicles and vehicle production in Sth Africa, some of the best military vehicles in the world are produced there. I know that I can trust the words from the mouth of someone who is looking me in the eye, more than that of a keyboard warrior like yourself whom I'm guessing cannot even iron a shirt or sharpen a knife let alone build a modified vehicle or a boat as I have.

Im sure you guys know this already but yeah um... dont go solid mount front to back. When you bind under hard load its going to NEED to flex and twist or something is going to break. Regardless how much strength you built into this frame it will still never be absolutely rigid enough. Isolate the drive assembly front to back and anywhere it mounts to the frame you need bushings, rubber or poly dont matter.

I love watching you guys work, but sometimes it hurts :) Never run air in an engine bay unless you can't avoid it, if you're running air in an engine bay, run as little air as possible in there, and ensure that you're using teflon lines for anything in there. Never store air in an engine bay. If you're running air with any part of the system in an area that can heat soak make 100% sure that you've got pressure reliefs everywhere it's possible to build up pressure (especially where you've got flow control, like solenoids or check valves). When you're running air out of a compressor you should ALWAYs provide a high temp heat sink and make sure the lines out of the compressor are either special purpose high temperature flexible lines or, ideally, hard lined. Large diameter hard line is my go to, I usually like to run 1/2" out in copper, hard line to a tank, which provides a heat sink and then distribute from there. Air directly out of a compressore can be as high as 350F or about 180C in ambient conditions, if you don't provide adequate cooling to your compressors, or let it take hot air, then it'll be worse. Normally when you're running in an engine bay you expect an ambient of about 80C (180F) with hot spots around anything like exhausts, turbos, that sort of thing... Given that you're operating stationary or near stationary and having cooling issues, expect worse... The air will heat the lines and tanks ABOVE that temp, so you're always going to fail your flexible lines in your current design. Air compressors and air tanks dump a lot of heat over time, and require drainage as well, even in dry environments, so it might be worth seeing if you can sneak an air tank under the vehicle at the rear, between the chassis rails, to allow cooling. Hydraulics run hot too, so they're a source of heat for stuff like air that's operating nearby. Also, if your transmission adaptor failed it means it's copping a serious beating, so check your driveshafts for witnessing indicating that they're hitting their plunge limits... You might just be changing the failure point by changing adaptors. It's an awesome truck and I love your work :D

Matt what you guys have done as a group on the wrecker project is fantastic. Since you have asked for help I just want to add to the conversation what little experience I've had around the design of heavy equipment. Most forestry loaders and skidders are assembled from sub-components manufactured by a few companies with decades of experience designing drive lines that take the brutal abuse seen in the logging industry. I wonder if you guys have considered tapping that knowledge base to help with calculating stress levels on various components? I'm sure there is a lot of cross pollination between the rock crawler industry and heavy industrial drive line design. Since your wrecker isn't necessarily being designed as a hot rob but rather a heavy utility machine albeit with the cool old IH cab, seeking some serious engineering input might not hurt. Along those lines of thought; I Googled skidders and skidder parts and came up with a bunch of businesses that sell used HD components. Seems you have found one weak spot in your drive line being the connection between your transmission and the transfer case. You obviously have plenty of horse power with that engine but getting it to the tires without destroying what's in between I predict will be a continuing issue unless sturdier components are used. The esprit de corps of your crew is admirable. Obviously you guys have the creativity, talent, sense of humor and tools to accomplish anything you decide to do. I've enjoyed watching the progress of this project and will continue to watch for updates as they occur.
@Screwdriversteve1
@Screwdriversteve1 8 ай бұрын
That adapter plate broke because the Engine is on rubber mounts and the transfer case is mounted solid to the frame. When you are on the trail the torque is loading the housing not the motor mounts like its supposed to. Mount the t-case on rubber mounts so the torque load stays inside the trans and is transmitted to the motor mounts. Its also possible that the engine bouncing on the trail is creating a leverage on that adapter plate. Either way changing to a steel one will only move the load to the next weak spot. Keep up the great work guys!
