If you want pulsating, do a trailer made of feathers for your trailer hook. Just make sure your trailer hook is set on the main hook. Eh, these kids say I'm a rookie.

I like to experiment alot but I probably run a powerbait grub or zoom fat Albert 90% of the time as a trailer on spinnrbaits and on swimjigs too. I like being able to mix and make more complex colors by adding a trailer, I rarely match color of bait and trailer exact. Also scent if I'm running Berkeley grubs which I prefer. Deffinatly going to try what you talked about this spring though too, and it'll be nice to have a use for my trailer even after it gets its tail bit off haha also ive never used one of those actual split tail spinnerbait trailers for the same reasons you mentioned, but I might have to pick up a pack if I see them somewhere now.

Sometimes a boot tail.is a necessity on spinnerbaits. If you look at how they run underwater. A lot yend to run at an angle and not straight on. The boot tail creates drag in turn causing it to run straight. Only on some spinnerbaits. I learned this watchimg underwater video. Some spinnerbaits run pretty straigjt though and iight do like you and just use a chunk of plastic. If you look underwater at a split tail it damces man. I mean more tha youd think. Because of the blades vibration. Check put some footage and think it over but dont over think it. Lol. Great video matt.

Hi Matt I've been using those split tail trailers for years. Used to use the Cabela's brand. Ever since I watched Hank Parker win the classic on his Mann's spinnerbait. Hank used to use a very similar trailer. For a period of time. I did not use those trailers. I do recall maybe I didn't catch as many fish. Although I always ran a cheater hook whenever possible on my spinnerbaits taking that lesson from KVD. I started using those trailers again. I agree about the boottail trailers and such. Up here in New York where I fish most of the reservoirs are crystal clear. You can see easily 20 to 30 ft down. I try and keep my spinnerbaits. Very natural looking and compact because I feel I get more bites.

This is really interesting. You don’t use boot tails and hear I am running spinnerbaits with ONLY a swimbait and no skirt. Or a Shad color curly tail grub with a red fish jig spinner attached, like a scaled up beetle spin. Sounds crazy but I caught so many 4-5s out of our 7 acre pond as a kid on them that I’ve started using it again, and it definitely catches numbers. Awesome video, definitely going to try this on my standard spinnerbaits

The plastic chunk or small stick worm on the spinnerbait allows the bass to inhale the bait with ease versus not allowing the bass to inhale a broken up skirt. Vacuum effort. Try vacuuming a ball full of holes then vacuum up a ball that is solid. The one with holes is harder to pick up with the vacuum. The solid one is picked up with ease. This vacuum effect is what the bass are doing when they hit the spinnerbait or buzzbait!

The split tail trailer is my number one trailer I use on all my spinnerbates, buzz Bates, And vibrating jigs. I never have to use a trailer hook.. I don't like the long strands of skirt on my Baits.. I will also use a color which offsets some of the color in my spinnerbait skirts To give the Bates more attraction. There is a color in between the white and yellow that I use the most. It is lime colored.. If it's not broke don't fix it.

If you would have said anything besides a split-tail eel I would have disagreed. The small eel lets the spinnerbait do what it is supposed to. Erratic action. A large curl or boot tail trailer dulls the action of the spinnerbait and absorbs vibration. I actually prefer to NOT have the skirt cover the legs. Just the 2 appendages provides the right action to attract the fish to the hook. Great topic

Hello this is off topic of this video but I was really interested in if you could make a video of drag settings four different techniques. No one seems to make videos about that the only time you hear about drag is when flipping and pitching everybody seems the lock their drag down other than that you don't hear much about how for what is the proper tension setting on certain types of techniques

haha, i thought it was gonna be trailer hooks, this is much better. I'm with you 100 on this. We all seem to agree that it works, myself included. I still will occasionally throw a power grub on the back, I don't mind the curly tail, but only 3" power grub max. The question is why it works. I like your "suction" angle, but I have heard a couple reputable guys say - and it makes sense to me - that they key in on the hook with more bulk because they "know" that is the "largest" meal in the "group". Sure, we've all seen a couple bass choking on a bluegill, and that's sad when you do see it, but how often do you see that?? I subscribe to the theory that between the eyes, lateral lines, whatever else, a bass just knows the rough mass of its target. Darwin removes any without the ability from the breeding pool. You know how we can throw things without actually thinking about parabolas or the acceleration of gravity?? Most of us can throw a ball much better than explain the physics behind it. Humans have to throw things, or we woulda died a long time ago. Bass gotta eat fish. Wasted energy has an evolutionary cost. They can "feel" the bulk of the trailer and key in on it. I subscribe to that idea, although, the suction theory has legs too. The "suction" would kinda blow right by the skirt alone. The jig head, hook, every other part of a spinnerbait are roundish and probably don't react much to suction. Very interesting thought. I myself, wonder if just a little plastic causes the bait to kinda carry the hook differently, up or down, not sure, and that gets you a better hookup ratio. Maybe we'll never know for sure, or it's a combination of all of the above. Interesting thought.

Thank you for sharing this, I love fishing spinner baits and have not found any trailers that I like, but this makes a ton of sense to me and cannot wait to get out there and try it.

Hey Matt, another great tip, will definitely give it a try! I was wondering what blank you prefer for open water spinnerbaiting? I just finished up building the CB 906. I feel that rod would be to long for close contact spinnerbaiting, around trees, etc, but how would it be for open water spinnerbaiting? Thanks!

i like the CB906 for chatterbaits and swimbaits, but for spinnerbaits i use the NMB-843

Spinnerbaits and Rat-L-Traps were the first 2 lures I went hardcore on as a kid. Bought as many as my paper route funds would allow 😆. Blue Fox willow leaf and Hank Parker Indiana leaf spinerbaits. I loved that double leg trailer that came on the Hank Parker baits.

So Matt, blade colors? Willow leafs, primarily, how often do have the larger blade be a silver blade. For me, I have a hard time using silver on top. Gold just looks the best- to me! I’m not a fish but gold is my go to as the larger blade. Thought? Thanks. Great stuff.

i honestly prefer double silver, but do mix it up. If im in Florida i really prefer double gold.

I’ve used them (zoom trailers) for over 35 years. That’s been my secret for years. Matter of fact I just got through ordering 15-3/8 oz. Hank Parker spinner baits for my backup supply and they come with a harder version of that trailer. Maybe all my fishing buddies won’t see this video with my secret weapon. Lol. He. He. Ha. Thanks man. Great video. Can’t wait to try your secret hair jig presentation. Mike V.

I've used many different trailers, anymore I'll use a translucent zoom trick with white and it's combinations. I trick my skirts like what you displayed.

Wow! Pretty enlightening video. I used to always throw spinnerbaits with trailers and trailer hooks, then over the years noticed that I almost always caught them on the main hook while the trailer hook gaffed the fish on the side. So in the last 3-4 years I've stopped using trailer hooks and actually think I catch more fish now, and they hammer it. I sometimes use an Uncle Rob's trailer, and sometimes nothing. I'm not sure if I catch more or less with or without, but I do like the subtle look of that senko tip. I like the bulk it gives, and might even go a little shorter. Thanks for all the tips you provide us, very intuitive. Hey, you probably should have named your program that.

This video caused me much thought last night on all the things I've tried over the years. Probably the worst is a clear bladed spinner bait that Roland Martin push 50yrs ago. It was short lived without a bite.

Hey Matt, I really like the comment you made towards the end of the video about not using a trailer hook. My dad was making spinnerbaits back in the 60s before I was born, so I literally have been making them my whole life....most kids got toys, I got fishing lures. I have never used or needed to use trailer hooks ever..... common denominator of the need for a trailer hook is point blank, something is wrong with your bait......I have heard so many people have this debate and I laugh every time because usually they tie on some sort of a willow leaf shad pattern bait and never change it trip after trip after trip until it breaks or they lose it.....if it doesn't work today or they miss fish on it they never adjust and just use a different bait.......a closed mind equals a rod that rarely bends. Your work bench looks like mine. I appreciate and can relate to the hours you put in to all the Tweeks on your baits and techniques......keep them coming

thanks for the support! Ive never felt like trailer hooks help. In theory they sound great, on the water I question them all of the time.

Try the original floating worm come up from the tail cut it thread it on it does not drag but it wiggles on the back it does not create no drag like a boot or a big paddle tail worm , it has a baby paddle tail that wiggles so good , it does not flap and it’s skinny , I cut mine about 4 inch long I let mine hang off behind the hook a good bit past where the skirt falls , and you will not feel it on your spinnerbait , it feels like nothing is on it

I started last year putting half a stick bait on my spinnerbait. Someone said use a trailer and all I had was some yum dingers. Never thought about a boot tail or anything. I was actually looking at those zoom baits at Walmart. But never got them.

I feel trailers dampen the pulsating action of the skirt. It's what makes it look real IMO. Although I'm always trying to make sure the fish doesn't get a great look at anything I throw.
@MattStefanFishing

thats why i like just a little chunk of plastic. skirt still flows but it adds just enough bulk.

I’ve used grub and boot tail trailers from time to time but always felt it hurt the bite. I abandoned them and have run bare. I went thru my Senco’s and found some white ones and am going to add them to my white spinner baits and see how it works out with the other tip you had about pumping the rod. Truth be told I have caught way more Pike than Bass on spinnerbaits. Hopefully I can turn this the other way! Thanks for the tip!

I wonder if you could use the back end of a fluke, that way the trailer moves with the skirt when you pulse the rod and it would also add that fish tail profile
