You can keep KZbin playing on Chrome for free, at least in Android. Open KZbin via the Chrome browser, set the page to show the PC version, press play on the video and lock the phone. It might stop initially but just like a music player it will leave a notification bar on your lock screen with buttons, and pressing play there will allow it to keep going even after the phone is locked.

I live in small town in the middle of Russia and back in 2009 when I only started to discover KZbin for myself, there was so little content in Russian so I pretty much had no choice but to try to watch videos in English. The majority of channels I'm subscribed to are in English and even though it's been 10 years I still don't have many recommendations in Russian. Never been abroad (not even to Moscow lmao), never met a native English speaker. But thanks to this happy "accident" now I can enjoy content in English and probably would be able to even hold a conversation if needed (even though I make lots of mistakes and may sound way too off :D)

As someone studying Japanese - I'd like to add a helpful tip. As most of you probably know, KZbin videos usually come with closed captions. More likely than not, the Japanese videos you watch will have closed captioning. However, more likely than not, these captions will be auto-generated. Good news, I've found a few Japanese KZbinrs who have taken the time to add their own subtitles into their KZbin videos and into the closed captioning. Example: Tokyo Veg Life / Miku Real Japanese (some videos) / Sayura Saying Next step I recommend. You can extract the closed captions (google how) and add those closed captions to a reader of your choice - this will help you with your immersion, reading, and allow you to look up words you don't know (if the reader/app you use provides that feature of course).

Omg new Matt video. Yay, I dont have to rewatch the old ones today :) MIA French - I actually do use a second youtube channel for french :D PS: MIA/AF(J)ATT for french is one lf the mlst powerful things that you could imagine, since the French are famous for their chronic incomprehensible slur tornado of words - but thats exactly why MIA works with French so much! Just in 80 days I am starting to differentiate more and more words, repping sentence cards and such and I already understand more real French than my ultra smart friends who studied French for more than 4 years... So... Cheers ! I owe this to you :-)

I have been learning japanese seriously for about a month now. I have gone through everything on the MIA site and I am going to start with the recognition cards. I don't really know where I am in terms of skill level but I can understand simple anime like シロクマカフェ without any english subs and n5/n4 podcast on spotify to some degree around 70% I guess. My listening skill is way far ahead of my reading skill (maybe I should say kanji skill, because if things are written in hiragana I can understand them pretty well), this is probably because I have been watching anime and listening to japanese music for years although I never really was focused on learning the language at all, and also that I already have experience picking up a language through immersion though I never really thought it was a thing, I just had no real choice since I was just thrown into a foreign country and never had anyone actually teach me the language. I am not really sure where I should be in terms of the MIA level of studying, should I just go straight to sentence mining after kanji recognition?

This is my channel devoted solely to languages and linguistics, but I have other channels on this same account. Indeed, one of them is specifically my immersion channel for German. It does seem to target advertisements differently on different channels, despite being part of the same account - enough so to fix video suggestions, but not enough so to get ads in any of my languages, when intended. I've been considering a VPN to fix that.

As far as sharing Premiim across accounts, maybe it’s possible with like business accounts where one google account controls multiple youtube accounts, but idk i couldn’t be bothered to figure it out. So I have to deal with ads on my JP account. BUT, that’s actually okay (for a beginner like me), because if I have a Japanese/Japan account, AND set my VPN to Japan, then all the ads that I have to see are completely in Japanese and intended for Japanese natives, so it’s actually an additional source of input, so my immersion is only broken up by more immersion 😂

All the videos that KZbin recommend me are in English (OK some of them are in French) and I didn't even consciously try to make this account into immersion account. I got stuck on English part of KZbin 5 or 6 years ago and I have never left (I am a native Serbo-Croatian speaker)

There is a trick to play KZbin on the background for smartphone users (for android, did not test this on iOS), just open KZbin on chrome, exit the app, and then just press play on the notification panel/lock screen ;)

I created a new channel just for Japanese immersion after watching this vid. Then I got distracted and started watching English-language content! 😖

Should I start my immersion from the absolute beginning of my learning or should I get to intermediate first? Also how to get to intermediate?

Hi! Can you recommend interesting videos in Chinese (Anime, Chinese Dramas or films) on KZbin. It would be great if you made a video on this topic: videos that you watch on KZbin to learn and enjoy the Chinese language. Congrats for your channel. Regards!

Hi Matt, thank you for the video. I had a question and I wanted to get your opinion. I know you quite like passive listening, but I've realized something that I don't know you'll agree with. Sometimes if it's content in Japanese of which I'm not understanding a big portion - apart from making the task boring - it also makes me feel like my brain is getting lazier. It feel like my brain thinks "well, I'm not going to understand too much of it, then I might as well turn off" and then it stays off when I'm practising active listening with content I should be able to follow easily. I don't know if what I'm saying makes sense, but I feel like listening material, for me, needs to be very engaging and at an appropriate level.
