I got a mc callum polypenco ghb. Its good for the start and is cheaper than a blackwood. Maybe one day in a few years i will get myself one of the nice blackwood ones. I am also flirting with the Hardy smallpipe you reviewed. It wiuld be good for some indoor at home playing. I really cant play the big one in my Apartment.

Just found another Student that wants to sell an almost New Hardy smallpiepe for 25% less. So excited now to get it.

Thanks for the info. My piping instructor tells me come August I’m ready for my first set of pipes. Will be getting the Henderson/RG Hardie Limited Edition Highland Pipes, having it set up vintage style so I can be a WW1 Scottish piper for a local reenactment group.

There are plans, but it’ll likely be a 3-5 video series as there is a LOT to cover…

What strength chanter reed do you use on your pipes. I feel like I'm struggling with a medium and I have a hard time with it. I see you and others playing and you seem so at ease.
@MattWillisBagpiper2 жыл бұрын
Easy or easy medium. I'm getting too old for a medium or harder reed these days.

I’ve been that guy that has a chanter that has been in the closet for a bit. I’m playing it again and I had a quick question. When do your students usually transition to the pipes?
@MattWillisBagpiper Жыл бұрын
After 10-12 tunes memorized on their practice pipes. I have them transition to the practice pipes at 5-6 tunes.
@procall28remedy2 жыл бұрын
What strength chanter reed is everyone using. I just transitioned to full pipes a few weeks ago. Easy reed is too easy and will cut out if I blow too hard, medium is currently too strong for me to get a decent Hi G and Hi A. Just keep whacking at it ? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Matt. I recently bought a new set of McCallum P1 Poly pipes. In the late seventies I had a set of Lawrie Black Wood and I believe the Black Wood pipes had a different tone, warmer than the Poly? Is that possible?

Do you have any general recommendations on bag size? I heard people suggest med and small to me... But im just not sure, i guess maybe buy one and try it out?

Hello Matt I'd like to ask you a question so I've been playing the practice chanter with my left hand at the bottom and recently I've been practicing with the bagpipes but I feel more comfortable controling the bag with my left side is that possible or not?
@MattWillisBagpiper2 жыл бұрын
I've seen pipers play with the left hand on bottom and bag on the left, but to be honest, I'm not sure how they strike in or get the bag in position. It can be done, but I have no advice on how to do it. :(

ok question time, i am a complete noob... never even touched pipes, but they have always been an instrument i wanted to learn. should i buy pipes first ? or a practice chanter? or both at the same time? im exceedingly small 5' tall, should i start with small pipes or just go to highlands? and now a question that doesnt have to do with me, how the hell did they tune their pipes before tape?
@MattWillisBagpiper2 жыл бұрын
Definitely a practice chanter. No need for a set of highland pipes for some time (9-12 months typically). Being small, the finger stretch will be a bit further than someone taller, but shouldn't be a problem, highland or smallpipes. They'd use either beeswax on the top side of the hole or hemp wrapped around the chanter.
