After a few months and many outings, the sporran is still tangle free and not too floofy!

I found that using skin lotion with mine,it's the same consistency of conditioner, it takes a considerable amount, and also, I recommend using a vent brush to brush to work it through the hair, but still, it's frustrating as hell to get your sporran all nice and brushed out, and when you step outside to play your event, and a big wind comes up and blows it all over the place, to where it looks like a long haired teenager that just walked out of a Metallica concert!!!

finally, something I know about. As a horse person, we like to be gentle with their tails because one tail hair can take up to 7 years to grow to full length. Cowboy Magic is a great product but it's not magic at all, it's dimethicone. Horse tails look much better since it's been available. It's a silicone polymer and that's why it detangles so well without leaving it greasy. The waves and fluff you're getting are just from humidity over time, your wife might have a flat iron that would straighten it nicely and not damage it as long as you don't pull the hair or go too slowly. You can also brush it with a hair dryer blowing on it while the hair is under slight tension and it will become straighter. It won't stay like that forever, but it will work.

Store the Sporran with a nylon hose covering it. Just cut a piece from a leg in the nylon hose and pull it over your Sporran. Keeps the hair compressed and straight, keeping it from getting so fluffy.

It gives the sporran a real funny hang. Too tubular.

I've always used Show Sheen. It's easier to use because you spray it on. Works great to tame and untangle horsehair.

Go to the grocery market and but a jar of organic coconut oil. It is a perfect conditioner and can work on your own hair and skin as well!

I have the spray Cowboy Magic for my horse, and I thought about using it on my horsehair sporran. I didn’t. For the time being, I wrapped my sporran and tassels, separately, with a wide ribbon to keep it tamed and less flyaway (while storing it). I’d love to know how your sporran turned out after some time has passed. Any hair product can build up and may need to be washed with too much in it.

There is a spray that I use as well as cowboy magic. Look at Show Sheen for horses. I use it on my dogs and it is easier to apply then the cowboy magic

Not if you don't like using petrochemicals. This is mainly silicones which I believe can go sticky with age catching dirt in the process.

Great Video, very informative on the care of these hair sporrans. I have a question though. I have a genuine Black Watch hair sporran dated from 1880-1910s which has the old leather mantle before they switched to brass mantles. My question entails would this product be safe to use on a horse hair sporran that is at least over 100 years old? The sporran is in great shape and the hair would just a little combing to bring it back as it has some wave because of its age. Any insight on this matter would be appreciated as do not want to destroy this precious and rare piece of history. Love your videos by the way.

I would always be caution with any product on a vintage item like this old sporran you speak of...

When combing long hair start at the bottom instead of the top.

Hello Matt First of all - THANK YOU SO MUCH for your many magnificent videos about playing the bagpipes! I enjoy them very much 👏 I am now trying to learn to play the bagpipes myself - and I'm very afraid of harming my hearing. So, what kind of earplugs do you use? And do you know how many dB the ones you use reduse the number of dB by? And is there any number that is suggested as a minimum noise reduction? I have been told, that the bagpipe makes as much noise as when a jet takes of = about 130 dB 😱 I've searched the internet and can't really find anything recommended...... Thank you in advance, Best regards, Christina, Denmark

I don't use anything fancy, just standard ones from Lowes or Home Depot. Glad you found the channel!

hello Matt, very nice yours video !! Il love!! Its really help me. ;-) Please I have a question : can you explain how you put the great plaid ( Laird plaid ou shepherd plaid ) arround the body and how you attach it to the shoulder with a big round pin ? 🙂
I should probably do this to my sporran haha. It's a little out of control.

Matt, does it stay wet or get completely absorbed? Does it transfer any residue to the kilt?

I haven't had to stand out in the rain with my horsehair sporran... I imagine it just gets super wet.

What would happen if you tried hairspray for control? I dont mean aqua net or anything like that. Just a few sprays of something style it and blow dry?
