Matty Healy of The 1975 is asking pop’s existential questions: The FADER Interview

The FADER

Күн бұрын

This Friday, The 1975's fourth album Notes On A Conditional Form finally arrives in its entirety, following a rollout that began last summer. "There's a lot of talk about why the album got pushed back, and all these kind of things," Healy told us. "It's kind of irrelevant. The premise of my idea was always really to just continuously have a real time expression."
Conditional is the operative word here. The album sways with a continuous ebb and flow, pushing the band to the most extreme ends of a spectrum they've been operating on for the better part of the last decade: it's simultaneously their most aggressive and dreamy work to date, tied together with iCloud ambience. To Healy, seemingly oppositional forces are the ones most worth pursuing: "I'm always trying to figure out who I am, a search for the definitive self. Why am I this walking set of contradictions when I believe that I'm actually this? Why am I not essentially me?"
Speaking from lockdown in his home studio outside of London, Healy opened up on what making Notes On A Conditional Form revealed about himself, how he currently feels about America, and what needs to be saved during this time of reckoning, within the music industry and beyond.

I think true artists (I'd say Matty is one) are defined by their lack of clear identity- what makes them them is precisely the fact they inhabit different roles and blur boundaries.

i think it's kinda interesting how he considers love as a form of escapism (relinquishing responsibility and being outside ur reality). sex, drugs, and religion are pretty self-explanatory but wish he would elaborate more on love! i like hearing him talk :-]

Max Flores yeah i think it’s the same concept as something like happiness which he’s talked about being overrated and constantly trying to pursue it/ thinking if you don’t have it that you’re doing something wrong. so like chasing that feeling of love or being loved is the escapism

This may seem out of touch, but I want the lights and the effects in shows sometimes. Those are creative things. The 75 were getting so good at the visual experience of going to a concert and if they pair that down and take it back a notch I, for one, will be a little bit disappointed. Granted, they were at Zoo TV level visuals and occasional theatrics, but that shit is fun as fuck! Hopefully, they'll be able to find a way through the sun and the wind to still bring a bold live show.

Tell the truth is a great advisory banner! The more true a person is, the more authentic and happy a person is. Being someone else is exhausting and impossible to live up too. I absolutely love the fact that The 1975 are just who they are. People evolve it's a beautiful thing to embrace that.

I think it's so important to be introspective and to reflect on things, as we go through life we observe things. Matty does this a lot and it helps to learn about himself and the dynamic, ever-changing world. I felt it when he said he can't really comment on what he's learned about himself as a person , without properly thinking about it as there's so much to comprehend and he's still learning. I also love how he can get lost in his thoughts, and as a someone who is more comfortable with their introverted self than extroverted, I get that. To me, no album review is truly valid if it just looks at the instrumentation and not the lyrics and concepts behind them. Following the band on the journey of noacf, you can get a proper grasp. To me this is their best album, and I don't budge easily, iliwys used to be my favourite.
