The underwater footage is so beautiful. When I saw the title I thought it would be another situation like The Philippines where the turtles are getting extinct due to a lot of human activity (so I have read). Really glad that's not the case and that there are still many turtles there. They look awesome.

Yeah, it's really interesting there's not more of an impact on the turtles. We were just down in Mexico and they're having huge issues with too many tourists coming in and disturbing the turtles. I think maybe because Hawaii doesn't do any bus tours to the turtles and only does boat tours, they're able to control the amount of people swimming with them. There's also multiple areas to see turtles, so I think that helps spread the tourists out as well!

I have taken kayak trips to different places and swam at the volcano. My advice is to find the best value for your time you are willing to spend out on the water

You answered your own bewilderment. "Where you want to go is where the katamaran is, and it's super choppy out there". Seems to make sense to book the tour if you want to see the island spot as well. You also wouldn't have to swim out as far if you're not comfortable with the distance. Something could happen out there...so I would probably prefer to have a rescue boat nearby in the event it does. Anyway, thanks for the tip on the location.

Hahhaa! In the moment, I for sure wanted to go out there. After we hung out with the turtles though, we realized that there's way more turtles near the shore than out in the middle. Stick to the shore and you'll see far more turtle friends👍

Loved your video but just FYI none of the tours ONLY go to Turtle Town. It's a 2nd stop with the first being Molokini which is the major draw. But now that I saw this I will choose a Molokini tour that just stays at Molokini and do Turtle Town from shore on a separate day. Thanks!

Hi David. Did you use any dive/waterproof case for your GoPro when you snorkel'd or straight up GoPro?

This is all straight up GoPro 7 Black, no dive case. You only need the dive case below 33ft and I'm never really going that deep while just snorkeling and freediving. Hope that helps!

WAY TOO CLOSE TO THE TURTLES, 1:48 example, I do like David's channel, and think he probably is ignorant about this, which says a lot about the government's inability to communicate to tourists, but he was way too close. the law is at LEAST 10 feet away, never touch them, people constantly get too close, touch them, leave trash in the water, etc.. Last week I found a turtle at the location in the video, who literally had dental floss wrapped all around it' neck and front arms, it took about 20 minutes to get it all off safely and properly, so hopefully it has more time to live. these are delicate creatures, please respect the islands like it was your own home.

We didn’t do a boat tour, but we actually did a kayaking and snokeling combo. So we kayaked pretty far to a turtle spot and from there we snokeled then kayaked back. It was pretty fun.

I don't use a red lens, but I'm shooting Native WB with a Flat Profile and doing some color work in post. The 7 seems to do amazing even underwater! That thing is crazy good WOO HOO!!!! ;)

David, we just got back from Maui on Thursday. 2 feels I HIGHLY recommend for turtles is Honolulu Bay, above Kapalua, and Olowalu. Olowalu is a “cleaner station” for turtles in that they come there for the reef fish to eat the algae off of their shells. Both are very easy to get to and have an abundance of reef fish. We saw a spotted eel at Airport Beach and an octopus at Coral Gardens too. All in all Maui is fantastic for snorkeling!

Everyone should know it is awesome to see turtles while snorkeling but it's uncool to touch them, chase them, swim close to them or swim up to them while they are trying to rest. They aren't on vacation, they are trying to survive and need to be left alone. Please come to Hawaii and enjoy the beautiful ocean but be respectful of the creature that call it home. Aloha.

The thing the turtle tours does that's good is boat in, which means they avoid sending tourists from walking on, touching (human disease and bacteria transfer) and destroying the coral reefs. If you enter from the land, please be careful not to harm the reefs.

Absolutely Jason! Cool thing about this spot is that to enter, you’re either jumping into decently deep water off the rocks, or wading in from the small beach. Great spot for turtles and keeps the coral safe👍

We went here and we did not see turtles on this one day we went, I think we were too late in the day, two guys said they has seen 2 earlier. The next day we went slightly higher up and first thing in the am. As walked down the beach ALL of the paid snorkel tour boats were there and yup just like David says, we got the free version of Turtle Town at the SAME beach all the paid guys went too. Saved us $240. Thanks David. We have since been to other beaches and seen them too, the trick is snorkel along where the rocks are and you will see them.

I would say 100% bring your own gear! We just packed it in with our luggage and it didn’t take up too much. It’s just nice as you drive around the island to different spots to know you have it in the car and can just grab it and go. Also nice to know like 200 other random people haven’t sucked on the same snorkel as you 🤣 And you’re going to LOVE Turtle Town!!! You’re going to crack up when you’re there and the tour boats start pulling up!

Actually, there is no such place as Turtle Town. The tour companies use that as a name for anywhere they go to see turtles, which as I have discovered is pretty much any where in the ocean. Oh and you blew the pronunciation of La Perouse. He was a French Naval officer and explorer. You sound like you're trying to pronounce something Spanish. www.dictionary.com/browse/la-perouse

Google Maps disagrees. If you look on the map just off the beach from Makena Landing Park, Google Maps actually has Turtle Town as a pin. Google might be mistaken, but it's the spot that all the snorkel tours we talked with were taking their guests. Oh, and man I figured I was blowing La Perouse! I'm from San Diego, so I've only ever taken Spanish. Pretty much anything I say ends up sounding Spanish! Hahaaa Even when we were in Thailand and Bali, every time I tried it just came out Spanish sounding!
