In this video, I cover how Hawaii's Governor Green gave the "Nuclear Hammer" against Short Term Rentals (STRs) to Maui's Mayor Bissen, who is ramming it through with the help of a potential violation of Hawaii's Sunshine Law by Keani Rawlins-Fernandez of the Maui County Council, along with the support of Lahaina Strong, having been misled by state and county officials. The bill SB 2919 sets a dangerous precedent for the removal of private property rights that will likely be invoked elsewhere within the state.
I also cover an update about the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) rail system, which is now further in jeopardy as recruitment and staffing issues threaten the contract of the HART CEO, Lori Kahikina.

The short term rental ban is just another step to get people to leave Maui. I was watching the rail go by several times yesterday in Waipahu. Maximum two passengers each time, one 🚃 went by empty! There is no way that 3000 people per day ride the rail. People on Oahu were bamboozled into accepting the project and it is just a money laundering scheme fleezing the tax payer.

Bingo. The ability to aggregate capital and out price the actial people creates a classic David and Goliath scenario. Huge corporations need to be something of the past. Period. Begin rebuilding civilization by having block parties, meeting your neightbors, housed and unhoused, survey and catalog your actual local resources, pay attention to supporting the families who can hear your voice and see your face, without technology. They are your actual neighbors. Humans can divest from the economy, the homogenous hegemonically managed agribusiness in which human hoards are the crop that is harvested for profits and, primarily, imho, suffering. Big difference between an apartment and a condominium. Condominiums are individually owned. So this “apartment” zoning is a misnomer. So I think a review of the zoning ordinance will clarify what is allowed. Apartment units are usually leased on a yearly term, but can be month to month, that is up to the owner and manager. Condominiums are individually owned and the common area owned by the HOA. The HOA CCR’s and bylaws specify rules including rental policy, most don’t allow STR or have a percentage allowed. So what is done in Hawaii is clear as mud, and the attitude of the Governor and the Mayor is very disrespectful to people who have invested in Maui. We own one of these 7,000 condominiums. We average 70,000 in gross rental. 17% up front to local tax, 22% up front to property management, fixed costs 1% assessed value ($1,100,000) for property tax, $1080 HOA , $980 insurance. So we net maybe $20,000. But all of it comes out of the pocket of visitors. Right there is $350,000,000 from the STR’s in the local economy. That’s just lodging and that’s just STR’s, not hotels. So please explain to me why the Governor and the Mayor aren’t writing us a thank you note? Oh and Mr Governor and Mr MIA Mayor, where was he when Lahaina was burning anyway, what action are you taking with fire mitigation? And how does the money that I help put into your economy get spent?

Hawaii’s political “leaders” do need to answer some very critical questions; which aren’t being asked by our local media here in Hawaii. HOA needs to be abolished. The homeowners should be made to maintain the property to keep trashed vehicles from being seen, and yards should be properly maintained. HOA pays to have people tell you what you can't do.

The loss of 7,000 TVRs on West Maui (look at the list and add them up) will cause the economy to collapse. Jobs will disappear, further diminishing the ability of the local residents to afford a beach-side condo. Additionally, these "residences" were constructed for short-term rentals, i.e., no storage, one parking spot, no privacy, etc. etc. This is such a bad idea that it is hard to comprehend. Think for a moment about the financial consequences for the current owners when the units sit empty. Think about the inevitable lawsuits against the County and the associated cost. This kind of govt action is common in the third-world, which (very sadly) Maui is more and more headed toward.

Great comment. I'm not sure that collapsing the local economy more or less isn't the plan here. The globalists don't like mass tourism. They say it's "for the planet," but it's really because they don't like the crowds, the traffic, and the unsightliness. Less money for govt? They don't care. They want just enough housing for a "flexible" and probably imported working class. I did see in a video from Peter Santanello last week that there are only about 600 owner occupied housing units in Lahaina. Everybody else (according to FEMA) rents. That's about 87% of the fire victims. Renters are seen as having no claim on the place. Only the owner occupied folks. Keep an eye on them.

Yea I don't believe that part about all of them being constructed with the intention of being short term rentals AT ALL after watching three places I used to live in be shoved into that market and watching the overall availability of especially ohana units plummet to practically nothing over the past decade. Instead,it should have been done 50 years ago when there was much less congestion, just like they did building H-1 almost to Nanakuli years ago over marginal land. But the Oahu traffic is abominable, so do what is needed to make the rail system work, like making a seamless connection to the buses to complete the route for passengers, if that is not in place. Just get a transfer at no extra cost. I'm no longer there so don't know i that is in place.

Hey Traci I helped a veteran friend of mine with his condo about 5 years ago and we made it a Airbnb until he sold it , a huge multi conglomerate organization bought it and I believe these corporations bought a lot of properties for business ventures so the county is going to have a bunch of law suits I believe

Maui needs a short term mayor. The rail has been a loser project that should've never started. It's a money pit that won't help traffic. At this point its best to close the pit. Stop throwing money at a bad plan instead of fixing problems that would help traffic.

Completely agree. I remember when Mufi Hanneman told the local news that the “Hawaii people can vote no to the rail, but we going do em anyway” (paraphrasing). We were forced this rail pit. On top of that, with every shortfall including the lack of riders our government is still pushing the idea to go further. Crazy leadership.

Seems to me that the recent VERY high cost of HOA & COA maintenance fees have gone crazy only in the past few years - before that (for as long as I can remember) maintenance fees were always affordable That makes me suspicious that something ELSE is going on which is raising the fees to an UNAFFORDABLE rate. I've considered all the usual excuses but I've come to the conclusion that in actuality it's part of the "You will own NOTHING" agenda.

Insurance for our building was $100k per year - this year it has risen to $1.3 million, which equates to $450 more per month. Most complexes do not have individual metering for utilities - so as those prices continue to rise, so does the monthly fee. Major repairs to buildings far exceed what was reserved for - so reserve fees continue to rise.

Something smells of corruption. It would be good for the people if they could join in together and help each other build homes like the Amish do. Because of the negligence of the officials, the government should provide the materials needed for these folks to rebuild their homes. That would be the moral thing to do, but integrity goes out the window when people use their official offices to make themselves wealthy. 😢😢

Maui officials have already denied just about everyone who has offered to help. There is a company that has prefab folded out and set it up houses ready to go. All they needed was the government to approve some land and they would bring the houses and set them up. The Maui government refused because they do not want the people to move back onto their own land in Lahaina they want them to move to the outer Islands so they can turn Lahaina into a great big huge resort. They already announced that they have all the plans even Oprah announced that she has her own plans. It's just like the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy by the US and the killing off of all of the local Hawaiians who did not want to give up their land or their country. So they use lasers and burn them out and then refused to allow even the insurance companies to come in to assess so that they could pay out the insurance, but Maui officials even blocked that they do not want the insurance companies paying out. This goes way bigger and goes way deeper then a short-term rental. And this has been going on for a couple hundred years to the people of Hawaii.

@@bobdol69I don’t know where to begin. First off, mainland companies are already building all over the islands. That work has been given to outside companies for over a century now. Secondly, single family homes are being built in under a year repeatedly all over Oahu. I can’t speak on other islands as I’m from Oahu and seen it first hand…repeatedly. I’d imagine that’s the same in neighboring islands as well but like I said I’m from Oahu. Thirdly, concrete trucks run daily. Maybe not in outer islands (speaking from Oahu pov) but on Oahu there everywhere. There’s more concrete than grass in a lot of areas. I don’t know what your smoking, but I remember this island when it was more island than city. And as for excavators or “heavy equipment guys”, there’s plenty guys that can do the job and are currently not working (on the bench). Hawaii construction has always been slamming followed by not enough work and back to busy again. That’s construction. Are you born and raised Hawaii or a trans-plant? Rhetorical ?

SAD those short term rentals will be lost. These small businesses will lose a part of their income. Plus the hotels in Maui will rise there rates due to lack of competition. When you research who are the owners of these short term rentals…many are your average working people, trying to make extra income…

@@3dandyrandy3 I like Airbnb because I have much more space and a kitchen to cook with a large fridge. I won't stay in a hotel. Hotels are too pricy, too small, and less private. I will go to Puerto Vallarta instead. I know that many others in California will do the same. Sorry Hawaii, but this is a large mistake. This will only benefit the large corporate hotel chains. This will definitely bring tourism down.

If this passes...it will only open doors for wealthier nomadic workers to come and stay as they will be able to afford the expensive condos that will likely sit empty as most local renters cannot afford them. I own (2) vacation rental condos on Maui and my costs alone are nearly $12,000 a month for the two of them. So whose going to pay me $6'000 a month just so I can break even after self managing them? I am local and worked 2 full time jobs for over 20 years and saved to get these as investments for my childrens future. We need to vote out these incompetent morons in office and council who do not represent the majority of us that live here. Im all for housing locals, but not at the expense of violating ones constitutional property rights...is it ironic what they are trying to do here? Not only will this be illegal, it is immoral and will devastate our economy and many local businesses that depend on tourism as our main source of income. This overreach will cost the county and tax payers hundreds of millions in litigation and they will lose...and in the end...the only people that suffer are the locals that work 2 to 3 jobs and now pay higher taxes to offset county officials ignorance in passing bills to appease the minority, screaming mouths wanting to take others property rights and use...ironic yes? And who will suffer in the end? The locals that are being deceived by this bill that is all just for show action to appease them and get them off the beaches "fishing for homes". Well i got news...you cannot steal another mans catch...you need to work hard, do more than what your paid to do, and stop complaining about the success of others and your poverty...instead of buying new lifted $100,000 Toyota trucks...maybe invest in education and work smarter like i did. Accepting this bill is a pure display of economic ignorance. Oh and by the way....i rented my 2 condos to FEMA....they sat empty for (4) months because the applicants all said it didnt meet their needs...only one parking space, no storage, and the unit was too small, 9 families declined to move in. Until it was filled 4 months later by single people. So that alone should tell you these units are insufficient for locals housing needs. Maui government....look in the mirror at your inaction in creating affordable housing when you had the chance, take responsibility and make right to the local people and not take the easy route and steal from others.

thanks for mentioning HOA fees we are owners of a kaanapalli timeshare and the fees for 1 week went from 4600 to 7800 in 5 years, half is property tax, so for 52 weeks the county collects appx 175k for what amounts to be an apartment.. that money is staying in Maui. if the plan is to drive everyone out be prepared for the standard of living to take a huge nosedive, or for resident home taxes to explode. instead of these measures maybe the government officials should have focused in getting the cleanup done in a faster manner *don't give me BS about dangerous goods) and the rebuild could happen 2 years faster that whats going to happen. BTW people living in the Hyatt rent and food free likely are not complaining

My sister moved back to our home in Hawaii and told me that there was now a rail system and it's poorly planned and it's ridiculous! You still have to get off the train and if there's not a bus stop for Da Bus you have to get an Uber, so you pay for the train you pay for the bus and you pay for an Uber before you even get to where you want to go. Ridiculous! It reminds her of the California High-Speed Rail System that is cost Californians enormous millions and millions of dollars and it still doesn't work!

If a building was permitted to be an apartment, it should not be a SRT. If it is permitted as a condo and the HOA permits it. It should be allowed to be an SRT. The problem with the nuclear hammer is it destroys everything.

All it does is put more burden on the property owners. Placing the issue of affordable housing on the backs of property owners is not a remedy to the problem. If anything, it exacerbates it. If this is what they intend to do, no one will want to own property that can't turn a profit over their mortgage and maintenance expenses.
